- Volume 1 Chapter 14 Phogoth The Fathead
Isaac’s team arrived at the World’s Grave and then made their way to the entrance of the Chamber of Night. Ferra’s team were waiting for them atop the stairs just outside the entrance.
“What’s up guys? Did you run into any trouble?” Ferra asked, as Isaac’s team approached them.
“Nothing we couldn’t handle. A Knight here a Thrall there a Wizard over there, you know the routine. Are you guys ready to put an end to this ritual?” Isaac responded.
They all agreed and readied themselves for the fight ahead. Thanks to Team Ferra’s scouting efforts they all knew what to expect, upon entering. As such they split up into two man teams and utilized a hit and run strategy, called Tap Out, to defeat the three Siphon Witches. One of the two would rush in to attack from one angle and then swiftly retreat. The second would immediately rush in from another angle to sustain the continuous two pronged attack.
With six of them there, it was just as Isaac had suspected. They were just too much for these pitiful Hive creatures. What would have been the longest and most difficult mission yet ended rather quickly. Once the Witches were down, Isaac let Polter out to do his thing. While Polter worked his magic, the two man teams posted up on the three sides of the circular platform that had doors across from them.
Because there were only a few pillars and no walls around the platform, they could maintain their positions, while assisting each other if needed. The three doors opened one after another to release a swarm of Hive. The six man team made short work of of the three consecutive swarms. After the third swarm, the door directly across from the device Polter was trying to deactivate opened up and released a fourth swarm.
This time, however, there was an Ogre, Telthor, Unborn, and two Witches and Knights along with the usual riffraff. Isaac had already prepped them on what to do if a large Major Hive were to appear. Laurel, Daniel, and Bravo focused on the smaller enemies, while Isaac and Ferra both unleashed their Nova Bombs right into the Ogre’s face. The Ogre nearly fell over from the combined force of their attacks and its face was mangled and falling apart. The Ogre recovered its bearings and started to push forward, once again.
Koren, however, wasn’t about to let Ferra and Isaac have all the fun. Just before the two Nova Bombs faded away, Koren leapt high into the air with a powerful aura of lightning surging around his body. Koren arrived directly over the Ogre’s head and dropped at a frightening LAMP accelerated speed. He landed directly on the Ogre’s already ate up head and caved in its head creating a crater on top of the Ogre.
Immediately after its head was caved in, the Ogre’s body gave way to the force of the attack and Koren continued downward landing mightily on the ground in a spectacular discharge of lightning. The impact created a large cloud of dust and chitinous debris that was illuminated by the lightning spreading out along the ground chasing down the few remaining enemies and turning them to ash.
So even though the battle was short, everyone involved agreed that it was thoroughly satisfying and loads of fun. They all sat down to rest for a bit, as Polter finally freed the Traveler’s shard from its prison of darkness and transmated it to Isaac’s ship.
“Well, I certainly think we can file that one under ‘Massive Success’ and report back to Ikora now…” Isaac proclaimed, as Polter contacted Ikora. “…What’s up Ikora? You gotta minute?”
“Certainly, Isaac. Were you perhaps successful in your mission?”
“I was. Me and my fireteam fought our way into the Temple of Crota and met up with Ferra’s team, after they completed their mission. We then combined forces to wipe out the Hive congregating in the Chamber of Night. It turns out that their ritual involved a shard of the Traveler. They had it bound with darkness and were using it as a medium to siphon away the Traveler’s Light. That being said, we’ve secured the shard and the information from the World’s Grave and all six of us are ready for a new mission if you have one.” Isaac reported.
“My word. This ritual was more of a threat than we suspected. Thank you all for your hard work. You’ve done a great service to the City and the Traveler. However, it isn’t everyday that I have a six man team inside the Hellmouth. Normally, in a situation like this, I wouldn’t ask Guardians who have already done so much to push themselves further, unless it was urgent.
“Since you asked specifically for another mission, you’re already there, and you all seem eager, I’ll give you one we were planning to send a more seasoned fireteam after. Even deeper into the Hellmouth than you are now is a place known as the Summoning Pits. Go there and you’ll find a Hive abomination bred for unspeakable evil. Pierce through the veil of their Summoning Pits, Guardians, and kill whatever is lurking within. Do this and I can assure you that a substantial reward will be waiting for all of you when you return.”
“Descend into the dark scary place, kill Hive abominations, get big rewards. Sounds like a helluva time to me! Whaddya say gang?” Isaac asked.
“Hell yeah!”
“Let’s do it!”
“Count me in!”
They all gave their consent one after the other and then said farewell to Ikora, who then disconnected and left them to their task.
Following their ghosts instructions, they made their way back to the Circle of Bones and then deeper and deeper into the Hellmouth. The path to the Summoning Pits was not like the one in game.
