(Day 20)
Both teams cleared out two more rooms, before finally reaching level twenty. As they emerged from their respective chambers, they all were wearing smiles, either on their faces or in their minds.
Whenever Isaac completed his Light Body with his twentieth level, he felt a qualitative transformation that couldn’t be compared to the previous level ups. He felt that he was now in complete control over all his abilities and his energies. He knew that there were still twenty levels above the Light Body but the feeling he had at that moment, compared to how he had previously experienced the Light, made it hard to imagine that there could be. Whenever he was back in the hallway with the rest of his teammates, he spoke to Polter.
“Say, Polter, didn’t you promise me an explanation about the next twenty levels, once I completed my Light Body?” Isaac asked.
“That I did. If you’re ready to hear it I’ll fill you in?”
“Absolutely, I’m dying to hear this explanation.”
“Alright then, I’ll start with your current status. Right now, you should be able to do most of the things that I’ve been doing for you except resurrection. Healing yourself, creating your own Light Shields, and even managing how much of each type of ammunition I carry without having to ask me about. Basically, at this point, my inventory is your inventory.
“As for how you level up from here, well there’s a reason why they refer to your levels as affinity and your familiarity with energies as attunement. It’s an important distinction, because you’re next twenty levels are basically increasing your attunement to the Light. You’ve just experienced a very rare event that mostly only ever occurs with Warlocks and only the rare few of them.
“Because your attunement to the Light is in large part based on your knowledge of how the Light works, its origins, and so forth, it’s possible to immediately raise your level past twenty upon completing the Light Body, due to the understanding of the Light that you’ve already developed.
“That being said, the others probably didn’t experience anything as dramatic as what you just did. If I’m not mistaken Ferra would come the closest as she managed to skip to level twenty three and Brovo managed to get to level twenty one. You, however, just reached level twenty five, a feat that very few Warlocks have ever accomplished. It can often take centuries for a Guardian to increase his/her Light Attunement all the way to forty. For a Guardian who manages to hit twenty five, the highest possible skip, directly after his Light Body is completed it may not even take a decade.”
“F.u.c.k yeah! That’s what I’m talking about! Wait a minute, you can tell what level the others are?” Isaac asked, as the rest of them looked at him in awe.
“Yes, as you already know, my capabilities are directly linked to how attuned you are to the Light. With you reaching twenty five, I can sense how much attunement other Guardians have obtained and I can also generate orbs of light from excess elemental energy that isn’t expended directly into an enemy. Orbs of light can be generated from any source of light but this is the most common. Since you are all here and also level twenty, I’ll go ahead and explain the whole Light Body system from level twenty to level forty.
“I’ve already told you what benefits come with being level twenty but that is just the beginning. Part of your progress through the next twenty levels will involve you building upon the foundation of your Light Body. You’ll need to construct various Light Organs that will assist you in using your various abilities. Each level from here on out will increase the efficiency with which you utilize the Light. Certain level milestones, however, are required to unlock the capacity to construct certain Light Organs.
“At level twenty you will only be able to construct Light Organs that generate Elemental Energy. At twenty five you’ll be able to construct the Light Heart, which provides you with health regeneration, and the Light Shield Generator, which does exactly what it sounds like.
“At thirty you’ll be able to construct the Light Condensation Organ, which allows you to generate everything from Orbs of Light to Sparks of Light. The grades of Condensed Light go from simple Orbs of Light to Motes to Charges to Sparks. Sparks of Light, however, can only be generated after your Light Condensation Organ is upgraded at level forty.
“The Light Condensation Organ is unique, in that you will not be able to surpass level thirty five, until you’ve constructed it. This is the only known potential bottleneck on your journey to level forty.
“So at level thirty five, you’ll be able to construct the Light Wielder’s Organ, that allows you to modify the Light itself into abilities like a protective Light wall barrier or a Light Dome or Rift that heals anyone inside it.
“Once you’ve reached level forty, you’ll have nearly flawless control over the Light and your abilities. You’ll also be able to construct a Ghost Mimic Organ that essentially does everything that your ghost does. But it’s almost never used, since most Guardians are fairly close to their ghosts. There’s only one person I’m aware of that’s ever bothered to make it and that’s Ikora. Before you ask, if something so bad happened between her and her ghost that it made her stop speaking to it completely, do you think that she would want to talk about it? Exactly, so keep your curiosity to yourselves.
