Queen of The Scalpel - Chapter 44

Her mind to help others was incredible, but that small girl wanted to be a doctor? He was worried that she would get sick.
“Are we almost there yet?’
“It’s at 68th Tras Street, so I think we’re almost there. Oh, it’s dirty there so please be careful!”
After some more walking, they soon arrived at a humble two-story building.
“I think…it’s here.”
Belton said with an unsure face. The address was here, but it was too shabby to say it was a Baron residence. Elise lifted her face to look at the sign on the door.
-Fallon Residence-
Faded letters had Grayam’s surname on it. It seemed like it was the right house.
“I’ll go inside to greet him. I’m sorry but…can you wait outside for a bit?”
“Yes, I’ll be waiting.”
Elise gratefully smiled and knocked.
“Is anyone here?”
After waiting a while, the door creaked open. The person who appeared wasn’t Grayam, but a kind-looking maid.
“Who is it?”
“Ah…I’m Sir Grayam’s student, Rose. Is this his residence?”
“Yes, it is. But…it might be difficult to meet with him now.”
She thought for a moment and spoke.
“Would you like to come in for now?”

Like on the outside, it was also humble on the inside. An empty house, as if the maid had tidied up a bit, it was somewhat organized. While it was empty, there were a lot of books. ‘They’re all medical books…’
Elise inwardly exclaimed looking at the books. There was Count Graham’s research, medical history books, and the newest studies. It seemed like his collection had every possible thing about the medical field it could.
And the books all looked like they had been read several times. She could see his effort for learning.
“It’s very humble, right? There wasn’t anything I could give you…so this is the coffee that he likes to drink.”
“Ah, thank you.”
Elise drank the coffee the maid gave her.
“But what should we do? I think it’ll be difficult for you to meet him…”
“Did something happen? Is he sick?”
“That’s not it.”
“Then…?”
“Haa.”
She sighed.
“He’s absorbed in his research.”
“Pardon?”
She thought maybe she had misheard something. Research? What research?
“A few days ago, after a night shift…he said he saw an incredible surgery. And that he would study that. He went up to his room and hasn’t come down since.”
“……”
Elise dropped her mouth. Could it be? Was that surgery…?
“Sometimes he gets that absorbed in stuff. This time, he seems to be completely absorbed. Saying that he saw a miraculous surgery.”
The maid apologetically smiled.
“Please understand. After all his relatives passed away from an epidemic in Londo, he put everything in focusing on his studies.”
At the unexpected words, she looked at the portrait on the wall. A father, mother, brother, sister, and little boy. It was a portrait filled with happiness, and Grayam looked like a little boy of about 10 years old. Unlike his usual cold self, he had a cute face.
“20 years ago, everyone passed away except for me and him.”
It was the First Great Epidemic in Londo. It was an epidemic that killed 15,000 just in Londo.
“After he lost his family like that, he dreamt of becoming a doctor, and is working hard to this day.”
The maid’s voice was filled with grief and affection for Grayam. Elise felt sorrowful as well. What would’ve gone through the mind of a young boy of 10 years old to become a doctor after losing his family?
It wasn’t an easy path for an orphan that wasn’t exactly that well off.
“Anyway, I think his research is almost over, so don’t worry too much. He said that he would leave for the hospital around tomorrow.”
“Ah…alright.”
Elise nodded. It was a relief nothing bad had happened.
“Then I’ll take my leave. Please deliver my greetings to him.”
“Thank you for coming.”
And with relief, she headed back to her residence with Belton. But there was something she didn’t know. When she was leaving the Fallon residence, there was someone looking at her back from the second floor. It was Grayam.
“…”
He continued to look at her until she was gone.
“Rose.”
He muttered the girl’s name. His eyes were burning up with confusion and passion.

The next day, Grayam really arrived at the hospital as if his absence never happened. He looked normal.
“Doctor, you’re here.”
“Yes.”
Grayam just coldly nodded at Elise’s greeting. Did he organize his thoughts? Or was he hiding them? The emotions that were violently waving in his eyes the day before weren’t there anymore.
“The Director said you should come see him if you arrive…because of the surgery that night…”
“Alright. Rose, let’s go together.”
“Me?”
“Yes.”
“Why me…?”
The person that the royal physician and Gote had called for was Grayam and not her.
“Let’s go together. I have something to say.”
Something to say? What was he going to say that she had to go with him? Elise had a questioning face, but Grayam didn’t explain anymore. So the two went to the director’s office.
