Reincarnated As God - Chapter 21 Herb Gathering
After half an hour of walking, Ye Jin stopped and indicated that they reached their destination.
“We’re here. The gathering spots aren’t really specific areas, but you can tell if a certain region has more herbs than other ones.” while talking, Ye Jin walked a few meters away and pointed at a few stalks of grass.
“This is a herb called Horsetail Grass, it grows near fallen trees. Five stalks of it are worth one copper coin. This patch here has about… fifty stalks, so that’s ten copper coins already!” Ye Jin pointed at the unassuming grass and explained. He carefully picked the stalks of grass, taking care to cut them as low as he could reach. Meng Li helped to cut them, carefully cutting them as low as he could and trying not to damage them. In the end, all of the stalks he gathered were in perfect condition due to his perfect control over his body, while Ye Jin stumbled and damaged a few of the stalks.
“Wow brother, you have talent. I can tell you will be able to do this better than I do.” Ye Jin complimented.
Meng Li tried to give Ye Jin the stalks he gathered since Ye Jin was the one who spotted the patch, but Ye Jin denied and told him to keep the ones he cut himself. Meng Li was quite conflicted, since he had no need for money, while Ye Jin was the only person supporting two people, which was going to turn into three soon enough. However, under Ye Jin’s insistence, he had to take them. At that moment, Meng Li’s appreciation for Ye Jin grew. Before, he found them only because of the reincarnator, but now, with how Ye Jin treated him, he started considering him a real friend. It was a good feeling, a new one for Meng Li – he was a loner on earth.
After gathering the Horsetail Grass, Ye Jin led Meng Li further into the gathering zone. The place Ye Jin found was actually a cliff full of herbs. According to Ye Jin, all kinds of rare herbs could be found there, and along the way, he even told Meng Li in a hushed voice that he oversaw an immortal herb at the top of the cliff – unfortunately, it was in a place he couldn’t reach, so he had no choice but to abandon it. And later, when he returned to the spot, he realised that it was empty – the flower he saw previously was gone. He went into detail describing the flower. It was an orchid with seven white petals and one grey petal, for a total of eight. There was a faint mist around it, and from his point of view, the orchid was absorbing the light in the surroundings, making the place around it darker. According to Ye Jin’s story, he was climbing the cliff in broad daylight and the area around the orchid looked as though it was the middle of the night, while the orchid itself radiated a light so pure he had to close his eyes.

As Ye Jin was talking, Meng Li couldn’t help but be surprised. He didn’t know much about spiritual herbs, but he didn’t think such a strange plant could even exist. Absorbing sunlight from its’ surroundings? It sounded magical, so Meng Li asked the system.
[Yes. It’s the Nine Petal Demonic Orchid, but the one described by Ye Jin seems to be incomplete. This spiritual plant is very rare, and it’s a treasure of the Origin Core Realm. It grows by feeding on corpses – it needs countless corpses to mature. As it matures, it can’t be exposed to sunlight or it will stop maturing and instead start absorbing sunlight to turn it’s previously white petals black. When all the petals are black, it’s ready. It’s an Extreme Yin ingredient, and it’s used for many pills for Origin Core Cultivators, but it can be consumed without being refined to provide an enormous boost for cultivators who have a Yin-type cultivation method. Overall, it’s impossible for it to appear naturally in a region exposed to sunlight, so it’s practically certain that someone has planted it here to have it mature.]
The description the system provided for the orchid was interesting to Meng Li – after all, such a strange plant was not something he could come up with by himself. It was a treasure which could only be created by nature. Thinking of it, Meng Li couldn’t help but sigh in amazement.
Ye Jin noticed his sigh and asked him quickly.
“What, do you think I’m lying? I, Ye Jin, never lie! Remember it, Brother! I saw that orchid there, I’m certain!” Ye Jin needed to reaffirm his words. He thought Meng Li’s sigh was aimed at him.
“Brother Ye, I’m not calling you a liar, I just sighed because even if such a miraculous flower did exist there, we have no chance to acquire it…” Meng Li quickly came up with an excuse. Ye Jin’s heroic figure seemed to deflate at that moment.
“Sigh… Yes, you’re right. Even if it still was where I saw it, I could hardly even look at it, so how would I be able to take it away?” Ye Jin mourned. He had to support an entire family by himself, and yet even when such a treasure was placed in front of him, he could only watch and not take it. It was quite depressing.
“Brother Ye, don’t worry, if we see it again then we’ll definitely take it!” Meng Li wanted to cheer Ye Jin up. Although it didn’t manage to dispel his bad mood, it did at least cheer him up slightly.
After a few minutes of walking, Meng Li could faintly see an enormous cliff before him. It was a few hundred meters tall, and with his sight, Meng Li could see dozens of small plants scattered across the cliff face. Most of them were normal herbs with no qi, but some of them contained Qi. There were even herbs that had Qi which would be useful to a Qi Sea realm cultivator scattered there, but most of them were deeply hidden in inaccessible spots.
