Reincarnated As God - Chapter 41 Cultivation Of The Soul
After a few hours of uncomfortable sleep, Meng Li was woken up with a groan when he felt someone shake his shoulder. During his sleep, he changed his position many times, but it didn’t help – the wooden floor seemed to have impossibly many bumps which dug into his back, his side, anything that touched the floor. Despite sleeping, it wasn’t a comfortable sleep in the least.
Meng Li stretched his sore muscles and looked behind him. The entrance to the cart, covered by cape, was behind his back, and stretching the sore muscles created even more pain for his incredibly sore muscles. It turned out that without the support of the pillars and without using his Qi, his muscles weren’t any different from a normal person. Well, he may be a bit stronger than a mortal due to the Qi leaking into his flesh, but he still suffered from an uncomfortable bed.
Due to the short time he spent sleeping and his sore muscles, Meng Li had a frown. He was in a bad mood, and ready to leash out on whoever disturbed his painful sleep. Upon turning around, however, he found that the one who woke him up was Ye Jian. Meng Li simply groaned once more and fell to the floor. His long hair was scattered around, and his robes were in a disorder – he looked like a mess.

“Sigh… Brother Meng, could you move? The caravan is returning to the road, we need a place to sit.” He said impatiently. Meng Li didn’t reply, but he lifted himself from the ground and sat on one of the boxes containing herbs. He proceeded to clean himself up, which was basically brushing his hair with thin strands of Qi and smoothing out his robes. While he was doing so, Ye Jian and his parents boarded the cart. They too chose a place to sit and sat down, cultivating. Ye Jian cultivated too – he was eager to break through to Qi Sea Realm, though he had a bit to go until the peak of the tenth layer. His parents didn’t slack off either – the talent the Green Immortal’s Peach gave them was enough to put them just below the geniuses of large clans, and their cultivation growth was extremely fast. They still didn’t use all of the Peach’s Qi, so they had to hurry and refine it before it dissipated.
Meng Li looked at them with some resentment. How could they have a comfortable bed while he didn’t?! However, he calmed down quickly and settled his anger. It stemmed mainly from the fact that he was uncomfortable, and he wanted to be angry at something. He couldn’t help but glare at everyone in the cart angrily while he healed his muscles with his Qi. However, he quickly restored his usual calm demeanor and thought a bit about the future.
He would go adventuring with Ye Jian, but there was a big problem at the moment – he needed to break through to the Origin Core Real, or at least his path’s equivalent of it. He had branched off from the normal path of Qi cultivation only recently, so there shouldn’t be any major changes. However, he had a guess about it, which was the reason he didn’t attempt to break through just yet. When he merged the pillars supporting his three Dantians into one, it gave him the ability to use both the power of his soul and his vitality. However, when he used those forces like he used Qi, it had detrimental effects on him – for example, when he used his soul power, he could feel himself growing weaker mentally, and felt as though he was going to faint.
The same applied to his Vitality – although he didn’t feel the effects due to the fact that he was young and had a lot of vitality to spare, if he used too much, it would reduce his lifespan. He already had a guess that the cultivation path of those two energies was different from cultivation of Qi – for example, cultivation of vitality might be strengthening of the body, and the soul was training his soul and using it to attack the souls of other people. However, he had absolutely no idea how to do so.
Although when he merged the pillars, the three energies were somehow balanced with each other, he had progressed in the cultivation of Qi from that point. Now, when he looked at the pillar in his lower Dantian, it shone with three different colours of light, but one shone the brightest. The colours were white, blue and green, and the white colour was the strongest, practically as strong as the other two combined. However, the pillar was still holding together – although the energies within it were unstable, it wasn’t yet at the point where the instability was so strong it would make the pillar break. Unfortunately, Meng Li had a feeling that if the balance was completely broken, the pillar would break too, and in the best case scenario, he would be back to the starting point – cultivating only his Qi, or in the worst case scenario, which Meng Li felt was the most likely, his cultivation would be crippled and he might die.
As such, Meng Li was very careful when it came to it. He didn’t cultivate at all to strengthen his cultivation – for now, he wanted to find a method of cultivating the other two powers, in preparation for breaking through. Meng Li had been putting it off for a long time, and although it wasn’t a pressing matter, it should be done sooner than later. As such, when sitting in the rocking cart, he decided that now was as good a time as any other to at least learn what he should do.
he asked.
[Vitality no. Soul power – yes. Soul power is cultivated by strengthening the soul. It’s a completely different path than Qi cultivation, but a cultivator can cultivate his soul as well as Qi. However, there aren’t paths set like in the cultivation of Qi, and thus, finding the correct path is hard. As such, cultivating the soul was always an unorthodox practice. There are, however, some manuals in the summoning tab pertaining to cultivation of the soul.] when the system replied, it also changed the summoning tab to show some manuals. There were few – less than twenty. As such, Meng Li took time to read all about them in their description before choosing.
