Chapter 19 – I want it big

I had gotten so captivated by the black bow that whatever Benjamin was saying went into one ear and out the next.
The bow’s weight felt good in my grasp, and so I held it in one hand and pulled it up. Then, I tested it by pulling the bowstring.
At once, I was determined to buy this. I didn’t even need to look at any other bow.
So, I turned my head back towards Dad and was about to say this, but Dad and Benjamin were both looking at me weirdly.
No, to be more precise, they were looking at me with a flabbergasted look and a dumbstruck look, respectively.
In response though, I gave them a puzzled expression, but soon curled up the corners of my lips slightly as I said to Dad.
“Dad, buy me this one please.”
“Of course. Do you want to pick one more?”
His voice was full of satisfaction. I’m sure that Dad is also happy to give me a present. So, I didn’t decline the chance and immediately pointed towards a dagger that caught my eye.
“This blade’s a little different than a normal sword. And it’s not the kind that’s usually wielded against monsters.”
As he saw the blade that I had chosen, Benjamin explained. Still though, I was glad to see a katar dagger on the wall.
I wasn’t the type to use concealed weapons. Of course, this wasn’t because it was a choice.
In the past, I used to pick up and use any of my dead comrades’ weapons. And while dealing with monsters, I’d usually lose weapons along the way, too, because they’d get stuck in the skin of the monsters.
As a result, I eventually gained a certain level of proficiency for any weapon I could get my hands on. I got ahold of a katar by chance before, and I used it for a long time after that.
Seriously, it was a weapon that was practically welded on my hand before.
A katar was more suited to stabbing attacks rather than slashes. This one was about the length of a dagger and the width of a sword blade, and on both sides of the grip were two parallel yellow bars.
With two katars in both hands, the smaller monsters could be easily eliminated as their vitals would be stabbed.
“This weapon is especially designed for assassination. It’s not bulky, and I think that’s why it caught your attention, but maybe this dagger would be easier for you to use.”
The dagger that Benjamin chose for me also stood out to me.
It was about the size of a palm and a half, and it had a rugged design and didn’t have any intricate carvings. Still, the blade was very sharp.
I thought he’d pick out a pretty one for me, so I was a bit surprised.
Setting down the bow for a moment, I took the dagger and turned it lightly in my grip.
Not noticing how Dad and Benjamin’s mouths had become like clams as they shut them closed, I focused on testing both the dagger and the katar continuously.
A cut and a stab with the dagger. Then, with a snap of my wrist, the dagger was flung to the opposite wooden wall.
In my previous world, there was one such monster whose weakness was its forehead, so flicking a dagger like this became a habit of mine since that monster could be easily dealt with just a single dagger.
The katar, on the other hand, was a little big for my hand, but I had no problem holding it and bringing it down to a slash.
Honestly, I could feel a small tingle at the tips of my fingers because it’s the first time in the longest time that I was holding a weapon in my hands.
I mean, one of my first memories in my past life was holding a branch with a vice grip as a weapon in order to survive, so any weapon at all felt like an extension of my body.
After a short while of testing, I then set down the katar. Then, Benjamin walked up to my side.
“Please hold it for a moment more.”
Since he said so, I held the katar again.
Benjamin went to get a measuring tape and started to measure my hands and arms, and also the gaping space between my hand and the katar. After this, he took a step back.
“I will make another katar and send it to you, Young Miss. This one isn’t suited for your hands.”
“…How about that?”
Dad hadn’t said anything the entire time I was testing out the weapons, but he soon asked me quietly.
“Will you still try to pick up the bow? The weapons in this smithy are all generally made for the garrison. Rin, you already know that there’s a height requirement for the members of the guard, so it might still be too big for you to wield.”
“The bow is fine, Dad. I want it big.”
The katar was an auxiliary weapon for emergency cases, so it’s better if it’s fitted more to my hand.
However, the bow was different. This bow would be my main weapon for monster subjugation.
“Hoho, maybe it’s because you’ve grown up with only this Dad of yours and David by your side…”
“It seems like the Young Miss has a penchant for big things. Milord, when it’s time for the Young Miss to choose a spouse later, he should be a son-in-law who’s as reliable as you.”
“Well. There’s no need to be in a hurry…”
“Haha, I fully understand how you feel, Milord.”
“Didn’t you marry off your daughter late, too?”
“Of course, Milord, there’s no other way.”
Leaving them to their conversation, I looked around at the other weapons.
Sure enough, it’s just as Dad said. Most of the weapons here were all big as well.
They were large, even for fully grown men, but I could feel greed rearing its head.
It was a type of greed that was making me think, oh, it might not be bad to learn swordsmanship even now.
I might be able to learn from Dad or Brother…
But the problem was that I would have to ask permission from Mom first, not those two people.
Ever since I was caught in the fire accident when I was young, Mom continued to be very overprotective of me.
She coddled me even more since I was a daughter, and since the mother took precedence with a daughter’s education, Dad couldn’t win against her when it came to this.
She loves me that much, of course.