Upon breaching the door where the Pits would’ve been, they came upon a domed room with a thirty foot wide circular hole in the middle. After inspecting the interior of the hole, they noticed that the edge of the circle formed an overhang and that twelve feet below the overhang was another overhang. Each overhang was connected to the ground around it where various caves branched out. Each overhang had another overhang twelve feet below it all the way down to the bottom. They could tell that this hole was impressively deep, because they could only barely see the bottom as a tiny speck.
Not wanting to be unprepared for the upcoming battle, they didn’t rush. They took their time to clear out any Hive that they were aware of, even if it was slightly out of the way. Two hours later, they reached the bottom and they were all at full Light Charge. The room at the bottom had only one door that was open and leading to a massive hallway. Inside the hallway they couldn’t see the end of it in either direction. There were doors, equally as massive as the hall itself, on either side of the hall.
“These are the Summoning Pits. The abomination we’re looking for is easily the strongest thing down here, so it’s not hard to sense where it is. All of these rooms are filled with Hive but few of them compare to that thing. Come on, follow me, it’s down just a little further this way.” Polter instructed them.
After reaching the door in question, they stopped for a moment to prepare for the battle ahead. After a quick run down of their strategy and some backup plans, they all approached the door that was opening up before them.
As soon as they could see through the door, they witnessed a massive Ogre chained to the floor in the center of an enormous room. The back of the room opened up directly into the Hellmouth’s endless depths. On either side of the Ogre, Phogoth the Untamed, there were three wide rectangular pillars slanted towards the center of the room. The pillars didn’t reach all the way to the roof but stopped less than half way and platforms were positioned atop each one. On the right side of the room, there was a platform with several doors connecting to it and a vertically slanted shear wall leading up to it. On the left side of the room was a similar yet slightly lower platform that formed an overhang against the rocky wall it was set against.
Isaac was the first one in, he dashed through the door and immediately let loose a Void Bomb into Phogoth’s face. Ferra was directly behind him and, as soon as Isaac maneuvered to the right she unleashed another Void Bomb further increasing the pressure on Phogoth. Ferra then maneuvered to the left to make way for Bravo who generously gifted Phogoth with a third Purple Power Pie.
Under the Combined pressure of three nearly simultaneous Void Bombs, Phogoth was pushed back as he broke free of his chains. Immediately after their attacks, Isaac Renegade Rushed to the right and Ferra did the same as on the left. Bravo and Koren posted up on each side of the platform from which they launched their attacks and held position. As Daniel and Laurel came through through the door they went to the right and left respectively and Renegade Rushed over to where Isaac and Ferra were.
Only a few seconds after the whole crew had joined the fight, they all felt an oppressive atmosphere fill the entire room. Koren and Bravo maneuvered so that could see back towards the door, while keeping the enemies suppressed. Sure enough the door was covered over with a veil of darkness that they dared not touch. The back of the room, which once showed the empty space of the Hellmouth’s seemingly endless depths, was now covered in a similar veil.
While none of them liked this new development, they also weren’t completely taken off guard. Isaac had warned them that something like this might happen and told them to forge ahead and stick to the plan. Worrying about it wouldn’t help them, only defeating all of the Hive that were thrown at them would allow them to survive. Feeling their connection to the Light being temporarily severed by this barrier, they all silently cursed their misfortune and focused on what had to be done.
After thinning the enemies numbers, the Renegades rushed back to the starting platform. Koren and Bravo made sure to stay positioned by the various panels and pillars that dotted the platform and the floor below, while engaging the smaller Hive. Isaac got Phogoth’s attention, while making sure to avoid his eye blasts. He stood in full view and used his sniper rifle to keep the big guy focused on him. Daniel utilized a nearby vertical panel positioned on their platform for cover and whipped out his Golden Gun. Daniel placed his sixth shot into Phogoth’s face, draining him of nearly all his remaining light, as Isaac used up all his sniper ammo and was switching to his scout rifle.
Trying to switch weapons and evade Phogoth’s eye beam proved to be a mistake, for Isaac. He failed to dodge quick enough and, just as he had finished his switch, he was blasted back by that beast’s powerful Void Blasts. Isaac was only stunned by the attack for a fraction of a second, even though his shields were completely drained he had taken some damage. He quickly used his LAMP technique to its it’s fullest to avoid being slammed up against the wall and trapped into a certain death.
As soon as Isaac was hit, Daniel already had his own sniper out and began drawing Phogoth’s fire. Isaac rushed into cover and continued to fire away with his scout rifle, while Polter healed his wounds and restored his shields.
