In the middle of the night when everyone was sleeping and it was ghost quiet, incapable to sleep after a nap Lu Jianjun went to study and slumped on his chair swiveled before the tall glass window in the room, letting a frosty breeze hit his form as he tried to relax.
The night’s peace seems fragile in front of Li Na’s sharp questions flocking his head savagely demanding the answers he doesn’t have. It was harmful to his sanity to recall the night spent with Li Na. They did it but…
Silently, he gazed into the darkness for a while Lu Jianjun had thought he’d developed a tolerance towards unwanted happening in his past over the years. Because that night was like a crate of emotions that held grave regrets and brutal mistakes. His personal life was supposed to end on that night but somehow it became the rise of an unwanted beginning.
Li Na’s voice resounded in his head. Why? He doesn’t know…
Have you committed a crime? He is not sure…
Was it not mutually consented? he doubts it…
A deafening silence came over Lu Jianjun as he threw his head back on the headrest of the chair and closed his eyes. Then, with a heavy unwillingness and after years of disregard, he tried to recall the fateful night with Li Na. Intense insecurity mingled with confusion flickered on his features as the bleak images glimmered in his mind.
Dreadful, Li Na was standing before him…separating them was a pool of broken wine bottles blended with the blood of two dead men lying on the floor he’d just killed.
Too many drinks had his head too heavy and dizzy to get up and walk out. Still, the sharp pain in his body made him aware of his condition, and then he raised his right hand and heavily tugged out the glass piece of wine bottle stuck in his left arm stabbed by one of the deads. As he pulled it out, a stream of fiery blood rushed down his left arm to the back of his hands, pouring in quick drops.
Agitated by blood, he jerked his bleeding hand to whisked off the fluid and tried to get up while often shaking his head to clear up the fuzziness, but he stumbled on his feet about to fall when the girl rushed forwards to give him support.
With teeth clenched against the pain in his shoulder and arm, it was then he turned to see the girl’s face quite blurred in his vision, her body shaking from fear. He doesn’t know why and how she got there but she was on the verge of crying while cowering back. He let her go and motioned to step back. And Li Na distances him.
Amidst the immense struggle, he got up and gave a sharp shake to his head as if waking it to sober up and took a few heavy steps thought he’d arrived at the door, a rush of dizziness came over and he took the support of the wall. But no longer able to stand firmly he slid down the wall, leaving a crimson trail of his blood. In a panicked mood, looking at the blood, Li Na screeched and rushed forward. He distantly heard her cryings cause a freezing numbness was taking over his body and mind as he wanted to clamp a hand over her mouth to stop her from calling out it was not a safe place for neither of them.
As Li Na came closer to help him everything was getting increasingly blurry he once again tried to straighten from the wall, but his balance was lost and he staggered into her. His body was utterly cold to feeling any sensations as he collapsed with his back against the wall.
Partially aware of how long it’s been, how she’d cured his injuries, and how she’d taken care of him. There were times he would stir in the middle of the night now and then…there was a warmth beside him and that impulsively inched closer to him and as that warmness engulfed him tightly by that time he’d lost his awareness completely… he used to come to consciousness now and then only to fall back to sleep within few minutes which used to feel like hours and didn’t know until one night he woke up with a nightmare that he had spent three nights with her.
He frowned and sweat broke out on his face with a gore visual of the nightmare running wild in his head. When he vaguely sensed that someone was taking charge of him, yet it felt like a dream. Hazily, Lu Jianjun felt someone shove something into his mouth. He coughed lightly as it was sour and dry powder and just as he was about to splutter it out, the next moment gentle lips covered his mouth. It was unfamiliar touch and a revolting feeling rose up in his chest. Uncomfortable, Lu Jianjun frowned. Suddenly he grabbed the arms of the body pressed against his in a vice grip and immediately pushed it away.
Blank with agonizing fear, Lu Jianjun opened his eyes. And Li Na cowered in a corner with folded knees held close to her chest. Her heart began beating loudly, an obnoxious feeling filling her chest as stormy Lu Jianjun looked dreadful. He should be angry that she had come over against his wishes. He should be scowling at her, but it shocked him to see their condition. He could only imagine what has happened here, he jolted awake sitting up fighting the headache and dizziness…he looked around for water to only find out the stuff in his mouth lying on the table in a packet. It had a powerful impact, and it was no medicine but some drugs.
It alarmed him further, he instantly spits it out on the floor, coughing slightly. Then, his dark eyes shifted to the one who attempted to drug him. Extremely angry, Lu Jianjun’s eyes instantly meet with the shivering young Li Na’s teary brown ones and his whole being froze for an instant.
His eyes then moved to look at her colorless face to hazardous clothes who now cowered in a corner in a distance. A fit of inexplicable anger swelled within him and the stormy Lu Jianjun glared at her, “Who are you?” he asked, his voice thundering and the girl burst out crying.
Just then the cellphone on the study table rang and Lu Jianjun woke up from his stupor and swiveled back on his chair.
“Hello!?”
Lu Jianjun picked up the phone but for a long while couldn’t speak his head clouded with past. From the other side, Wang Dawei continued to ask for a response, “Hello? Lu Jianjun are you listening…”
“Yeah,” Lu Jianjun replied late.
Wang Dawei sighed in relief, and said, “Sorry, If I disturbed your sleep? Couldn’t wait to ask you this?” he sounded thrilled about something.
“And What is it about?” Lu Jianjun got up from his chair and went out on the balcony to talk. He felt a lot better when the cold night breeze awakened him up completely.
“The invitation of CEO Zhang’s wedding reception. Are you planning to give a visit?” Wang Dawei’s eyes ran over and over the classic golden embellished invitation card on his hand with the name of the Bride and Groom on it.
“Invitation?” Lu Jianjun frowned and then he seemed to be remembered, “Oh, I forgot about the party…When is it?”
“Tomorrow evening, 7 p.m,” Wang Dawei answered his tone low in spirit, he then asked, “Are you going?”
Lu Jianjun stayed silent while pondering and replied, “Yes, and I guess I’m taking a date with me!”
“Who?”
“Li Na!”
