Queen Midknight: The Wolf’s Bride - Chapter 185
Chapter hundred and eighty five:The woman in Red.
Janessa!
Alexander racing towards the house made Judd uneasy but he couldn’t leave their little sister knowing fully well about her ordeal with the king years before. He was after all the Shadow Knight’s son and he wasn’t blind to the punishment the king gave his legitimate heirs.
But it didn’t stop him from turning around to watch his elder brother run like he was somehow being pursued by the sun and his life depended on it.
Alexander’s heart pounded like a drunk that was out of tone.
Tiperty-tap tiperty-tap.
He felt like any moment from there, his ribcage would be ripped open and his out of breath, and pounding heart would eap to the floor.
God no!
Janessa!
He yelled her name again. He was so close to the door but something made him stop. Alexander must have reached for the door handle severally before he allowed himself to touch it.
Tiperty-tap tiperty-tap!
His out of control heart was still trying to get blood to all parts of his body to prevent him from passing out.
He walked inside and he didn’t hesitate again. Knowing was better than not knowing.
Janessa
He murmured as he opened the inner room and he found her body there. Just motionless on the bed. She was lying on her stomach and one of her hands was dangling off the bed and the other supported her head. Her legs seemed to be pulled together like they had been intentionally seeking each other out for comfort.
Alexander felt his breath caught in his throat. He blinked and then he fixed his eyes on her frame on the bed.
How could someone as vibrate as the women he loved be reduced to a dangling hand and pushed together legs.
He took a step forward. And he blinked again.
“Janessa…”
He murmured again. He couldn’t see her face. Her hair was in the way. Alexander took another step and another step until he was standing in front of her dangling hand and he could make out her chin.
His pounding heart slowed considerably. Actually, everything else did, including time. Everything known to man slowed down except for the name he kept whispering.
He heaved a breath and touched his chin. “Janessa…”
He could feel the tears that were beginning to pool in his eyes and the way his shoulders were insisting on slouching as if he was an old farmer with a bad back.
Alexander remembers thinking about just her name. It was the only thing he could remember.
Slowly he lowered himself on the bed so close to her dangling hand.
First he placed his right hand forward attempting to take away the hair on her beautiful face. But thrice he tried to and twice he ended up pulling it back.
The third time he simply pushed it to the side of her face and he felt the first drop of tears on his cheek as he swallowed and blinked at the same time.
Then he took her dangling hand and brought it close to his mouth and kissed as his face turned into a tearful mess.
His tears wet her hand.
“Oh beautiful…what have you done? No! No! No!”
He kissed her open palm.
“Come back to me, please… Please, I can’t lose you. Please, Jamie”
When Alexander saw that she wouldn’t budge he gently lifted her and placed on his lap. He then buried his face on her hair.
Alexander felt tension in his chest beginning to rise and for a moment, he couldn’t catch a breath. He struggled to take in air as his nostrils burned just as much as his heavy lungs and he knew that releasing the tension would help a great deal.
Turning his face upwards, he yelled as loud as he could.
“Ahhh!”
Then he felt it.
“Stop yelling! Good lord, there got to be a better way to welcome someone to the afterlife!” Jamie with her eyes still closed and her hands covering her ears.
Alexander was startled and he turned to face her. He had turned towards her in time to watch her brink and open her eyes.
“Alexander? What are you doing in my afterlife?” Jamie was confused.
She knew she was dead but she didn’t expect to see the man she chose to die for in the land of the dead too.
It didn’t make any sense, whatsoever to her.
Alexander was happy and then he wasn’t. Then he was relieved and he wasn’t. Then he was greatly overjoyed briefly, which was followed by a bout of anger.
Pick one emotion and stick to it! Alexander told himself and so, he chose anger.
“You are not dead, you selfish self-absorbed foolish little girl!” He yelled at her.
“I am not?” Jamie was confused too.
“I do not understand. But made love to each other, didn’t we Alexander? I was supposed to merge you and your wolf!”
Jamie stood up and started pacing the room. Alexander watched her with anger, dark points that were called his eyes.
This was the height of her recklessness.
“If I am still alive then it doesn’t work. I must journey to the isle of the blessed and have a word with Red”
Alexander scoffed.
He rubbed his palm together and he rested his elbow on his thighs.
“I thought you were dead” he murmured.
“I was supposed to be. Something is wrong somewhere” Jamie murmured as she continued pacing.
“I agree with you. You, my dear, you are cruel”
Alexander told her. He stood up to go outside
He needed some fresh air to get over the shock that he had just experienced. He almost made it halfway towards the river, when he heard the sound of a galloping horse.
Alexander turned around to see Jamie riding away on a horse.
“Son of a tooth!” He cussed and started running towards the nearest horse near the eastern corner.
He rode off towards her in rage, it wasn’t long before he caught up with her and made the dangerous jump from his horse to hers in mere seconds.
He made the horse stop and he got down and carried his wife down too.
“Have you gone crazy? You could have snapped your neck, Alexander”
“No. I have done that jump exactly five times in my life and two of those times was to save your sorry self, Janessa but dear lord, I want to hurt you so badly right now!” Alexander admitted to her.
Jamie slowed down her pounding heart enough to actually listen.
“I am sorry. I didn’t see any reason why I should watch as you fade away when I can do something about it. Something went wrong somewhere, Alexander and I am going to find out from Red”
“Well, you are not leaving my sight!” Alexander told her through his clenched teeth. He turned around and looked away, hoping that the bigger rage that he could feel sipping through his pores would go away and leave him with some sanity.
“If you won’t let me go to the isle of the blessed to see Red, then I will bring her here” Jamie replied.
Alexander turned around and he found her on the ground unconscious. She was off to the dream world.
“Jamie…oh God damnit!” Alexander murmured and lifted her and he started walking back to the riverside house.
***
Jamie was in the dream world by the oak tree but Red wasn’t there.
“Show yourself!”
Red didn’t appear before her.
Jamie closed her eyes and she remembered that she was a higher rank of witches than the woman in red.
“I said show yourself or burn by my hand!”
When Red appeared, she was far away from Jamie.
Jamie willed herself to go closer and suddenly there she was standing so close to each other now.
“You’ve slept with him, haven’t you? You tried to kill yourself for him, didn’t you? I never thought you would make that choice or that he would let you, your majesty”
Red appeared confused and frightened.
“Why am I still alive, Red?” Jamie asked and took a step closer.
Red was mute.
“You will explain yourself to me! Or so help me lord, I will hunt you down and plunge a danger through your chest!” Jamie yelled at her.
“Janessa?”
Jamie turned around and she saw Alexander standing beside her.
“What’s he doing here, Red?” Jamie questioned her.
“I don’t know. I can openly presume that your anger made the dream world permeable to him, Mistress” Red answered.
“I slept with Janessa and she is still alive and I am still separated from my wolf…you would do well to tell us what the bloody hell is going on?!” Alexander yelled at her.
Red was even more terrified now.
“Speak!” Jamie commanded her.
“I lied, okay?!” Red yelled. “So, I lied about everything. Sleeping with the Alpha King wouldn’t be deadly to you or merge his wolf. I. Lied. To. You” Red answered her.
“Why? Why would you do that?!” Jamie asked her.
“Because it’s your destiny to kill the Alpha, not save his life. My duty all along was to get you to separate King Alexander from Alpha Max! It was certainly the easiest option from murdering yourself and I thought when you asked for the spell that you intended to fulfill your destiny!”
