Queen Midknight: The Wolf’s Bride - Chapter 178
Chapter hundred and seventy eight: a Kiss from Max
Max tried to keep his eyes open, but the weight of his droopy eyelid and the damp eyelash weighed down on him so that he had to close it at intervals.
It’s been a very long few days and he was at its limit.
(Help me)
He whispered softly to his human but he got no reply. Alexander had since given up on living and every minute that went by Max could feel Alexander’s consciousness slipping by and like slime, the more he tried to hold on to his human, the more slippery it became.
(Come on, Alexander! Help me. Keep your eyes open!)
He purrs at him, trying to get him to do something. But just like yesterday and the day before that and the day before that, he got just a murmur and some gibberish he could make out and his human was off again into the Cuckoo’s world.
Alexander was just a day away from going mad and when he eventually does, Max would turn into a blood thirsty beast and not the cage in was would hold him back from his murder spree.
(Alexander, let’s think of our mate….our queen, do you remember her?)
Max used the last weapon in his weaponry to get the king to hold on.
Alexander’s consciousness stirred and he took momentarily control, relieving Max of his watch after three days.
“Janessa…. Jamie” he whispered and opened his eyes. He could see her but she was so far away from him and no matter how much he stretched his hand to touch her face, he could never reach her.
“Jamie…”
Alexander eventually gave up and started slipping away again when Max purred as hard as he could as his consciousness. The pain made Alexander jump and the tiredness was temporarily gone.
(Stay awake. If you drift off, you are gone forever, Alexander. You will never Rose or Judd or Jamie. You will be gone, dead. Erase! Do you not hear me and I won’t be able to keep from shredding them into pieces when I see them. So. Stop. Trying. To. Die. On. Me. Fool.)
Alexander was breathing hard but he was alert and aware of his environment now.
(I am awake. Stop yelling, Maximus)
Alexander begged his wolf.
He looked around and observed his environment for the millionth time since he was brought there.
It was a dungeon no doubt, the firth and the stench told him as much. The only source of light in the big prison was from a little window on the western corner and even that was barricaded with iron bars, he could snap it with Max’s help but that only brought him to his most immediate problem.
He was bleeding slowly from the twenty or so tiny openings all over his body from the arrows and the silver chain on his hands and feet weren’t just stopping his healing process, it was biting deeper into his arms and legs leaving behind an excruciating pain.
It was why consciousness was difficult for Alexander.
“We need to get out of here, Max. I can’t die here.
(Finally…yes, what do you need me to do?)
“Hmmm….the silver chain…I need to get rid of it. You should hide Max. If you are far away from me, maybe the silver won’t affect me so much” Alexander explained to him.
Max agreed and he retreated deeper in his mind that his presence was minimum.
“Ahhh! Ahhh!” Alexander felt the pain intensify and he was on the verge of passing out when Max resurfaced.
(Are you alright?)
“I guess, you were bearing the greater part of the pain for me, old friend. I am sorry” Alexander murmured. He was still shaking from the aftermath of the ordeal he went through.
“Sorry, Max” he murmured again.
(Don’t sweat it. We will be okay, Alexander. We have each other)
Max encouraged him.
Alexander held on for as long as he could for Max to rest, all the while he thought of his family, especially the woman he loves.
He held on to her memories for as long as he could to distract him from the pain.
(What do you think she is doing right now, Max) Alexander asked his wolf.
(Knowing Janessa, probably something we won’t approve of)
Alexander chuckled through the pain and he slipped away again.
When he came to, he was hearing voices again.
(Are they here to torture us again, Max?) Alexander asked his wolf.
For days now, Ernesto had sent his goons to bash their skull in every opportunity they got. It explained the black eyes and the broken nose and the bruised jaw.
And because of the silver chain, Alexander couldn’t do anything about it but take the pain they offered.
Alexander was almost slipping away again when he heard the voice again in his head.
(Alexander!)
He opened his eyes wider and stared at the empty space. He was alone.
(Alexander! Hold on, we are coming to you!)
(Semeen?) Max called out. He was more sane than Alexander at that moment and he made the voice recognition.
Alexander really tried but it just got too difficult to keep his eyes open.

Jamie found the dungeon thanks to the map of the midlanders castle, Eileen gave to Judd.
She and her friends were almost close when she heard him in her head.
She almost leaped in Joy. Trying to remember the spell for a deeper sleep, she kept hearing his voice, telling her to hurry and when she finally cast the spell, his voice was almost a whisper.
(Hurry, my love…I can’t hold on to him much longer!)
“Max?”
(Yes, Luna. You shouldn’t have come but now, you have to hurry. He is dying, Jamie)
“You can hear me, Max” Jamie moved even faster.
(Yes but you are speaking out loud and I have super hearing. Hurry! I can’t hold on much longer!)
“Hold on, I am coming!”
Jamie, Blake, Judd, Ursla and Semeen left the other werewolves warriors to stand watch while they slipped through the hidden tunnels into the dungeon.
Soon, she was standing in front of the cage that held her husband and the only thing keeping her from him was the iron bars.
“Alexander!” Jamie called out to him.
“Monisha” Max whispered back to her.
“Someone please, do something about the…”
Jamie hardly got the words out when Semeen and Blake grabbed both sides of the iron bars and broke it free from the wall.
Jamie flew inside and soon she was on her knees in front of him, cupping and kissing his bloodied face. Tears streamed down her face as she kept holding him.
“See what they did to you, Alexander”
(Sorry, it’s Max. The king is currently unavailable…) Max corrected her.
Jamie blinked. She could feel the onset of a very fatal hyperventilation, the type was mind numbing and painful.
She couldn’t ask the question that was stuck in her throat as her mind jumped from one thing to another.
What did he mean by Alexander was unavailable?
Cold sweats broke out almost threatening to soak up her clothes and the clammy hands, the pounding heart, eyes widening in terror as flicking from side to side did nothing to stop the hyperventilation that was about to set in.
Max reacted immediately. He kissed her. He had never been able to since Alexander was always in charge of his human form.
He kissed her at first to take away the panic but with time he kissed her like it was the only singular thought in his mind since he found out that they were mates.
Jamie kissed him back. They were two completely different sides of each other. Even the kiss they shared was completely different from Alexander’s.
Jamie enjoyed every bit of it. And when he could kiss her anymore because of the increased pain, he pulled away.
(I have been thinking about that for a very long time)
“Hello…” Jamie murmured shyly.
(He is not dead. You have to get the silver away from us)
“Judd, do something about the silver!” Jamie yelled at her brother in law who was momentarily frozen when he saw the injuries Alexander sustained.
“Luther, please!”
Judd came closer with his sword and he broke the chain after several hits. He helped his brother up.
“Can you walk, your highness?”
Max shook his head.
Judd picked him up easily.
“We should get out of here” Ursla urged everyone.
Jamie stood up and paused for a moment.
“Not so far, I have one more thing to acquire. Ursla, go with Judd and the king. The rest of you are coming with me”
Ursla obeyed and left with Judd while Semeen and Blake watched the Queen with causal curiosity.
Blake decided to speak up.
“Where are we going, Luna?”
“Where else, Commander Blake? The Midlanders have to be taught some manners. Did you see the Alpha’s face? Do you have any objections to some old fashioned revenge?” Jamie asked both of them.
“Hell no! An eye for an eye”
