- Volume 1 Chapter 10 Blows Whistle Traveling
Polter transmated Isaac back to the ship and they made the short trip over to the Traveler’s shard. Landing on the ground just a few hundred meters outside of the shards reach, Isaac took in the sight of this massive structure that was at least four hundred meters long at its base and nearly two hundred meters at its pointy tip that curved away from the base as the top became narrower. Unnatural clouds supporting lightning storms clung around the middle and top of the shard.
As Isaac moved closer towards the center of the shard’s base, he noticed that there were pieces of the shard had more damage than others. There were several spots, of whatever unknown substance the Traveler is made of perhaps simply condensed Light itself, that had been completely eliminated and a bright light radiated outwards through the cracks and holes left behind. He walked towards one of the larger ones and could feel the power of the Light more intensely with every step.
“This is unbelievable! The last time I was this close to the Light…it was definitely when I was born. Ever since that brilliant flash of Light that birthed me, I’ve never again felt the power of the Traveler so close, until now.” Polter reminisced.
“Well, I obviously never experienced anything that dramatic, even when I was resurrected, but nevertheless this is indeed an impressively powerful atmosphere. It’s hardly something I’m likely to forget, even should I never return. It truly is wondrous!
“Say, Polter, are you able to…I don’t know…like, speak to the Traveler or something. Seeing how close we are, surely you should be able to do something, right?”
“What…speak to the…I would never presume to speak with the Traveler. What are you even thinking?”
“What the hell? I just asked a simple question and what’s with this ‘I wouldn’t presume’ stuff? Is it against some kind of ghost code of conduct or something? What’s the big deal? Why are you freaking out like that?”
“Isaac, the Speaker is the one who speaks to the Traveler! Why are you asking me to go over his head? Also, the Traveler didn’t choose me as a separate Speaker did it? So, you should know very well what I mean by ‘I wouldn’t presume.’”
Isaac brought his thumb and forefinger up to massage the bridge of his nose, while releasing a deep sigh of exasperation. “Polter, once again, you’re being entirely too dramatic over some pretty simple stuff. First of all, this whole Speaker business is a bunch of nonsense. The Speaker doesn’t speak ‘with’ the Traveler. He himself even acknowledges that he speaks ‘for’ the Traveler. Have you ever heard him say that he speaks directly to the Traveler, even once?
“And second of all, where in the world did you ever get the idea that the Traveler chose the Speaker? Surely this can’t be part of the basic programming of a ghost? If it was, why wouldn’t there have been a Speaker from the start and why would the Warlords have ever been a thing?
“Look, I’ve already told you this once but you really need to pay attention to how I operate and start adjusting accordingly. Stop arguing with me all the time and asking so many questions that are completely irrelevant to the topic at hand. Who freaking cares about going over the Speaker’s head? He isn’t even here. You’re a ghost made entirely and directly out of the Traveler’s Light. If there’s anyone who would have the ‘authority’ or ‘right’ or whatever to speak to the Traveler it would be you.
“So, in short, unless you want us to end up like Ikora and Ophiuchus, you need to stop pestering me with this trivia and at least answer the questions that I ask you and save whatever sideshow questions you have, for after we’re done dealing with what’s in front of us.”
Polter just stared at Isaac for a moment considering. ‘How the heck does he even know about Ikora and Ophiuchus? And what is he on about with this “the Speaker doesn’t speak directly to the Traveler” stuff? How is it he knows all this stuff about other people and history?…I guess I should put it aside for now. He seems pretty serious. I don’t even know what would happen, if I tried speaking to the Traveler? Well, I suppose I’m about to find out.’_”Fine. I don’t know if this will work but I’ll give it a try.”
Polter, floated over to the opening in the Traveler’s structure and emitted a beam of light, that looked exactly like the beam he uses for hacking, into the opening. “Ummm…Hello? Traveler? Is this getting through at all?”
