Inside, the kitchen where all the working maid stopped preparing the meal on Li Na’s solemn command had troubled faces in the beginning, yet now they stood watching the young woman carry out in the kitchen efficiently.
Occasionally Li Na would ask them for ingredients she could not locate herself. Their job was just to point out in the direction from distance, and Li Na fetches the item to proceed with her task. As Li Na prepared the soup, the ladies watched her in growing wonder and admiration, she put out the deliciously aromatic dishes which can even arouse the appetite of the dying person they murmured praises in low voices amongst each other while Li Na garnished them beautifully.
…
By the time, Li Na arrived with two maids behind her carrying the tray of dishes and essentials for the setup, the Doctor had then arrived and been examining the weak little boy lying on the bed with his almost shutting eyes. Li Na’s eyes instantly meet his, as Little Tiger’s misty gaze was implanted on the door, she gave her little one a smile of comfort as she walked in and his eyes came back to life widely opening.
The old woman Doctor stood up after doing a thorough wellness check-up, she asks for Lu Jianjun’s attention who has turned to look at the young lady who just entered through the door.
“He’ll be fine, but Mr. Lu…” as the old woman spoke they stepped a distance away from the bed. Li Na tuned in to their talk from a range as she simultaneously guided the two maids for the required arrangement.
With Li Na around giving directions both maids had no problem working around Little Tiger, the little one didn’t create any ruckus and paid all his fatigued attention to his beloved mother cautiously contemplating over what she was systematizing for his sake. She’d place a small table before him and gently helped him to sit in a comfortable position.
Sidetracked the discussion, Lu Jianjun was standing close to the sofa corner listening to Doctor’s instruction but on a whim, his eyes frequently chased back to her since Li Na entered. He let her have Little Tiger’s side all by herself and moved to sides with the old woman as she speaks of Little Tiger’s health but could not distance his thoughts from Li Na’s occupation.
Lu Jianjun intently watched Li Na settling down on the bed beside Little Tiger. She places a gentle hand on the boy’s forehead, checking the temperature.
“Who is the young lady?” his gaze averted back to the lady Doctor who now stares at Li Na in apprehension trying to recall if she had seen the girl before with Little Tiger.
“She is…” Lu Jianjun felt a temporary lack of words, confused about what and how Li Na would like to be expressed her relationship with him as they both have none for themselves to name except for the only bond of Little Tiger’s parents which he does not prefer to reveal in front of any outsiders.
Then suddenly Lu Jianjun was remembered of his own words, ‘she belongs to me,’ which he has said to Zhang Han easily, but could not hastily utter it to anybody else, especially when he is sure Li Na can hear him says those words. They haven’t yet decided on the title with a suitable role for Li Na in association with Lu Jianjun.
Lu Jianjun kept silent for some seconds, then turned to glance at Li Na feeling conflicted he tried to sort his mind, “She is…” he tried again but paused as Li Na looked up at him with wonderment. He knew she is listening, he looked away spontaneously.
“…Little Tiger’s new caretaker,” he said irritably and Li Na clenched her teeth. The color faded from her cheeks. Throwing a pointed glare at him, concealing the smoldering fury, she swiveled back to Little Tiger. Lu Jianjun frowned to see those emotions cloud her eyes for those seconds before they were gone.
“Oh, I see, that’s why Little Tiger is quiet in her presence,” the lady Doctor answered and simply nodded in the fact’s realization, why had she thought of the girl to be someone special and not to be caretaker of the child she felt silly of question and went back to their previous talk.
Li Na placed the hot bowl of soup on the small table before Little Tiger. He gave it a disinterested glance. His expression telling the mood of his appetite and reluctance to eat in this foul feverish state.
Li Na had anticipated the response, and his indifference to eating did not make her back down. Instead, she smiled and said politely, “Little Tiger, you should not sleep on an empty stomach,” and extended the small bowl. She would love to fed him but didn’t know how he would react, so she prompted him to eat.
