Queen of The Scalpel - Chapter 45
The director’s office was located in the middle of the professor’s offices.
Elise didn’t know why Grayam was taking her and followed him with her head tilted in curiosity. They soon arrived in front of the room, and Grayam knocked.
“It’s Grayam.”
“Come in.”
A voice full of discomfort could be heard from inside. And…when they entered, Elise was surprised by the person with Director Gote. ‘That person? The royal physician Viscount Ben?’ As the past empress, she definitely knew who he was. Like this life, she was weak in her past life, and Viscount Ben had treated her every time. ‘Wait. I met him in this life too.’ When she was younger, she was treated in Rosedale Hospital, but she had received treatment at the Imperial Cross Hospital as well. So she had met the director, Viscount Ben.
‘What if he recognizes me?’ Viscount Ben was looking at her in surprise.
“That girl is?”
“She’s the new disciple we got this time. What’s wrong, Ben?”
“No….she looks so similar to a young lady that I know….”
“Really?”
“Yes, very similar. I was surprised.”
“Whose family is she the lady of?”
But Ben shook his head.
“It’s not. Well, I guess they just look alike. Since that lady would never be a disciple at a hospital.”
Ben thought of the fancy Lady Clarence that was called the flower of the ball. ‘She can’t be. There’s no way she would be working as a disciple in this Teresa Hospital.’ She was different from Lady Clarence, who emanated a mischievous aura, because this girl had a soft and smooth presence.
‘But they really look similar. People who didn’t know would think they’re twins. When was the last time I saw her? I guess if she grew up nice, she might look like this now.’ The girl was beautiful, but she was dressed in simple clothes. There was no way she was the same person as the rumored Lady Clarence.
“Anyhow, Graham. I heard you were absent for a while, what happened?”
Director Gote asked in a complaining voice. Grayam bowed his head. Whatever the reason, being absent was his fault.
“Sorry.”
“I like you, but this is too much, mm? Working in the hospital isn’t a hobby. Do you want to pack your stuff and leave?”
“I’m sorry.”
Director Gote continued to scold him until Viscount Ben stopped him with a smile.
“Haha, that’s enough, friend. He seems to be reflecting enough. And since he did ‘that surgery,’, doesn’t he deserve to rest a bit?”
Director Gote’s lip twitched. It seemed like his friend wanted to speak about the miraculous surgery as soon as possible.
“Professor Grayam? It’s been a while. I’m Ben. Do you remember me?”
“Yes, Sir Viscount.”
The leader of the medical field in the empire and the newest doctor Grayam definitely had met before. Ben spoke.
“I really wanted to see you. How did you do it?”
“Pardon me, do what?”
“What? The splenectomy! You led the surgery, right?”
Ben looked at him with a glowing face.
“It’s really amazing! I was so surprised. I was observing you with interest, but you did this! This is a surgery that paves the way for the medical field.”
“…”
Ben continued to speak excitedly. But Grayam’s reaction was strange. He needed to reply, but he was staying silent.
“How did you think of such a surgery?”
“…”
But there was no response. The moment Ben and Gote made questioning faces, he spoke.
“That’s…not a question to ask me, but to this child.”
“D-Doctor?”
Elise turned to look at him with a surprised face. Ben asked like he didn’t understand as well.
“What are you talking about? Ask not you, but that young girl?”
Instead of replying, Grayam look at Elise. And he smiled.
“…!”
A soft smile unlike his usual cold self. And he spoke like it was obvious.
“Because the person who led the surgery isn’t me, but this child. You should ask this child.”
“!!!”
***
It was a sudden announcement. Everyone opened their mouths in shock.
“What kind of nonsense is that?”
Director Gote asked in a stern tone.
“There’s a time to joke, and a time to be serious. Even though this guy looks like this, he’s the royal physician. But you’re making ridiculous jokes. Grayam, do you want to leave the field?”
He looked like he definitely didn’t believe him. That was understandable. This tiny girl had done such a great surgery like the splenectomy. This kind of joke wasn’t even funny. But Grayam spoke with a serious face again.
“It’s true. Why would I lie about this? I only assisted, the leading surgeon was this child.”
“…!”
But their faces were still filled with disbelief. Ben laughed.
“Grayam, be honest. You’re saying not you, but this girl did the splenectomy?”
Grayam looked at Ben and Gote with a firm face.
“Yes, it’s the whole truth. If this is a lie, God can punish me. If you still don’t believe me, you can ask the other assistant who participated in the surgery.”
“…!”
Their faces hardened. They realized Grayam wasn’t lying.
“This girl…did the splenectomy?”