It was strange that such a huge amount of herbs grew on a single cliff face, but as he got even closer, Meng Li received some answer. The Qi in the area was much thicker than normal – he estimated that cultivation would be at least twice as effective here as it was in the city. However, the reason for the big amount of Qi was still baffling him.
<system, why=”” is=”” qi=”” increased=”” here?=””>
[It’s because Spiritual Veins are crossing here. Spiritual Veins are veins which distribute Qi across the world. If the Qi in the world can be compared to a pool of water, the Spiritual Veins are like hoses with little holes with them which spill out Qi. When they cross, a bigger amount of Qi is released. The amount of Qi in an area is mainly decided by the density of Spiritual Veins in an area. For example, the small island near the south pole has about twice the density of Spiritual Veins, which is increased the closer to the middle of the island it is. In fact, the huge mountain on that island in the only point in the world where all of the Spiritual Veins intersect – the density of Qi there is enough to crush Qi Gathering Cultivators to death.]
Meng Li was once again surprised by the new knowledge the system just dropped on his head, but one answer created questions – for one, where does all the Qi come from? Thus, he asked the system.
[The Qi comes from outer space. Planets are like natural giant formations which attract Qi and distribute it with the Spiritual Veins. That’s the reason why the concentration of Qi in outer space is extremely low.]
This was like another bombshell of knowledge dropped on Meng Li’s head. It wasn’t exactly hard to understand, but the scale of things was the reason he was surprised. Planets were naturally attracting Qi? Natural formations? Meng Li could feel a headache incoming, so he stopped thinking about it and returned to earth.
The conversation with the system took less than a second in total, so Ye Jin didn’t realise that he spaced out. In fact, he was distracted too – he noticed another herb near their path. Meng Li hurried over to help. The herb was worth about six copper coins in total, and they split it evenly in half. Then, they continued on their journey.
At the speed they were travelling, Meng Li estimated that it would take them about half an hour to get to the cliff face without any breaks. In the end, with frequent stops to gather herbs, it took over an hour. However, Meng Li’s basket was filled with herbs to a point where he couldn’t see the bottom – it wasn’t by any means full, but it was worth about thirty copper coins. Meng Li estimated that the daily expenses were just a bit more than one silver coin for Ye Jin’s family and it would only grow when the reincarnator was finally born. While thinking about the reincarnated soul, Meng Li couldn’t help but notice that he didn’t have any way of addressing it at the moment. He would need to ask Ye Jin what he planned to name the child. But he would have to do it later, as he was standing at the bottom of the cliff face right now and he couldn’t afford to distract Ye Jin.
“Are you ready, brother?” Ye Jin looked at Meng Li with a big smile. He was planning to start scaling the cliff face and wanted to witness the look of fear on Meng Li’s face. To his disappointment, Meng Li’s face didn’t change.
“Yes, I am.” Meng Li answered with a slight smile. After all, even if he fell off, he could fly, so he didn’t have anything to worry about. However, the same couldn’t be said for Ye Jin, so Meng Li was quite worried for his new brother.
“Then let’s go. I can see some herbs there, and the path seems to be quite easy. You should start by picking them.” Ye Jin pointed at the cliff face. The place he was pointing at was a small crevice, in which grew a small bush. The bush had small, red berries hanging from the branches – in total about twenty.
“That’s called the Flame Devil’s Fruit. It’s extremely spicy, but not poisonous. Two fruits go for one copper, so it’s pretty good.” Ye Jin explained.
The crevice the bush was in was about seven meters off the ground, and there was an easy path leading towards it, as Ye Jin pointed out. Meng Li climbed it with ease, and lodged himself in the crevice with his back against one of the walls and his feet on the other wall. He picked the small fruits off the bush – they were only slightly larger than a soybean and quite mushy. He accidentally squished one, and the liquid that came out slightly pricked his finger. He tasted it, and it was extremely spicy – only a bit milder than a ghost pepper. He tried one by accident on earth. As he recalled it, he experienced a wave of emotions. He was still new to the life with the system, but it was better than his old life. Meng Li couldn’t help but sigh at the memories.
After awakening from the wave of emotions, Meng Li quickly picked the rest of the berries and quickly descended. He left the herb basket on the ground – Ye Jin convinced him to do so to gain experience first. In total, there were about thirty berries. He didn’t notice all of them from the ground because they were hidden behind the leaves. Meng Li simply dropped them in his basket and scanned the cliff wall for another herb he could gather – a not dangerous one. Ye Jin would probably freak out if he tried to climb high. Thinking of Ye Jin, Meng Li glanced at the cliff wall. Ye Jin was currently about twenty meters high up, cutting off leaves of a strange plant. His herb basket was on his back – as he cut the leaves, he expertly threw all of them in the basket.
Meng Li once again turned his attention to gathering herbs. He decided that he wasn’t gathering them for money, but for experience – first, to be familiar with herbs, to lay a solid foundation for pill making. It was a solid plan.
