Queen of The Scalpel - Chapter 78
Meanwhile, during that time in the White Palace…
Elise was studying. ‘Thankfully I’m feeling a lot better.’ Was it because she slept for about two days? Her condition had improved. Once she was well, she asked her brother to bring her medical books so she could study for the medical license test.
‘Elise, you…! What are you going to do if you get worse?’
Her brother nagged at her about everything, but he still brought her books. ‘But Ren, her oldest brother’s reaction was unexpected.’ He just…quietly looked at her for a moment, before speaking.
“Good job.”
“…?!”
She questioned her ears and wondered if she heard right. But she hadn’t.
“I know it was to save the Duchess. It was dangerous, but you did well.”
Elise smiled at what he said. It was the first time she received a compliment from him.
“Just endure it a bit more. Since everyone knows the Duchess survived thanks to you, the result will be out soon.”
Soon after, her brother returned to the knightage. He seemed to be busy with things regarding the Creme Expedition.
‘Brother.’ She looked at his back with concerned eyes. ‘You have to be careful.’ She thought of Nicholas from the Francoen Republic, who participated in the anniversary ball. She didn’t know exactly why, but there was probably only one reason for his participation.
‘The Black Continent has been dominated by the Francoen Republic. Earlier than my last life.’
She didn’t know how it happened, but the Republic was more likely to send more forces to the Creme Expedition. If that happened, her eldest brother would have to participate as the vice leader of the Rifle Knightage.
‘But Chris won’t participate.’ In her last life, Chris, her other brother, had lost his life in the war. No matter what happened, she was going to stop his participation in the war this time. ‘Although Ren will be safe and contribute a lot.’ But she was still worried.
How the Creme Expedition would turn out, how her fate would unfold. What would happen to her life after that? She was uncertain.
After her family visited her one by one, she studied for the medical license coming up in the remaining time. ‘It’s actually better that I’m locked up now. If not, I would have been busy because of the anniversary ball and stuff.’
People looked at her with pity because she was locked in the Blood Castle, but she actually liked this. Since she could eat and study, how nice was that? ‘And the results probably aren’t going to be that bad anyway.’
Everyone probably knew that she was doing it to save the Duchess, and outstanding doctors would examine the Duchess’s wound. Then they would know why she did that, so she wasn’t too worried.
‘First Graham. Then Fleming’s pharmacy books.’ It was information she knew already. No, actually, she knew a lot more than these books from all her time on Earth. But she needed to answer the questions on the test with what the empire knew. ‘I have to get a good score to show His Majesty.’
She thought of the conversation she had with the Emperor at the anniversary ball. His suggestion to give up the bet and become the Crown Princess. But she didn’t have any plans to give up.
First of all, this marriage would end tragically for everyone. And most of all, she wanted to choose a doctor’s life. She was definitely going to win and be a doctor. ‘The people won’t really treat me as anything other than the Crown Prince’s fiancee. But I still can’t give up.’
She steeled her resolve and began to study again. On Earth, she had graduated early, entered at the top of her class to Seoul University, and had become the youngest professor! She was educated quite a lot and had a lot of knowledge.
So other than the time she ate, she studied. No, she even decreased the amount of time to eat and focused on her books.
It was one late evening, when she was completely into her books, that someone entered her room. Creak. Even though the old door opened with a sound, she didn’t move. She hadn’t heard because she was focused on her books. ‘He’ shrugged his shoulders when he entered the room.
“Excuse me?”
“…”
“Excuse me? Can you see me? Knock knock.”
He spoke up, but Elise still didn’t hear him. He grinned, feeling mischievous now. He silenced his footsteps on purpose and moved towards her back. Elise still didn’t realize anything amiss. He lowered his head and whispered in her ear.
“What are you looking at, sister-in-law?”
“Kyaaack!”
