Reborn As The Daemon’s Wife - Chapter 149
Dairon’s frown deepened.
“Why would you want that?”
She looked saddened by his question and he panicked. He sat down next to her and held her shoulders. “I don’t mean that I’m going to reject your idea but why did you change your mind?”
She must have been under some compelling spell of sorts because she was unable to lie to him. “The realm of immortals does not allow anyone to marry twice.” She blurted out the truth.
He burst into laughter and stopped when he realized that he was the only one who found it funny. “Wait. You are serious.”
She stared at him blankly..
“What difference does it make whether we marry as humans or demi deities?” He asked. He was certain that whether or not he was allowed to have relationships with other women, he would not want to be with anyone aside from her.
He couldn’t comprehend her thought process. For some reason, she seemed convinced that he might want to marry another female later.
He kissed the side of her face. “I need you to know that I don’t think it makes any difference for us. But if it makes you feel at ease, we will get married as demi deities.”
She wrapped her arms around him. “Thank you.”
He rubbed her back. “Is there anything else you would like to change?”
“Nothing, but we should let my parents know about our plans.” She was a little more jovial now that she had received the reassurance she needed.
“We can drop by the human realm tomorrow.” He suggested.
She knew that it would rile King Rian up since he had only allowed them to go out of anger but that didn’t matter much. She couldn’t possibly get married without at least letting her family know. Even if they would not be allowed to attend her wedding because it would be an immortal realm wedding, it was only fair to let them know.
When she thought of the possibility of her family being denied the chance to attend her wedding, she shut her eyes.
“Do you think King Rian will let me invite my parents?” She asked although the answer was already certain.
“He wouldn’t.” He confirmed her fears. “But that’s alright. You have Blaze and Lolanthe as ready substitutes. I’m sure they will be glad to walk you down the aisle in Sophie and Harry’s place.”
“But that’s…” She realized that he had deliberately said it to make her realize what she was indirectly doing. “But we can talk to King Rian. I’m sure he can agree if we convince him.” She said with little confidence. Even she didn’t believe her own words.
“There is a reason why you suddenly want an immortal realm wedding. You didn’t think through the options before making the decision, did you?”
She hated to have been busted so fast but she was still unwilling to tell him the whole truth.
“I thought it was a better idea.” She lied.
“We are not in a rush for anything, flower. We can take our time thinking about it.” He suggested.
She nodded. “Okay.”
“Meanwhile, we can pay a visit to the human realm and tell them about our engagement.” He knew that she was probably too distressed to think about it so he suggested it.
She couldn’t wait to see her family again.
That night, they once again slept in his room. She pulled the covers over herself and instead of moving to the farthest part of the bed like she usually did, she snuggled onto him.
She was insecure. He had taken note of her actions and was certain that she was afraid of losing someone—him—and he couldn’t even understand why she had such a thing in mind. If only he knew the root of her insecurity. That way, he would have put her at ease.
“Go to sleep, flower.” He traced his finger along the side of her face in an attempt to lull her. She used his arm as her pillow and closed her eyes, falling asleep faster than she had thought she would.
…
“Where is this place?” She asked aloud. There was no one else but her. It looked like the Proconian Isles but she had seen an illusion of it before so it could as well be fake. She looked around for signs of life and when she saw the castle outside which she had retrieved her scepter, she was relieved.
So she really was on the Proconian Isles. That was great, because she had been curious about the mansion the last time.
Since she was here without intending to teleport, it must be a sign that she was allowed to check the castle out.
She ran towards it and stopped at the large metallic gate which was locked. How was one supposed to access it? She checked for a pass lock and found an enchanted scroll the size of her palm, with a quill beside it. Was that meant to unlock the gate? How was she supposed to know what to write on it?
She tried writing her name in the language of the gods. While the gate didn’t open, a question popped up in the language of gods.
“At least that’s something.” She breathed out and read the riddle. “When the moon dwelt in the mountains, the person she treasured the most.”
She almost did a happy dance on the spot. She was good with those.
She had learnt that Narilia had earned the nickname “the moon” after going to the underworld. She didn’t comprehend the source but that was not why she was here.
“When Narilia dwelt in the mountains… that’s when she lived with her family in Lord Blaze’s castle in the Srovian Mountains.” She solved it out aloud. “Who did she love most? That’s easy. Bardumond.”
She wrote the name on the scroll but to her surprise, the answer was wrong. Her parents and grandfather didn’t treat her the same way they treated her sister so they were automatically out of question. The only other possibility was a name she didn’t want to say, let alone write. She swallowed the bitter pill and forced her fingers to grip the quill and write Catalyah. The gates slid open.
“Everything is about her. It’s always Catalyah.” She groaned, hating how jealous she sounded.
The castle was a ten minute walk from the gates but she completed it in two because of how fast she was lately. The doors were locked with another pass code and this time, she had to answer more questions. None of them were about Catalyah, much to her relief.
The doors opened to a castle larger than King Rian’s. It looked smaller on the outside than it actually was on the inside. She looked around, slightly spooked but put one foot in front of the other and decided to feed her curiosity.
The place looked familiar. She didn’t know where to look first. As if on cue, a glow of light shone in the left. Taking that as a guide for where to go, she ran towards it.
Her excitement died down when she saw it clearly. Those golden wings that were said to radiate light off of them and light up when she wanted them to. She would never mistake them anywhere.
Their owner turned slowly and looked at her. “Jasmine.”
“Catalyah.” She muttered.
“Jasmine? Jasmine!”
She jolted out of her sleep and sat up. Dairon was shaking her shoulder.
“What’s wrong?” She asked sleepily.
He looked relieved. “You were having a nightmare. You looked scared.” He felt her forehead.
She pulled his hand off her forehead that she hadn’t realized was full of sweat. So it was all a dream. Did she say anything she shouldn’t?
“Is everything okay?” He asked. She nodded lightly and wanted to continue sleeping. He slid off the bed and disappeared into the bathroom, returning with a wet towel which he used to wipe down her forehead.
She looked up at him while trying to read his mind. She couldn’t get anything but she was certain that if she had screamed Catalyah’s name out aloud, he wouldn’t be expressionless.
She calmed herself and let out a breath.
He returned the towel to the bathroom and when he climbed back onto the bed, he held her in his arms. “Do you want to talk about it?”
She thought about it and shook her head. It was better not to. She had only dreamt of Catalyah because she had thought about her since she met Ulke. If she admitted that she had a nightmare about her, he might want to try reading her mind. Lying wasn’t an option either.
Luckily, he understood her need to keep it to herself and didn’t press about it. She rolled onto her side and tried to fall asleep. She had barely closed her eyes when she heard her name. “Jasmine.”