Polter, could sense a slight stirring from within the shard but no response to his greetings. He got the distinct impression that the stirring was to let him know that the Traveler was listening and he should offer more information. Polter was about to speak once more to the Traveler but he stopped. ‘Hmmm…Isaac is the one who proposed this. Maybe he had something specific he wanted to ask. Yeah, I should probably ask him first.’
“So, was there something specific that you wanted to say to the Traveler? I haven’t received a response to anything I’ve said, except a stirring from somewhere within. It gave me the distinct impression that it was listening and that I should continue.”
“Really? Wow! I actually wasn’t expecting anything to happen. I was getting ready to go back empty handed but a ‘stirring’ you say? Interesting…Say, Polter, is it possible for you to read my mind using that thing you just did?”
‘What the…read his mind!? Geez, it’s just one thing after another with this guy. Whatever, I’m done arguing with this guy.’_”Ummmm…I’m not really sure. I’ve never heard of it being done before. I could try a couple of things to see what works but really I think it would be easier if you just told me.”
“Hmmm…no, that definitely wouldn’t be easier and you’ll see what I mean if this works. How about this? I’ll sit here in a meditative state while trying to keep my thoughts open to you. While I do that, you experiment with ways to try and pick up on what I’m thinking about.”
“…Alright.”
Isaac sat down and tried his best to clear his mind of distracting thoughts and focus on allowing Polter to access his thoughts. It didn’t take long for the two to work out the kinks of this new process. Less than a half an hour later, Polter, with only his central metal ball physically manifested while his casing was dematerialized and stored in Isaac’s body, sent a modified beam of light into Isaac’s skull and suddenly found his awareness in a blank white space. “Ummm…Hello? Isaac, can you hear me?”
“Hey, sweet! It worked! Alright, now listen, Polter. I’m about to show you a whole lot of stuff that normally would cause you to freak out. I’m only saying that because you seem to be rather skittish and reactionary towards basically everything. A lot of what you’re going to see is going to be pretty shocking, so I’m gonna need you to promise me that no matter what you see you’re going to remember that it’s not actually happening and that it’s just information. What I want you to do is to make sure that you copy all of the images and information I’m about to reveal to you, exit my psyche and send all of that information over to the Traveler. Whatever thoughts or emotions you might have about that information, I need you to promise me you’ll control yourself and save it, until after the job is done. Can you do that?”
“Of course, I can. Don’t worry I’ll get it done.”_’I’m not skittish your just a weirdo.’
“Polter, you’re inside ‘my’ mind. You know I can hear you right?”
“What? ‘You’ can read ‘my’ mind now? You know what, never mind. Just get on with it.”
“Alright, here it goes.”
Isaac slowly began feeding Polter information about his past life, starting with just before the release of the original Destiny. He showed snippets of his everyday routine and his responsibilities and such, in order to paint a picture of what his old world was like. He started at the first time Destiny was announced then moving through the opening scene, the Alpha, the Beta, and the final release. He showed him all of the original plot and him playing the strikes and raids with his friends.
Once he had fleshed out the experience of playing through Destiny and all of its expansions, he then picked up the pace a bit moving through the announcement of Destiny 2 and and its release. Isaac showed him everything that would happen, up until the release of Shadowkeep and its raid. Isaac then let Polter witness the last moments of his life playing Destiny 2 and his experience of reincarnation.
Polter, from the second he witnessed Isaac’s first memories, he was stunned. He had heard of Guardians who had retained some tiny fragments of memory from their past lives and some who recovered a memory or two as they researched past events but this was so vivid and detailed. It was almost like he was experiencing it himself.
But Polter soon realized that these memories were not what he thought. Once the images Isaac showed him of this game called Destiny appeared and were followed by the opening scenes of the game showing himself and some unidentified Guardian, he almost lost it. But he didn’t, because he knew now why Isaac had given him that warning and he persevered.
