Reincarnated As Mizuki - Volume 5
Although the group had one injured member, they were still able to make it back to Konoha in just under four days; the same amount of time that they took getting there.
This is mainly because the group took even less time for breaks, only stopping to take a thirty-minute nap every night, alongside the occasional stop to refill their water canteens, eat, and recharge their chakra.
All in all, the group spent twenty-three hours a day on average “on the road”, trying to get back to Konoha.
Fortunately for them, the Iwa nin were busy with securing the area and squashing pockets of resistance that had risen up when they had occupied the area.
This stroke of luck allowed for the Konoha ninja to slip away, with Iwa having no shinobi to spare chasing them down, as they wanted to establish a forward base.
Upon arriving back home, the group of three men quickly rushed to the Hokage’s office, with the sandaime interrupting his previous meeting and clearing the rest of his schedule for the morning to hear the report about the start of the war from the men who experienced it themselves.
Although, Mizuki did not achieve this meeting.
. . . POV Shift: Hokage’s Office . . .
Neko: “Lord Hokage, before we begin, may I ask a question?”
Hiruzen: “You may”
Neko: “What happened to the group that we sent back? Did they all-”
Hiruzen: “Worry not, they all returned to Konoha, some of them are being treated at the hospital currently, but we expect them to make a full recovery.”
Neko: *phew* “That takes a load off of my mind”
Hiruzen: “Indeed. Now, onto the contents of the meeting.”
Hiruzen: “I have read the series of reports that have been provided to me, and gathered the testimony of those who returned, however, yours would also be valuable.”
Hiruzen: “Any information at all can be valuable, formations and tactics used, common jutsu, notable opponents, the terrain, anything.”
Mizuki: “Lord Hokage?”
Hiruzen: “Yes Mizuki?”
Mizuki: “Apologies Lord Hokage, but may I give my testimony another time?”
Knowing that Mizuki would not ask if not for a good reason, Hiruzen proceeded with caution.
Hiruzen: “Naturally, provided you have a good reason”
Mizuki: “I have a literal hole in my chest. I patched it up best I could, but I’m probably gonna need to go into surgery.”
Hearing this a deathly silence permeated the room, before vanishing as quickly as it came with the sound of Hiruzen tactfully coughing.
Hiruzen: “No problem. We can discuss the details later.”
And, with that, Mizuki was excused to go to the Hospital
. . . POV Shift: Hospital . . .
Mizuki arrived at the hospital not ten minutes later, with its location luckily being relatively close to the Hokage’s office.
Thankfully, Mizuki knew most of the staff there from his time spent training there to learn medical ninjutsu, and so, was easily able to check himself in, and told to enter one of the diagnostic rooms to wait for the report.
And so, Mizuki sat himself down in the room he was told to go to, a fairly basic one located just down the hall.
After noting down the injury, what he believed the damage was, and what he did to treat his injuries, Mizuki could not help reminisce slightly about how the experience of waiting for a doctor never changes.
However, Mizuki did not reminisce for long, as his thought process was quickly interrupted by the opening of the door and the arrival of the doctor.
???: “Hey, I’m your doctor for today, Why don’t you just-”
Mizuki: “Oh, hey Rin! Been A whilst, huh? Congrats on becoming a full-fledged doctor”
Rin: “Hehe, thanks. The war has not fully picked up yet, so It was decided that it would be for the best if my skills did not go to waste.”
Hearing her statement, Mizuki winced slightly. After all, he knew better than anybody that was simply no longer true.
Seeing his wince, and knowing that he had just come back from a mission, Rin was able to deduce what had happened.
Rin: “How bad is it?”
Mizuki: “Iwa launched a surprise invasion of Kusa, we still have some fortifications in the south of the country, but most of it is occupied by Iwa now.”
Hearing the grave news, Rin couldn’t help but mutter under her breath slightly.
Mizuki: “In any case, onto happier news. How are things going with Obito”
The bright crimson blush on her face gave everything away, causing Mizuki to chuckle slightly.
Mizuki: “Anyways, I wrote some basic notes with all the information you will need for the surgery.”
Hearing his words, Rin snapped out of her gaze, before reading through the notes provided, shocked at what had occurred.
Nonetheless, she persisted, making observations after viewing the wound, before finally developing a strategy to operate.
All this in less than ten minutes.
Rin: “Alright, The operation itself will probably take just shy of an hour, but you will need to stay in the hospital for a couple of days afterward to monitor your condition.”
Mizuki: “Alright, although before I forget, can you by any chance pretend that my wounds aren’t that serious so that Anko doesn’t kill me.
*Silence*
Mizuki: “I’m more afraid of her reaction than I am the actual surgery.”
Rin chuckled slightly hearing this.
Rin: “You should be”
. . .
The surgery went all according to plan, with Mizuki now having a scar on his side that resembled the one which Jiraiya would have on his chest after facing four tailed Naruto.
Surely enough, in accordance with his predictions, Anko had come bursting into Mizuki’s room as soon as visits were allowed.
Although, she was much meeker than he thought she would be. Simply saying how she was happy he was ok, and how she had gotten worried about him once she heard about his injuries.
However, her demeanor completely changed as she was leaving for the night.
Anko: “Mizuki…If you die…I’m gonna kick your ass”
. . .
The next few days went by in a flash, with Mizuki bedridden, he first spent his time chatting with Anko, however, she was forced to leave for a mission, causing him to spend his time studying Fuinjutsu scrolls.
Orochimaru’s experiments were placed on a temporary hold with the coming news of the war.
No doubt, Orochimaru did not want to jeopardize his operation now of all times, with everybody more paranoid than ever.
Mizuki had also given his accounts to Hiruzen, describing the different jutsu he had seen Gari use and the elite jonin’s general fighting style.
However, like all peaceful times, Mizuki’s was cut to the end with a call to the mission office, effective immediately after he got out of the hospital.
Surely enough, all rested up and ready to go a couple of days later, Mizuki encountered a familiar face at the mission office.
Mizuki: “God damn, You’re looking as f.u.c.k.i.n.g horrible as ever, Neko”
Hearing his quip, Neko was quick to retaliate.
Neko: “I’m not a mirror”
Silently cursing his lack of an ability to come up with a comeback, and seeing Neko’s proud smirk, Mizuki relented.
Mizuki: “I walked right into that one, didn’t I?”
Neko: “You could not have buried yourself more if you tried”
Mizuki: “Anyways, I’m assuming that your gonna be doing another mission with me”
Neko: “Yup”
Mizuki: “Team captain again?”
Neko: “Yup”
Neko: “We can catch up more later, for now, we need to get briefed on our mission, and you also need to meet the third member of our team”
