Questing System - Chapter 19:Flight
Icarus furiously nodded whilst having a goofy smile on his face. His wings fluttered and expanded as he slowly rose into the air. Complying with his mother’s conditions, he only hovered neared his mother and only about her head height. He was only about the size of a one year old, so it was still pretty high for him. At least it was supposed to be, he had been sky gliding before so this height wasn’t exactly scary as per say. He pirouetted in air, hovering in circle around his mother. ‘Now come down honey. We still have other things to discuss.’ At his mother’s request, he dropped to the ground, with the wings behind him disappearing. ‘Now, Manifest is a skill unique to an Elemental King and as you may have guessed, being an Elemental King means that you are somewhat special.’ He nodded at this. Indeed, he didn’t see people using elementals very often in this world so far. ‘So, I want you to keep your Manifest skill a secret.’ She leaned in close, having a grim expression on her face, ‘you have to promise.’ He nodded with an equally serious expression, which made him look quite cute given that he had the face of a one year old. Sana surpassed her giggle and reached out, ruffling his hair. ‘Now my dear boy, continue practicing the things that your dad has taught you.’ Icarus nodded and did as his mother had told him. He once again fell into a trance, repeating the same process over and over again. ‘Icarus! Time for dinner honey!’
Snapping out of his trance, he yelled back, ‘coming mom!’
At dinner they all dug into their food, nearly cleaning their plates till it was shiny. ‘So,’ Icarus’ father looked towards him, ‘how much trouble did you give your mom?’
Icarus didn’t say anything and smirked as a furious gale started blowing and a set of green wings materialised behind him. Then, they unfolded, stretching to one metre either side of Icarus. His smirk turned into a toothy grin as Daedalus’ mouth dropped open. ‘Honey, not at the dining table.’ His mother sternly scolded him and he nodded, the wings disappearing from behind him and into thin air. His toothy grin was still there though as he stared at his father.
‘That is a lot of progress.’ He was speechless for a long time before replying. Icarus and Sana both burst into laughter at Daedalus’ response. ‘You rascal!’ Then began the chase of Icarus throughout the rest of house.
Daedalus and Sana peeked through Icarus’ door, seeing if he was asleep. ‘To think that he would Complete Obedience so quickly’ Daedalus whispered, watching Icarus peacefully sleeping in his new room.
‘Well, with his talent it was only a matter who was going to guide him.’ Sana nodded and backed out, lightly shutting the door. Daedalus sighed as he looked at Sana. She smiled gently and squeezed his shoulders. ‘So, do we have an agreement honey?’ Daedalus nodded.
‘I can’t stop his talent from flourishing and shining like the diamond he is.’ He looked up, with determination in his eyes, ‘but I won’t let him become arrogant because of it.’
‘Thats okay, I just want him to know the truth.’ She leaned in against his chest. ‘It hurts when he doesn’t know about his great heritage.’
‘I’m sorry.’ Daedalus looked towards the floor.
‘Thats okay darling. Its not your fault.’ Sana shook her head and they both leaned on each other as they made their way into their room.
Icarus’ eyes shot open as soon as the door was shut. Even though it was light, he could hear it due to his enhanced constitution. Sitting up, the green wings materialised behind him. If he wasn’t being careful not to alert parents, he would have probably bounded up to the window. Slowly opening the window, he did a final look around, making sure that no one was around, peeking at him before taking off in a gust of wind.
Whoosh!
The wind rustled through his hair as Icarus rose higher and higher. Due to the wings being made up of the wind, he didn’t have to put much effort into rising in altitude. Going higher and higher, eventually he found himself over a thick blanket of clouds, with the moon casting a flowing silvery light on all the cotton like clouds beneath his feet. The layer of clouds, stretched in all directions, covering everything, like an ocean of fluff.
Icarus took a deep breath, trying not to gasp in amazement. This was probably the view best view he had ever seen. Looking out at the horizon, a feeling of wanting to just fly to the ends of the earth burst out from inside of him. For the first time since coming to this world, he truly wanted to see the outside. He wanted to know just what the world had in store and the magnificent sights that he could see. The clouds beneath him blew open to reveal the house in sight. ‘I guess its time to head back.’ Heaving a sigh, he began descending down back to the house. It wasn’t the right time yet to head off. Obviously due to the fact that he was still only nine months old but more so due to the fact that he felt he wasn’t nearly strong enough.
As Icarus descended down into the house from the cloud layer, far off into the distance, a piece of sky started to distort and ripple. The colours twisted themselves and opened to reveal a figure, wearing leather pants and with brown hair. Daedalus watched his son descend and shook his head. He then flew back to the house himself. Entering through the bedroom window, he found Sana, waiting for him. ‘How was it?’ She smiled helplessly at him.
There was a long silence before Daedalus spoke up again. ‘You are right. I can’t keep him forever, not without taking away his happiness.’
‘So, do you agree to t-‘
‘But,’ Daedalus interrupted Sana, ‘I will not tell him anything until he awakens.’
‘Thats fine honey,’ she sighed and stood up, ‘it is a compromise.’