There were many paths – they ranged from demonic, like using the souls of others to absorb soul power or using emotions to grow the soul, to more orthodox ones. Meng Li immediately removed the demonic ones which involved hurting other people. He was left with about a dozen, but all of those were viable methods.
Unfortunately, most of the manuals left detailed methods which had some significant downside, so Meng Li also gave up on those. He ended up choosing a manual which described soul cultivation up to a level of power equivalent to the Nascent Soul Realm – a soul strong enough to not disperse instantly when it left the body.
It was an orthodox method, or at least orthodox as far as soul cultivation went – in the Qi cultivation world, it was still an incredibly unorthodox art. It was balanced, and the method described could be reliably used to increase the strength of one’s soul without any downsides. The one bad thing about it was that it was slow, but Meng Li didn’t care. With ten times the lifespan of a normal cultivator, he wasn’t worried that he would fail – and he trusted his talent.
When he chose it, he summoned it, but didn’t immediately open it. He still wanted to know how he could cultivate Vitality.
<system, what=”” is=”” your=”” best=”” guess=”” for=”” cultivating=”” vitality?=””>he asked. After all, his cultivation realm was far too low to make guesses about things which were so incredibly important.
[Normally, vitality is increased with consequent breakthroughs. However, there is no reliable way of directly affecting the source of vitality and increasing its’ power, or at least master hasn’t left one behind.] the system replied.
<isn’t vitality=”” directly=”” related=”” to=”” someone’s=”” lifespan?=”” so=”” how=”” does=”” the=”” nameless=”” technique=”” increase=”” my=””>he asked, confused. However, the system’s reply made him extremely confused.
[What nameless technique?] the system asked. Although its’ voice was emotionless as usual, Meng Li knew that it wasn’t simply joking around. Thus, he retrieved the small booklet containing the nameless technique from his bag of holding.
he replied, confused. He started getting a weird feeling about the situation at hand, but he didn’t quite know what was the source of said feeling.
[I haven’t given you this booklet and neither have you summoned it. Hmm? I can’t read the contents.] the system replied, its’ emotionless voice actually breaking character and showing an emotion of surprise. Meng Li’s weird feeling grew stronger.
he replied. He had a guess about the system already, but he wasn’t one hundred percent sure about it…
[At the beginning, when you were a mortal and cultivating during the Qi Gathering Realm, to me, you simply cultivated until you reached the peak. There wasn’t any technique like this on you.] the system replied, its’ voice containing an emotion Meng Li couldn’t quite discern.
Meng Li asked. The answer would either confirm or deny his guess, so he eagerly awaited the system’s response.
[I… The one communicating with you is the spirit of the system. I can do practically everything, and the only one… Thing who can do something like this are the orders master has placed. As such, this booklet was given to you by master, and it’s probably not meant for me to see.] Meng Li could hear some hesitation in the system when it referred to itself as ‘I’. So the one he was talking to wasn’t an AI chatbot… Or it was just a really sophisticated AI chatbot who had control over the system, but couldn’t break some order left behind by his master.
he asked.
[I don’t have the authority to see them all, but the main one is that I can’t kill you or cripple you. However, such a thing can happen in the world. The other one are the tests master has placed – when you reach Nascent Soul, you will have to go down and cultivate from the ground up.] the system replied. Although to Meng Li, the information wasn’t much, he was still relieved that the system couldn’t do anything bad to him.
Returning to the booklet, Meng Li was quite confused. Why would master leave behind something so precious and not inform the system of it? And was there a possibility to use the booklet to cultivate Vitality?
Meng Li decided to leave the questions for later. He still had to cultivate his soul, and since the matter wasn’t so pressing, he wasn’t in a mood to play with his life – he would take care of this at a later date. With peace of mind, Meng Li placed the nameless technique booklet into his bag of holding and took the soul cultivation manual to read. It was simple, but hard at the same time. Or rather, the action he had to perform was simple, but the control required to do it was the hard part.
The manual described absorbing the remnant soul power of dispersed souls and purifying it by circulating it along a special path in the body, then leading it to the upper Dantian and letting his soul absorb it. After an hour, Meng Li was finally able to completely purify and refine his first strand and led it into his upper Dantian. Along the way, he discovered something – when the strand was completely purified and refined, he could leave it in his upper Dantian and it wouldn’t disperse! This meant that he could first accumulate a fair amount of soul power, then absorb it all at once. However, Meng Li was in a hurry to absorb that one strand and to check the effects.
To his surprise, the absorption process was extremely pleasant. He could feel his soul growing and his mind getting cleared, even though it was just a tiny amount, it was still pleasurable. However, Meng Li didn’t care, and quickly checked his lower Dantian to see the pillar. To his relief, although at first glance, it was the same, as he was immensely familiar with the pillar, he could sense that the blue glow grew imperceptibly – it worked!
Meng Li was happy, and he quickly returned to absorbing and refining more of the remnant soul power in his surroundings.