Little Tiger made no move to eat he simply gaze at the bowl. It looks delicious and smells aromatic. He was recalled the time when he’d forced Lu Jun-hui to steal the food Li Na had cooked. As much as the food and the fact that she’d cooked it made him contented while eating. He knew it’ll taste good like that time but didn’t feel like eating now.
When repeatedly told to eat Little Tiger averted his head to the side ignoring all reasonings.
Until Li Na had to move closer, taking the bowl she used the spoon to scoop the soup, finding it extremely hot for a child to eat, she slowly blew some air before holding it to his mouth.
The moment he saw her doing it, he didn’t know where his reluctance went and Little Tiger returned his attention to the food, a slight frown forming on his head as he looked up to meet her expectant gaze, adherently hoping he won’t deny it.
“Please…just eat a little,” she said coaxingly, “I won’t bother you with anything else…” she paused when Little Tiger grabbed her hand with his tiny one. For a moment, she turned absolutely still, feeling anxious he might just push it back but was shocked to see him promptly sipping the bite.
From the sides, the lady Doctor who watched it all happens frown and took a second look at the young lady. The affection and surrender Little Tiger showed towards the girl is not the normal thing the boy could show towards any random caretaker. She must be someone more special thinking this she looked up to Lu Jianjun who too noticed the exchange of tenderness and didn’t know why it does not make him feel humiliated to be perceived as a liar, Little Tiger’s actions towards Li Na only confirmed the love he’d for her that ultimately put the girl on his special person’s pedestal which no one can reject.
A dynamic smile lurked on his lips as Lu Jianjun regarded the lady Doctor’s suspicious gaze on him. “Butler Wu will see you out,” he said and looked at the old man indicating to show her the way out.
The lady Doctor didn’t mind after she was done discussing and giving medication for Little Tiger, she took the lead from Butler Wu but before stepping out of the room on a curious impulse of seeing her face again she turned around to watch Li Na feeding Little Tiger calmly. She’ll never forget the girl’s face now.
Lu Jianjun came around and firstly commanded the two maids standing near the wall to wait outside the room and wait for their summon. They immediately rushed out.
Then, Lu Jianjun sat on the bed across Li Na, he felt the space has now become more suitable and comfortable with only three of them in each others’ company.
Intently ignoring the man, Li Na fed Little Tiger and the dozy boy ate silently.
Whenever she moves the spoon towards Little Tiger’s lips the boy would grab her hand somewhat wanting to reject eating but would be obliged because it tastes so good he could not stop.
Lu Jianjun frowned on seeing the dishes made by her. “What is in that?” he questioned pointing to the soup bowl she was feeding to Little Tiger.
Not for the sake of question but to feed some more to Little Tiger’s belly, Li Na began to explain the dish in its entirety. She would tell one benefit and scoop the soup, blew on it, and listening to the benefits the soup’s ingredients contain to improve his weak health, Little one willingly opens his mouth wide for her to filled and gulp it down.
Little Tiger listened to her talk intently and along with the boy somewhere at some point, someone else had also turned focused on her. These peaceful moments with her were rare to find for both people, who have their separate issues regarding her.
While listening Lu Jianjun lost the awareness of things she describing and found himself watching her intensely, she was so passionate about Little Tiger that every ingredient she told had something to benefit Little Tiger’s weak form. Seems like she had somewhat scrutinized the boy closely and the confidence she has while describing Little Tiger’s illness as if she knows more than the doctor herself does.
However, Little Tiger was in total awe of finding his mother had put so much effort just to cook some dishes for him he could not contain the excitement and joy bubbling up in him and in no time finished it all feeling good. Just then Butler Wu entered with medication given by the Doctor, instead of giving it to Lu Jianjun like always, in a spontaneous act Butler Wu gave it to the mother figure. Lu Jianjun went still as he watched Li Na read the prescription thoroughly before she turned to Little Tiger, caressing his cheeks she said few polite words and Little lad agreed to gulp down the medicine.
With a contented smile, Little Tiger curled up near Lu Jianjun’s lap and slept peacefully.. His body relaxed knowing he’s in Lu Jianjun presence as his back touching his father, but his eyes remained on his mother until it shut down.
