Queen of The Scalpel - Chapter 43
“How about it? Isn’t it miraculous?”
“I saw it well so take it back now.”
“What’s up with that reaction? Aren’t you surprised?”
But Gote just had a hard expression.
“It’s a lie.”
“What?”
“You’re believing that nonsense written on the paper?”
“…!”
Gote clicked his tongue.
“The theory is nice. If a patient with a bleeding spleen comes in, it’s worth a try. But…there’s now way a surgery like that is possible. I don’t know who it is, but they wrote it pretty well.”
Ben firmly replied.
“It’s not a lie.”
“What?”
“It’s real, my friend. This patient is in our hospital! He was hit with a bullet and perfectly alive right now!”
“What…are you talking about?”
Gote spoke like he didn’t understand. Ben frustratedly answered him.
“It’s true! And at your hospital! I already confirmed it. Who was it? The one that did this miraculous surgery?”
Gote thought of the report he had received some time ago. ‘There was a patient with a bullet wound a while ago, right? And the person with him had the insignia of the Imperial Palace so after an emergency surgery, he was moved to the Imperial Cross Hospital.’ He remembered the patient because the person with him was an important person.
“Is the patient’s name…Randol?”
“Yes, Sir Randol! He was shot directly on the spleen and couldn’t live, but your hospital saved him.”
Gote gaped. The nonsensical theory on the paper was true?
“Who’s the doctor that led the surgery?”
Gote thought of the report he read. The person who participated in the surgery was…
“Grayam. Professor Grayam led the surgery.”
His disciple Rose participated as well, but Gote thought she had participated as his assistant. It was understandable. Rose was a young girl who had only been at the hospital for a short time now.
“Hu! Grayam! That doctor who’s called a young genius? Amazing! Really!!”
Ben exclaimed. He had been taking an interest in Grayam who was leaving his mark amongst the young doctors. He was planning on taking him to the Imperial Cross Hospital after he got some more experience…but he had performed this incredible surgery? ‘I must make a spot for him immediately. Since he did this big surgery, no one will be able to say anything about it.’The splenectomy Grayam had performed was really amazing. Ben excitedly spoke like a little child.
But…the Director Gote’s reaction was a bit strange.
“Uh…there’s a bit of a problem.”
“Hm? What’s that?”
Gote frowned, and spoke.
“After that day…Grayam is on an absence without leave.”
“…!”
“He’s locked himself up in his house all day. Like he was greatly shocked by something.”
He spoke like he didn’t understand why Grayam was going that.
***
Grayam really was on an absence without leave. Not even saying anything to Elise, his disciple. ‘Just what happened?’ She wondered. ‘Is it…because of the surgery?’ She thought maybe that was the case, and there wasn’t really anything else that might’ve made him this way.
‘That day after the surgery, he was a bit weird.’ The morning after the surgery, Grayam was different than normal. Like he was shocked by something. So she had to finish the surgery up. ‘He’ll be back so.’ With those thoughts, she continued to work hard at the hospital. But the next day came and the day after that, and she didn’t hear anything from him. ‘Did something happen to him?’
Eventually, she decided to visit the Fallon residence. The Baron residence was in the Tras territory of Londo.
“Be careful, miss.”
“Thank you, Sir Belton.”
A young knight of the Clarence family guarded her. Belton complained like he didn’t like the situation.
“Do you have to come here yourself? If you have business with him, you could’ve just called him to the residence.”
“Sit Belton. Baron Fallon is my teacher. And I am his student.”
Elise responded. Belton had an embarrassed face at her short and firm voice.
“Sorry. I just don’t want you to be tired Carriages don’t really travel well in this neighborhood, and you have to walk a lot…”
“Sir Belton can protect me.”
At her soft words, Belton blushed.
“Of course! I’ll protect you from everything!!”
Elise chuckled.
“Yes, I trust you.”
“Yes! Leave it to me!”
Actually, Belton didn’t really like Elise. Because she was selfish and mean. That wasn’t just what Belton thought, but what all the workers of the Clarence family thought. No one liked the lady.
But…one day, she completely changed. She always put others first. At first the workers thought it was temporary. Even when she came to apologize, they just let it in one ear and out the other. ‘But it wasn’t temporary.’
However, even after time passed, she was always kind to the workers, and showed warmth. The workers started to open up to her, and obeyed her and liked her. They were touched that a 16 year old could be so thoughtful.
‘Is this obvious of a lady of the Clarence family?’ Now, she wasn’t a mean girl, but the precious treasure of the family.
‘But it is concerning that she wants to be a doctor…’ Belton thought to himself.
