Reborn As The Daemon’s Wife - Chapter 144
Jasmine’s eyes flared. What was that supposed to mean? She looked up at Dairon and he was just as confused.
“How is my marriage to a demon going to ensure all demons die? Will you marry me off to one demon, divorce us and marry me off to another?” She asked with a hint of sarcasm but the thought of it terrified her. He wouldn’t really try to do that, right?
The compelling spell seemed to lose its strength for a moment and King Rian came back to his senses.
“No!” She muttered under her breath. He couldn’t regain his senses before answering her!
His eyes lost focus again. Apparently, Dairon had regained control over him.
“How is it going to work?” She demanded.
“I will make Ulke pledge his loyalty to me..” King Rian smirked. He seemed to realize what he had just said a second later but it was too late. He couldn’t take his words back.
“Make a demon pledge his loyalty to you?” Dairon grabbed King Rian’s neck.
“Dairon! You can’t do that.” She grabbed his arm. His grip around King Rian’s neck was so tight that if she pulled his hand away, she might end up hurting the latter.
“I’m going to reverse time if you don’t stop.” She threatened.
That got him to retract his hand and she sighed in relief. Was he trying to let everyone know who he really was?
She shot him a warning look and closed in on King Rian to inspect his neck. He still looked dizzy so she tilted his head to check. Luckily, Dairon had not left behind any wounds.
“Don’t worry about him. Everything will go back to normal when I reverse time.” He promised. Before she could say anything about it, they were back at the entrance where they had shown up a few minutes ago.
She looked into King Rian’s eyes, trying to find any sign that he knew what was going on. When he was certain that only she and Dairon knew, she straightened up as relief filled her heart.
King Rian looked at the two of them before doling out instructions.
“It was reported to me that some curious deities thought it was fun to discreetly try to go to the underworld to explore it.”
Jasmine peeked at him and watched as his gaze settled on Dairon for longer than necessary. It was almost as if he was trying to signify something with his eyes.
“Dairon, I will leave it up to you to find out what’s so interesting about the underworld that made them curious, and what Ulke has to say about it.”
Dairon crossed his arms. “What makes you think I have the right to interrogate Ulke?”
King Rian looked like he would have murdered Dairon ages ago if he had a choice. “You think you have the right to interrogate me. Why can’t you do the same for Ulke? Are the two of you from the same clan or something?”
It was a sarcastic comment but it made Jasmine’s heart race as her whole body trembled. What was he getting at?
Dairon remained nonchalant. “I am not going to stoop so low as to ask Ulke anything. Sure, I can find out whatever the little gods are up to but you can do the part that involves Ulke on your own.”
King Rian was displeased about his dismissive attitude but no matter how enraged he was, he kept it in.
Jasmine wanted to ask about it secretly but was interrupted when King Rian spoke to her.
“Scarlet needs help with the young goddesses. I need you to be her temporary assistant until another trainer is recruited.” He instructed her.
It was happening. She chewed the inside of her lip and cursed inwardly. He was pushing her to Scarlet for a reason and it probably had a lot to do with his goal.
“I’m sorry, what? You want me to be a babysitter?” She laughed sarcastically, hoping to piss him into kicking her out.
He was infuriated. “That’s what humans would probably call it, yes. But we are not humans. It’s your honor to be able to take care of a goddess so don’t mess it up.”
“I see. A newborn goddess has more value than a demigoddess, according to the immortal realm logic.” She exaggerated. “Then why don’t you choose one of those babies as your apprentice?”
“Get out of my sight.” King Rian lost it.
“Gladly.” She took Dairon’s hand and pulled him away with her.
“That didn’t go well.” He seemed to have expected it because he was not in the slightest bit surprised.
“I know all he wants is to use me but that doesn’t mean I will let him.”
When they were away from the guards, she expressed her uncertainty. “Are you sure he doesn’t know who you are?”
“Why would you think he knows?” He looked unfazed.
As soon as they were alone, he held her and tried to kiss her neck.
“The way he spoke of it. It was as if he knew the truth and was trying to push it out of us. What nonsense did he mean by saying that I was unlucky and I needed to marry a demon to make all demons die?” Her mouth widened in shock when she thought of a possibility. “Is he going to marry me off to Ulke?”
When she recalled that Catalyah had been betrothed to be forcefully married to Ulke, she was even more worried about it. “Ulke will not forcefully turn me into his mate, will he?”
“I will kill him if he dares to attempt such crap.” He threatened.
Jasmine raised an eyebrow slightly. What was the feud between Ulke and Dairon? Was it really only because he tried to make Catalyah his mate?
She wrapped her arms around his waist. “I should get to the academy soon. King Rian will probably find a more plausible excuse to get me closer to Scarlet if he doesn’t force me to babysit the little goddesses.” She sighed onto his chest. She knew that the more she resisted, the harder her mission would be if he was finally able to force her.
“How about you take care of the goddesses? You can use it to buy time. It won’t be long before I strike him.” He promised.
She thought about it and nodded. “Okay. But only because you said that I should.” She was stubborn.
He chuckled at her tone and let go of her. “You should get to the academy for your training with Sinos. I need to find out what the little gods have in mind. I will probably put them to sleep once I find out.”
She was slightly confused. Were they really little gods? King Rian had made it sound like the fugitive gods were much older than Xarz but Dairon was speaking of them as though they were newborns. It took a moment for her to realize that he was trying to diminish them. Just how much did he despise gods?
He was ready to leave for the underworld so she pulled away from him. He turned into his demon form and flapped his wings slightly. No matter how many times she saw him do that, she would never get used to it. It took her breath away every time.
She circled him intending to touch a feather only to be stopped by him. “Sinos might realize that you were in the presence of a demon. You will never be able to hear the last of his questions.”
“You are to blame for being too handsome.” She gave him a longing look and reluctantly watched him prepare to leave.
“I’ll take you for a ride this evening.” He promised.
“A ride?”
“Don’t you want to know what it feels like to fly?” He leaned in to whisper.
Of course she did! How did he know what she had always been curious about? Flying with Phoenix was different. She wanted to actually fly with her own wings. Unfortunately, she had already lost hers in her past life.
“I’m looking forward to it.” She blew him a kiss. He teleported into the underworld, leaving behind a few black feathers. Although she so badly wanted to touch them, it was a bummer that she couldn’t.
“At least I can control air.” She glanced at her hands and made the feathers levitate before leading them to her closet. They would be safe there. To make sure no one entered her room and found them in her closet, she made sure it would not open.
…
Sinos was waiting for her when she arrived.
“Hey Sinos.” She smiled brightly. She had not brought a bribe this time but she hoped he was no longer mad at her.
“I don’t know you.” He huffed in displeasure.
The corners of her lips twitched. He sounded like Dahlia did when she was mad at her and throwing a tantrum. “Is everything alright?”
“Why don’t you tell me that?” His jaw ticked and he avoided her gaze. He was fuming in anger. “What are you up to?”
“What are you talking about?” Her heart took off, beating wildly.
