Queen of The Scalpel - Chapter 73
The tool in her hand was nothing other than a sharp knife. Elise was planning on using the knife like a scalpel to make a hole in her neck and create a pathway for her to breathe. It was an emergent tracheostomy. ‘It’s dangerous but.’
It was splitting the neck with a knife. There was no way it wasn’t dangerous. If she hurt the vein in the neck, it meant immediate death. ‘But that’s the only way left!’ She began right away. Now, there were less than 30 seconds left. She needed to do it in time.
First, she moved her head back so she could see her neck better. At the same time, she used her opposite hand to check her body. ‘Somewhere that can avoid the veins and nerves. It can’t be too high or too low.’ She touched the 3rd tracheal ring. ‘Here!’
She instantly moved her knife. It was cutting the neck, but there wasn’t any hesitation in her movements. If she hesitated, the patient would die. What she needed was a strong resolve.
“U-Uh! Stop her!”
“No!”
While people continued to clamor around, she shouted.
“Please don’t disturb us! If she is bothered, the Duchess cannot live! I’ll definitely save her, so please wait!”
“…?!”
It was a shout filled with desperation. The moment people paused, the knife pierced through the skin! Blood spurted out, getting on her face and her white dress. The ladies nearby screamed.
“Aaack!”
But she didn’t even blink an eye and continued with the surgery. ‘3 cm! The cut can’t be too deep or too wide!’ That wasn’t the only thing she had to worry about. She couldn’t touch the important organs.
Under normal conditions, she would’ve anesthetized her first, but there wasn’t enough time. She focused and moved her knife down.
Blood spurted out again, and the ballroom turned into pandemonium.
“Stop her quickly! Now!”
And at that moment, Elise inwardly shouted to herself. ‘It went in precisely! I only have to clear the airway now!’
She had rushed through it, but it seemed like it had been accomplished without much problems. She could faintly see the piece of food. That was probably what was blocking her airway. About 10 seconds had passed. ‘It’s not over yet.’
She needed to insert a tube to maintain her breathing. She saw a hard tube that was on the ground and pushed it in her airways. ‘Please! I hope the breathing comes back!’ She had done everything she could. Since her airway was cleared, the Duchess had to breathe like normally now. If she didn’t breathe, she had to do CPR, but then her survival rate would decrease. ‘Please!’
And…! After some minutes that seemed like hours. The Duchess breathed out. Elise also sighed in relief.
“Sigh…”
She had barely saved her. ‘It’s a relief. Really.’ A bead of sweat dripped down her forehead. There wasn’t just sweat. There was blood on her face and her dress. But she didn’t have the mind to do so.
Everyone around her stared at her. They were looking at her with shock and confusion. It was obvious. She had cut the neck of the Duchess who was related to the Imperial Family.
It was for emergency treatment, but she had still touched an Imperial Family member’s body. ‘Since emergent tracheostomy wasn’t common at this time.’ It was common on Earth, but not here. ‘I’ll suffer a bit.’ She closed her eyes at the upcoming storm coming her way.
For the crime of hurting an Imperial Family member’s body, she might be punished. ‘But there was nothing I could do. She would’ve died if I didn’t do anything.’ She had the abilities to, so how could she ignore her?
And it was then. She heard footsteps, and something cold from the back of her neck.
“…!”
It was the Royal Guard. A Royal Guard coldly opened her mouth with her at swordpoint.
“You’ll have to come with us, maam.”
She shivered at the feeling of the coldness at her neck because it reminded her of the guillotine. She pushed those thoughts away and calmly lifted her head.
“Yes, I understand. Please lead the way.”
The Royal Guard’s eyes shook. There was a sword on her neck, but she was too calm. But that wasn’t what she was thinking. ‘Since I didn’t do anything wrong.’
It was a situation that others could misunderstand, but she had only acted to save her patient. She didn’t need to back down. But before she left, there was something she had to say.
“I have something to request before I leave. Please disinfect the Duchess’s wound.”
“…what did you say?”
The Royal Guard thought he heard something wrong. What did she say with the sword at her neck? But he hadn’t misheard. Rather, she started to explain.
“It was an emergency situation so I wasn’t able to disinfect it. She could have an infection. Please tell the royal doctors so the wound can be disinfected.”
“…”
“Let’s go. Please lead the way.”
The Royal Guard took Elise away with surprised faces. They weren’t the only surprised ones. Everyone in the ballroom was looking at her with shock and confusion.”
