- 108 His Majesty Pouts
Soon enough they reached the serene waters of the lake.
Su Li looked around in wonder as she saw the clear waters of the lake and lamented the fact that the lakes in her own time had all been polluted because of the waste being dumped into them.
She looked at the white moon in the sky and the lush green trees at the shores and couldn’t help but have a vague plan to promote such scenic spots for the various banquets that the Imperial family organised all throughout the year.
Just as she was about to drink the wine, she felt dizzy and realised that since she had been drinking for so long, she should sit down or she would surely lose her footing and then the next news the Imperial Capital will hear would be about how the drunk monarch dies because he couldn’t keep hold of himself.
For a second Su Li felt as if her thoughts were going in a nonsensical direction but she didn’t pay any heed to it and simply sat down ungracefully on the ground and wiggled around a bit to find a comfortable spot so that the pebbles wouldn’t poke her in the behind.
“Ha! Even the pebbles seem to be hell-bent on bullying me”
A light breeze started and a few tree leaves fell on her head which further irritated her.
Ning Fu looked on in faint amusement as the monarch seemed to be irked by everything around him and then the emperor raised his head and shouted at the tree.
“What? Now, even you – a lifeless husk wants to bully me? Do you even know my identity? I – I am the monarch. Do you believe me that if you shed any more of your leaves on me, I will give an Imperial Edict to chop you off and then be fed to the dogs.”
Su Li stopped at her words and realised that they weren’t right.
What would a dog do with tree branches? They wouldn’t be useful to a carnivore.Find authorized novels in Webnovel, faster updates, better experience,Please click www.novelhall.comfor visiting.
“Bad, bad Zhen! A dog wouldn’t be able to eat the leaves so I will feed the leaves to a rabbit and then collect the dried branches to light up the pyre of anyone who challenges me.”
Ning Fu almost laughed out loud as he saw the monarch admonish himself while tilting his head to the side and lightly tapping the side of his own head as if scolding a recalcitrant child.
Before Su Li could drink the remaining wine in the jar, she knocked the jar out of her hands by mistake and watched with a mournful expression as the entire wine upended on the grass
Ning Fu watched as the emperor’s eyes enlarged as he saw the wine spilt on the floor and then the other person jutted and pouted his lips to such a degree that another wine jar could be hung up on the arch of those pink lips.
Ning Fu almost felt his heartbeat skip when this thought entered his conscious and silently admonished himself.
“Ning Fu ah Ning Fu, this is the monarch of your dynasty, your liege, why are you having such unsightly thoughts about him. All the more when you know that he already has someone else in his heart.”
Meanwhile, Su Li patted herself to try and find another jug of wine and when she came up empty-handed, her hands rested on the grass at her sides and she started pulling out the grass in fistfuls and grumble.
“What is this? Now, even the universe is conspiring against me? Oh please, just give me a break for a few hours and let me forget…”
She couldn’t finish her words above the rising lump in her throat and swallowed convulsively so as to not end up crying.
Before she could start moaning and groaning about life in general, she saw a fair hand entering her field of vision and when she looked up, she saw a man standing by her side and he was holding a jar of wine in his hand as if in supplication.
His posture clearly indicated that he was offering the wine jar to her.
Ning Fu cursed himself an idiot as he walked up to the monarch and offered him his own wine jar.
He knew he shouldn’t allow the emperor to drink any more wine but he couldn’t stop his steps that lead him involuntarily towards the said monarch and before he could make a conscious decision, he had already offered his own wine jar to the monarch.
The proud Son of Heaven l looked up at him and kept on blinking his eyes at him as if he couldn’t really decide if the wine jar was for him.
Ning Fu prompted, “For you, Your Majesty.’
At his words, a beatific smile lit up Su Li’s face but she still confirmed, “Are you sure?”
When the only response to her words was a positive shake of the other person’s head, she happily and clutched the wine jar and held it in her arms.
It looked as if she was afraid that the other person might just change their mind and ask her to return it.
But then her mind caught up with the words the other person had said and she frowned.
She pointed at the person with her finger, “You.”
“Yes, Your Majesty” Ning Fu’s words had a lilting end as if coaxing the monarch.
Su Li shook her head.
She felt that she was thinking too much as she was drunk.
How could a commoner on the streets recognise her since generally, she remained inside the high walls of the Imperial Palace?
Still, she furrowed her brows to see if she could recognise the other person but all she saw was a silhouette of a man looking at her in concern.
She tried to shake her head to shake the cobwebs and the haze of the alcohol but all it did was made her feel even dizzier so she gave up on the idea.
Anyways, even if the other person recognised her, what could they do to her that she hadn’t already experienced?
She had already died twice and both times in excruciating pain so it wasn’t as if she was afraid of death but that also reminded her that she was afraid of one thing – the so-called ‘System’.
Now that she thought about it, the System had been silent for too long.
Is that how a system was supposed to work? All the dramas about such systems she had watched in her original world always had systems that would help their hosts or talk to them from time to time or act cute.
But it was just her bad luck to be saddled with a system that didn’t even show its face once it had given her the secondary task.
Oh! That also reminded her that the system hadn’t told her of the primary task as of yet.
