Reborn As The Daemon’s Wife - Chapter 148
“Look who decided to pay a visit.” King Rian didn’t look very surprised about Ulke’s arrival. If he was shocked, then he sure knew how to hide it.
Ulke looked at him disdainfully and closed in on Jasmine. “If I didn’t come, how would I know that you were about to hit my first mate?” He raised his hand to rub her face. “My dear Catalyah, how could you let him lay a finger on you?”
She evaded his touch. “I’m not Catalyah.” She wanted to thank him for blocking the slap for her nonetheless but she had learnt from Dairon that the worst thing one could do was thank a demon. Unless they were looking to be manipulated, it was safe to pretend that the demon didn’t do any favors.
Ulke found her words amusing. “If you are not Catalyah, who are you?”
“Her doppelganger..” She smoothly evaded his question. Ulke and Dairon had a grudge and telling him that she was Dairon’s mate might put her and him in danger.
Ulke studied her for a long time and didn’t seem convinced in the slightest. Seeming like there was nothing he could do about his doubt but accept whatever crap she claimed to be the truth, he ignored her and turned to King Rian.
“When will you be ready to talk about what you have been doing to the little demons?” He demanded.
So they had a bone to chew. Since that was the case, she made a smooth escape out of the room. If King Rian’s plan was to marry her off to Ulke, it would be tragic if she let Ulke get close to her. Bardumond had told her that he forcefully made Catalyah his mate by biting her. She didn’t want to be the second victim.
But if she thought she had successfully escaped him, she had something else coming.
King Rian must have already relieved Sinos of his duty as her trainer so she didn’t see him when she went to the academy. She was disappointed but since there wasn’t anything she could do about it yet, she summoned Phoenix so she could go for a ride.
“He doesn’t listen to anyone but Catalyah.” Ulke appeared beside her as she prepared to hop onto Phoenix’s back.
She was shocked by his sudden appearance but feigned nonchalance as she rubbed Phoenix’s neck. “That’s just because no one else had been able to tame him. If you tame him into acknowledging you as his master, he will obey you as well.
Phoenix didn’t seem comfortable around Ulke either but this time it was not fear. Perhaps he just didn’t like demons so Jasmine didn’t intend to let Ulke stay for too long.
“I can’t believe that you are alive. Your soul was accidentally banished to the human realm.” He sounded like he was having way too much fun. “I thought that even if you were to be reborn, you would become a cat or something.”
She shot her eyes at him. The human realm? So that was where Catalyah’s soul was!
She needed more information while he was still under the impression that she was Catalyah so she asked, “Why were you certain that my soul was banished to the human realm?”
He was not sure whether that was her way of acknowledging her identity but he answered her nonetheless. “Your sister was such a scaredy cat. As soon as she saw my reflection through the crystal ball, she dropped it and it rolled into the tunnel leading to the human realm.” He laughed in triumph like it was something to be proud about. “I refused to tell your former mate where your soul disappeared to no matter how many times he begged me.”
He was a sadist, and Jasmine didn’t want to be near him for a second longer.
“I am really not Catalyah.” She broke the news remorselessly. “I will never be her but guess who you just told the truth about the end of Catalyah?” She hopped onto Phoenix.
He scoffed at her before she could fly off. “Are you going to tell Dairon that his mate’s soul can be found? Will you help him get her back?”
She pursed her lips.
“You love him. I can see it in your eyes.” Ulke made fun of her.
“That’s none of your business.” She snapped.
“Oh, it is.” He was enjoying this. His fangs even showed up when he laughed. “Are you going to help the scumbag you love get his mate back? What about you? Will you cry and settle for the second option?”
She glared at him.
“I only have Narilia, my queen. If you ditch that half demigod, I can treat you as well as I treat her.” He promised.
Demons had a weakness for women and were full of lies. Noticing his fangs that were exactly as Bardumond described, she patted Phoenix. “Let’s go.”
…..
It was one thing to ignore a demon’s annoying rant because he was talking about her giving her mate to someone else, but ignoring Catalyah was a different story altogether. She couldn’t get the deceased goddess out of her mind no matter how hard she tried.
Dairon finally took notice of her mood at dinner.
“What’s wrong?” He asked and pointed at her plate. “Does the food taste horrible?”
“It’s delicious.” She forced a smile and ate a few mouthfuls.
“Don’t give me that.” He knew that whatever she had in mind must be important if it got her into such a mood.
She placed her cutlery on her plate. “It’s really alright.”
She had been on the verge of talking about it but she stopped herself. What would his reaction be if he found out? Would he get Catalyah back to life? He certainly could as long as he got her soul into his possession.
Why did this have to happen as soon as they made a promise to each other?
It would have been different if she was certain that Dairon’s feelings towards her would not change no matter what happened. But this was Catalyah they were talking about. She was his first mate and he still loved her. The result might not even be what he anticipated.
“I’m not hungry.” She lied and stood to leave.
Dairon didn’t do anything to stop her, guessing that she must be upset because King Rian forced away the only trainer she had ever wanted to accept.
She slumped onto the bed with her eyes closed as soon as she got to her room. She didn’t even bother to take off her shoes.
She frowned in pain and opened her eyes after just a few minutes. All she could see when she closed her eyes was images of Catalyah and Dairon snuggled up against each other. Would he kiss Catalyah the same way he kissed her? Would he love her the same way?
She knew that it was not impossible for demons to have two wives but it still made her feel sick. Although she did not mind his relationship with Catalyah in the past, she did now that he was already hers. She did not want to give him away.
But keeping such information to herself was so selfish. She felt guilty but if the only way to get rid of her guilt was to pave way for another female to return into the life of her mate, then she would rather be guilty for the rest of her life.
A knock resounded on the door of her room. She knew that it was Dairon even without having to check. She didn’t want to talk to him right now because she might just blurt out everything she knew once she saw his face. So she pulled the covers over her face and pretended to be asleep.
The door opened gently and Dairon walked in. One look and he was certain that she was merely pretending to be asleep. He did not immediately expose her. He kissed her temples and knelt down to take off her shoes.
He pulled them off her feet one at a time, massaging each foot and kissing it gently.
“I don’t know why you are upset, flower.” He kissed her hand. “But if there is anything I can do to make you feel better, I will do anything for you.”
That was all it took for her to drop her pretense. She pushed the covers away and threw herself into his arms with her face plastered against his chest. He held her and frowned slightly. “What happened?”
Her eyes teared as she made the most selfish decision she had ever imagined herself making. “I don’t want to lose you, Dairon.”
“You are not losing me. It’s never going to happen.” He reassured her even without asking why she thought she might lose him.
‘Liar. Will you say the same if I told you what I know?’ She thought but didn’t say a word of it. She pulled away slightly and looked him in the eye so she would know how serious she was. “Let’s get married, Dairon.”
“We agreed to do that.” He was slightly confused.
She shook her head. “Not as humans. Let’s marry as demideities and include all the laws of marriage in the immortal realm.”