When he watched the city being bombarded by Dominus Ghaul, his anxiety reached a new level. Even though it wasn’t really happening, if a ghost could sweat cold bullets he would have. When he watched the Guardian Isaac had created defeat Ghaul and restore order to the city he involuntarily released a triumphant shout. When he witnessed Isaac’s experience of dying and being reincarnated and seeing himself through Isaac’s eyes replaying the scenes from that game almost to the letter, he felt shaken to his core. So many things started to make sense and missing pieces fell into place.
‘Is…this…can this be real. My Guardian is some soul, that by some miracle, was reincarnated into this world from a world where everything we’re experiencing has already been played out in a game. What an extraordinary and incomprehensible occurrence. I really will have to thank Isaac for giving me that warning. If he hadn’t…well, considering I’m experiencing levels of anxiety and emotion I didn’t even know were possible in a ghost, I’m sure it wouldn’t have been good. Oh, right. To the task at hand. I need to get this to the Traveler.’
“Wait. I have a message I want to send along with all of that. Make sure you get this…Hello, Traveler. I’m Isaac. I don’t know how much potential lies within this shard but I’m hoping that my knowledge of this world’s future, perhaps a bit of innovation, and the power of this shard can help to locate all of your other missing pieces and prevent Ghual from getting his shackles around your main body. I have some ideas about maybe reshaping this shard into a ship-like fortress that can help locate the other shards and perhaps serve as a base of operations for a new order of Guardians, that I have planned. So, if this shard possesses the ability to accomplish these things, even just some of them, your assistance would be greatly appreciated. Not that you haven’t done enough already, it’s just that, as you can see, the situation now maybe alright but it’s gonna get a lot worse…Alright, Polter, go ahead and send it.”
Polter, having been shocked once again by his Guardian’s words, rematerialized outside of Isaac’s body and drifted over to the hole in the Traveler’s shard. He then made sure all the information was organized and clearly presented and contacted the Traveler once more.
The power within the Traveler stirred for a second time but this time Polter felt that he shouldn’t be near that hole any longer. He quickly backed away and the two watched excitedly as the radiance emitted from the hole became brighter and brighter. The boundary of the hole itself as well as the holes surrounding it began to widen and converge. After a few moments of expansion, an area roughly the size of four semi trucks appeared and curved outwards so that two halves of the area met at about a forty degree angle and the top of the two areas now were tilted inwards slightly.
After reaching this rough outline, the brilliant radiance began to fade away. As the remodeled section of the shard was revealed, Isaac and Polter noticed that they could now see through to the otherside of the shard and the parts that had not been made transparent had taken the shape of various consoles and controls, that looked very much like a spaceship control deck. In the center of this newly created spaceship control deck at the bottom of the Traveler’s shard, there stood a small single podium type console with a handprint indentation in the center of its squarish interface.
Isaac, seeing this handprint console, slowly approached and placed his hand cautiously into the indentation. Isaac could clearly sense the Traveler’s Light coming from this console. It was almost as powerful as the radiance from the holes had been before the remodeling. Nothing seemed to happen, however. He, like Polter, received the distinct impression that this console was meant as test, of sorts. He didn’t feel like the Traveler was denying his request only telling him that he was not ready. He clearly had a long way to go on his path to greatness and if he wanted the Traveler’s help he would clearly have to work for it.
Just as Isaac was going to remove his hand, he noticed that it seemed to be stuck. Isaac wondered at this for a split second, before his body was flooded with the Traveler’s light. Isaac felt the familiar sensation of his body being reinforced by the light as he leveled up twice in a row. Once he reached level ten affinity, the light flowing into his body abruptly stopped and his hand was freed from the console.
“Oh,Wow! I really wasn’t expecting two free levels. Nice! Well, Polter, I think that this little side mission can easily be classified as a huge success. Perhaps not ideally successful but then what about life is ever truly ideal.”
“Yes, a success indeed. Although, I’m still kinda reeling from everything that’s happened. I think I need some time to readjust to all these revelations. If it’s alright with you, I’ll transmat you back to the ship and let you do the driving.”
“Not a problem, Polter, ole boy. Let’s get outta here and catch up with my fireteam.”