Just before Daniel’s sniper ammo was empty, he signaled to Ferra and Laurel, who had been pouring scout rifle rounds into it, to switch to sniper fire. The two played their part and, as soon as Daniel’s ammo ran dry, Laurel blasted six of her own fiery bullets at the ugly f.u.c.ker and then joined Ferra in giving all they could to the poor Phogoth in desperate need of sniper fire. Ferra learned from Isaac’s mistake and made sure to take cover before switching to her scout rifle.
Daniel and Isaac had immediately rushed to Bravo and Koren’s aid, as Ferra and Laurel took over. With two of them defending each side in Titan mode, Ferra and Laurel were given enough time to unleash all their fury, despite more enemies pouring into the room. Once all the sniper ammo had been expended, Phogoth’s face looked nearly as ate up as Telthor’s had been before his head was caved in. Which is honestly kind of a testament to just how tough Phogoth is, considering everything that they’ve thrown at him so far.
Wasting no time, the original renegades rushed back into action taking out the replacement Wizards and Knights along with the occasional unlucky Thrall or Acolyte. When they weren’t being rushed by Thralls, Koren and Bravo continued to focus their fire on the distant Thralls and Acolytes to make things easier on the renegades.
After thinning the enemies ranks once more, they returned to their platform to put an end to this stubborn Ogre that, in their minds, should have already died. While Phogoth hadn’t stopped sending Void Blasts at them, they could tell that missing half of his face had taken its toll and even his movements were undoubtedly slower than when they had first engaged him.
They all went back to their original positions. This time Daniel held its attention with scout rifle fire and Isaac unleashed his last Void Bomb, before pulling out his scout rifle. After approximately the same time that it took them to run out of sniper ammo, Ferra and Laurel repeated the assault from their side. This time Isaac and Daniel continued laying down fire as Ferra and Laurel played their part.
Once both sides had finished their roles, They continued firing at the beast as they signaled to Koren and Bravo. As soon as they received the signal, Koren and Bravo laid down Wards of Dawn at their respective locations and immediately rushed to the middle of the platform, clad themselves with Arc Energy, and jumped high into the air. The renegades took up the two defending positions inside the Wards, while continuing their assault on the Hive’s many minions.
Koren and Bravo soared nearly all the way to the roof in reverse super man poses. Their extended arms seemed as if they formed a single fist, while they maneuvered themselves as one as if they were connected at the hip. Their ascent, however, quickly turned into a descent as they pointed their double Fist of Havoc at the Ogre beneath them and dropped it like it was hot.
Unlike with Telthor, Phogoth only had a small caved in spot on his head and, although clearly shaken and weakened, he remained standing. Isaac, realizing that this wasn’t enough but that Phogoth was definitely close to his end, made a split second decision.
“Everyone, Bum Rush and Clip.” Isaac ordered.
Everyone on the platform switched to their shotguns and rushed headlong at Phogoth, firing the whole way. Koren and Bravo flipped off the abomination’s head and landed behind him. They began using the last bit of their Light to deliver powerful blows to the back of his knees as the renegades forced their shotguns directly into its face, while continuing to fire.
It took longer than any of them would have expected but after nearly five seconds of suppressing Phogoth he finally lost his balance and toppled to the floor. After nearly twenty more seconds of Phogoth’s useless struggling and flailing and the teams continuous firing, the massive monstrosity scattered into billions of pieces of chitinous confetti.
With the only real threat to their lives finally defeated, the team took their time cleaning up the remaining Hive. A few seconds after the last Hive fell, the barrier of darkness dispersed and they all breathed a collective sigh of relief, after having their connection to the Light restored. They also felt a large amount of Light pouring into them at that time and seemed pleased but also slightly confused.
“Hey, Polter. Just now, I felt like a lot of Light was pouring into my body when the connection was reestablished. You know anything about that.” Isaac asked.
“You do remember me telling you that everything within the reach of the Traveler’s influence is bathed in its Light, right? Well, even though that shroud of darkness could block out the external Light, it also locked in the Light that was already inside of these Hive preventing it from dispersing, after their defeat. Once the shroud was lifted, we ghosts had a short moment to capture some of that Light for our respective Guardians, before it could disperse.” Polter explained to everyone’s delight. Now all the enemies, they thought were a total loss, had managed to make them stronger.
“Alright, gang. After all of this, I think we should officially remove today from the ‘Massive Success’ file and place it into the ‘Overwhelmingly Awesome Day Amazing Stupendousness’ file. All in favor say Aye.” Isaac prompted them.
Everyone one joined into a mighty chorus of powerful and enthusiastic agreement. Whooping and Hollering, fist pumping and a couple of ‘F.u.c.k Yeah’s later, they contacted Ikora with the good news and made their way quite ecstatically back to the Tower, for some Overwhelmingly Awesome Z’s Stupendousness.
