“What would King Rian gain from choosing me anyway?” She didn’t understand. This was the hardest part. If she knew what the god wanted from her, she would know how to handle him.
Dairon stood up and walked to the window. She saw a flash of anger in his eyes before it disappeared.
His fists were clenched. “If you suddenly found out that your mate had another mate before you, what would your immediate reaction be?”
She was not certain whether or not that was a hypothetical question.. She had been in that exact situation before so it probably wasn’t. She didn’t need to think through it.
“I would be upset.” She answered, based on her own reaction when she found out about Catalyah. She had almost flipped out especially when she realized that she looked a lot like Catalyah.
“That’s it. You are not supposed to be among Catalyah’s greatest fans.” He explained.
She frowned for a moment before it made actual sense. “Wait. King Rian thinks I hate Catalyah? But… what would he gain from that?”
“Someone who can help him eliminate Catalyah from everyone’s memories. She is the bane of his existence. He chose Scarlet for the same reason. She still hates Catalyah even though she is dead, and can’t wait to make everyone forget her.”
She didn’t think she understood everything but she had so many questions that she didn’t know what to ask first. Why would he want her to be his successor if he hated her so much?
Unless he didn’t actually want her to be his successor? She looked up at him. He seemed to have thought about the same thing because he nodded when he saw the shock in her eyes.
She shook her head. “How disgusting. Here I was thinking that Dylan and Nila were the only uncaring grandparents who would stoop so low as to use their grandchild to get whatever they want. She realized that she had just mentioned his grandparents and waved her hands in surrender. “No offense.”
“None taken.” He tore his gaze away from her. “Are you going to let him use you? Who knows? By getting rid of Catalyah, you could eliminate the only rival you think could threaten your position by returning out of the blue. It sounds like a great deal for you.”
He didn’t sound like he was joking and she couldn’t help rolling her eyes at him. “Are you even listening to yourself?”
“You wouldn’t take a deal that would get her out of your life for good?” He asked her.
She closed in and hugged his back. “Of course not. She is part of your past. Your past made the present you, and I love everything about the present you. I wouldn’t try to eliminate any part of you because that would only give me an incomplete daemon and that’s the last thing I want.”
“I want all of you.” She whispered onto his back. ”
“And I want all of you, flower.” He pulled her to his front and kissed her forehead.
“I will find out what he wants if it takes away the rest of my breath.” She declared.
“Then let’s do that together.” He suggested.
She looked up at him and nodded, then snuggled into his arms.
….
The following day, Dairon was once again following King Rian around to run errands. Since it would be the first day of Jasmine’s training with King Rian, they went to his castle together.
They were let in as soon as they arrived and once again, Jasmine felt an unwelcome presence nearby. Within a few seconds, Scarlet left King Rian’s throne room and headed towards them.
So that was the unwelcome presence. Jasmine held onto Dairon’s arm to stop herself from trying to set Scarlet on fire.
The latter smiled in triumph as if she had achieved something that made her proud of herself.
“She is strange.” Jasmine pointed at her retreating back when she was far enough.
“She has always been strange.” Dairon didn’t bother about her.
“Why does she still think that she is the heiress?” Jasmine had never heard of a more ridiculous joke. If King Rian wanted to make her his successor, he would have done so already. What was he still waiting for, eight hundred years later? No wonder she still sought Blaze even though he had been married to Lolanthe for so long. There was definitely something wrong with her brain. Just how slow was it?
The door was opened for them when they arrived at King Rian’s throne room. The guards at the door let them in and they exchanged glances. King Rian must have already learnt of their arrival.
“It’s the two of you.” He feigned ignorance when they walked in. He was sitting on his throne with one leg crossed over the other and fiddling with his scepter.
Jasmine bowed at him slightly while Dairon remained standing. She wanted to jab him so he would show some respect. King Rian was the king after all, he should bow to him even if it was just pretense.
before she could, he let her read his mind. He frowned at his thought process. Demons could not bow to gods. That was true after the feud between them eripted but he was not trying to show his demon side!
She gave up trying to convince him and straightened up.
“I didn’t expect you to come here together.” King Rian looked at the two of them as if they were making a mistake by appearing hand in hand.
“We live together and we are partners. Why can’t we come here together?” He looked at King Rian quizzically.
“You are not married.” He shifted his gaze between the two of them in a way that should have made them self-conscious.
Jasmine merely smiled. “We plan to do that soon. We were going to get your blessing.”
“What kind of crap is that?” He didn’t immediately understand.
“Oh, it’s…” Jasmine played with her fingers in preparation to piss King Rian off. “It’s one of the human realm traditions. A couple usually gets married after getting blessings from both the man’s and woman’s families. Since you won’t let me go to the human realm and get my blessing from my parents, you could substitute them and bless our marriage.”
Dairon almost chuckled at her naughty response. She was obviously pushing King Rian on edge. While such a tradition existed for immortals as well, it was pretty much an oath of loyalty on its own. If a father decided to bless his daughter’s marriage, he would need to vow to protect his son-in-law with his life and if any harm were to befall his son-in-law, it would befall him and his daughter as well.
King Rian didn’t care about Jasmine so the latter part would do him no harm. But if harm were to befall him just because he did something to hurt Dairon, wouldn’t that mean he couldn’t do what he had always wanted to do?
“Shut up!” King Rian lost his temper. “How many times do I have to tell you to forget about that human realm crap? I don’t need it.”
“But I really need to follow the traditions for my marriage.” She exaggerated her sad expression and looked like she would cry if he did not allow her to do it the way she wanted. “I cannot get married without a blessing. I am a human after all. Even if I was originally a demigoddess, I lived as a human for the most part of my life and it means a lot to me.” She placed a hand on her chest dramatically. Dairon would have laughed out loud if he was not enjoying King Rian’s expression. The latter was on the verge of losing his mind.
“Then go to the human realm for all I care!” He roared. “Once you are done with that blessing nonsense, you can come back and focus on doing what you need to do.”
Dairon frowned slightly when he heard the last part. King Rian was not referring to Jasmine’s mission as his apprentice. What was it that he thought Jasmine needed to do?
He compelled the god and got his brain in control then asked, “What is it you really want, Rian?”
King Rian’s eyes looked blue and unfocused as he responded. “I want all demons dead.”
Dairon’s brows wiggled. That was not a first. But, “What does Jasmine have to do with it?”
“She is unlucky. If she marries a demon, he will die.”
