- Volume 4: Chunin Exams Chapter 88 Interlude 9: Date
(A/N: Its finally happening boys)
Mizuki’s routine over the next week changed somewhat compared to his previous experience as a genin.
Now, his missions were not of such an innocent nature as they previously were, nor was he accompanied by his squadmates and Sensei.
Instead, he would form a cell with other chunin normally three or four people who happened to be available at the time in order to complete a variety of different, often much darker, missions.
The most senior chunin would be assigned to lead the team and as part of the new generation, Mizuki spent most of his travel time conversing with the more senior chunin.
Trying to learn about the types of missions being assigned, how to go about completing them, common newbie mistakes, and so forth.
After all, whilst Mizuki is easily strong enough to beat them all in a three on one, that didn’t mean that he automatically knew everything.
And picking up some tips and tricks from experienced chunin would not only allow him to gain knowledge, but it would also allow him to build connections and create goodwill among his comrades.
A course of action to which there were no disadvantages.
Over the course of the week, Mizuki had completed two missions, with one being C rank, and the other being a B rank mission.
The missions that dominated the village slowly moved away from the standard, as genin moved from finding cats stuck in trees to helping transport weapons, and chunin moved from taking missions to protect foreign daimyos far away to helping clear the bandits near home.
Mizuki was no exception to this rule, as the missions given to him were to help guard a caravan full of paper bombs which were due to one of Konoha’s outposts in one of the smaller nations.
After all, why fight battles across your own land when you can fight across others and not risk a thing?
However, the second, and more challenging of the two missions he was given was to track down an enemy spy within the outpost.
The mission itself was surprisingly easy, as the “spy” was hardly at Chunin level.
Mizuki simply had to have some shadow clones camp in restricted areas and wait for the spy to catch the bait.
Whilst this sort of task would normally be impossible for someone with relatively average chakra reserves like Mizuki, his ability to steal chakra allowed him to sustain the clones for long enough.
All in all, just what would later become an Average week for any chunin of the time, as all of the great nations prepared for war.
. . . . .
In the week that had passed since the exams ended, Anko was finally back on her feet as well.
A few days after the chunin exams ended, Mizuki came back from a mission only to find a surprise greeting him in the form of a homemade meal prepared by a certain purple-haired kunoichi.
Needless to say, the meal was absolutely delicious, and Mizuki was able to scarf back three servings of it.
Eventually, the night grew to a close and both of them went to bed.
As it was too late for Anko to head back home, Mizuki offered her the bed whilst he took the couch.
After all, she was the guest in this situation.
Mizuki awoke early the next morning, having been given an early summoning time to the mission tower in order to accept a new task.
Apparently, Anko had heard some of the hustle and bustle as Mizuki was preparing to leave.
One thing led to another, and soon enough Mizuki had to save the date for his next day off, in a few days, to go out with Anko.
A course of events to which Mizuki had no complaints.
With that out of the way, Anko gave Mizuki a kind smile as she sent him off to complete his mission.
. . . . . .
Those days went by in a flash, and just like that, the day of reckoning had arrived.
Mizuki arrived at her apartment around eleven, as they were planning on having the previously agreed upon ramen for dinner, and visiting Anko’s favorite Dango place for dessert.
Mizuki let loose a deep breath before leaning slightly forward and knocking on the door.
The door opened nearly instantaneously, with Anko quickly looking away upon realizing her blunder, wanting to pretend as if she hadn’t been waiting there for him.
Luckily for her though, Mizuki had at least some ability to read the room, and so, he simply pretended as if the event had never happened and skipped over it.
That didn’t mean that he would forget about it though.
Hardly.
He was merely saving up the good stuff to tease her with for later.
Mizuki looked over to see Anko, who was over exaggeratedly making her eyes rapidly flicker across her vision, trying to hide her obvious staring at Mizuki out of the corner of her eyes.
Again, not wanting to make her feel uncomfortable, Mizuki simply pretended as if he did not notice as the two of them continued walking towards Ichiraku.
Mizuki’s clothing was rather casual, with a simple dark green v-neck t-shirt with a pair of loose-fitting black pants.
Anko also wore relatively boyish clothing, as she had stated her distaste of dresses, as she hated their restrictiveness.
Soon, the two of them arrived for their lunch, however, there was something different compared to normal.
??: “Hewo, wit du u wan?”
Sitting on top of Teuchi’s shoulders, was his daughter Ayame, who was now just a bit over a year old.
Despite this, she started talking earlier than most, and could now speak near sentences.
Mizuki: “Hey Ayame, can I have …”
Placing his order, making sure to be patient with the little girl as she fumbled around, Mizuki couldn’t help but smile.
Teuchi: “Here’s your ramen, what you guys here for this time.”
Anko: “A date.”
Hearing those words, Teuchi spit out the water he was drinking before turning to them, a look of shock evident in his eyes.
Teuchi: “Its about time Mizuki, god damn, this stuff should have been obvious years ago”
Hearing his commentary, Mizuki innocently looked away.
Truth be told, it should have been something incredibly easy to recognize.
And he did.
He simply chose to avert his eyes from it.
After all, he was still struggling with the dilemma of him being mentally an a.d.u.l.t.
However, like several relics of his old world that he carried with him had before it, those ideas eventually collapsed into nothingness, as Mizuki became determined in his quest for happiness.
Mizuki and Anko both left Ichiraku nearly forty-five minutes later, full after consuming bowls upon bowls of ramen.
But that would not stop them.
it could not stop them.
For they had one more trial left.
Dango.
Whilst Mizuki stopped his after around three, Anko continued forward, devouring not just her own three orders, but the remainder of Mizuki’s as well.
The Dango stand also came and went, as Mizuki and Anko ended up relying on one another in order to get back home, as they felt the inevitable food coma incoming.
Eventually, they both reached Anko’s apartment.
Call him old fashioned, but Mizuki just thought it best to walk a girl home after a date.
Especially in a village like Konoha, where it was relatively convenient.
Anko: “Thanks for the date today Mizuki, I had a lot of fun”
Mizuki: “Same, wanna get together next weekend to do something similar, I’m hearing rumors of some restaurants potentially being forced to close due to the lack of trade.”
Mizuki: “I don’t know ’bout you, but I’m gonna eat all the delicious food I can now, just to sort of balance the scales.”
Anko giggled slightly hearing Mizuki’s comments.
Anko: “I would love to.”
Saying those words, she gave Mizuki a tight hug and a kiss on the cheek.
Anko: “See you around.”
Saying those words, she turned around to look at him one last time, an affectionate glow evident in her eyes, before turning back and walking into her apartment.