“That’s about it for now. There are some other details but your ghosts can inform you when the time comes.” Polter explained to the group.
“So even though we can heal ourselves and generate shields by ourselves, these organs will basically do that stuff on their own without any thought from us?” Ferra asked.
“Yep, that’s the gist of it.” Polter responded.
All six of them sat there in the hallway in silence thinking of how best to progress from that point, considering the information they’d just been given. After a few minutes of silence, Isaac spoke up.
“Well, gang, I think it’s time to head back. We’ve been at this for nearly twelve hours. We’ve accomplished what we came to do and then some, so let’s file this one under ‘Mission Accomplished’ and go get some well deserved rest. Whaddya say?” Isaac prompted his team.
They all quickly agreed and made their way back to the surface and on to the Tower. Just as the team arrived at the Tower but before they could go their separate ways, Isaac spoke to them once again.
“Do you guys remember the mysterious message me and my team received back at the Temple of Crota?”
“I’d actually been meaning to ask you about that but, ever since then, things have kind of been going at full speed. Are you finally ready to go see what this person is all about?” Ferra asked.
“Yes and no. I want going after her to be the next mission we go on but I also want to make sure we get in plenty of training to acclimate ourselves to our new capabilities. So take as long as you need to recover because for the next two weeks we’re going to be training and comparing notes. Most of it will be our regular solo training but on certain days we should get together for group training. After training for two weeks, we should be more than prepared to face whatever is waiting for us on Venus. So if you have new abilities or techniques to master or you need to increase your attunements, these next two weeks will be the perfect opportunity. Are we all clear on the plan?”
His six teammates all signaled their understanding and made their way to their individual rooms.
(Day 21)
The next morning, after his usual routine, Isaac spoke with Polter about the designs he wanted for his Custom Armor and Weapons.
“Hey, Polter, do you remember the Sovereign Set of New Monarchy Armor that my character was wearing in Destiny 2?”
“Of course, I remember everything I’ve ever seen or heard. It’s what you would probably call an eidetic memory or perfect recall. Why?”
“I wanted to cash in on that free set of Custom Gear that Ikora promised me. I want it to look almost exactly like that set, with some exceptions. We should probably do that mind meld thing again to sort out the details.”
“Alright, let’s do it then.”
Isaac assumed a meditative position and allowed Polter to enter his mind. They then worked together to fashion the armor exactly how Isaac intended, using a holographic interface Polter was able to manifest inside Isaac’s mindscape.
Isaac got rid of the New Monarchy symbols and replaced them with spearhead imagery on the bottom corner of the robes. He then modified the Leg Armor to be symmetrical and display the same symbol. He then modified the portion covering his feet to look like the Boots of Optimacy, without the pointy bits. With the aesthetics out of the way, he planned out all of the tech that would go into each peice.
He designated tech that would increase the amount of Light he could absorb from Void Damage kills, for all four of his armor pieces. He then set his sights on the Mida Multi-Tool and Mini Tool along with two modified blades that could increase the damage done with Void Energy, while transforming a Void Cloak applied to it into Void Flames.
He would probably have to pay for part of the Multi-Tool since it was a grade above what he was promised but that was fine since he had plenty of Glimmer. The Multi-Tool itself he wanted modified to sacrifice the speed boost, for a damage boost, and the synergy, with the Mini Tool, would get the same exchange in effects. He also set the Mini Tool to be a Void Energy weapon.
Having completed all of his loadout’s details, Isaac left his room to eat a quick breakfast. Isaac finished up his breakfast and made his way over to Banshee’s workshop.
“Hi there, Banshee. How’s the armory life treating ya?”
“Oh, hi there, Isaac wasn’t it? I’m doing well. I’m doing what I love and loving what I do, so I can’t complain. What brings you buy today?”
“I’m here to order a set of Custom gear. Ikora should have spoken to you about it, right?”
“That she did but you’ll have to hold on a sec. I’ll need to confirm that you’re in fact the intended recipient.” Banshee said, as he contacted Ikora and confirmed Isaac’s details with her.
“Well, looks like I’ve got the right guy so what did you have in mind?”
“If I can have permission to access your terminal, then I can send you all the details. We’ve already sorted everything out.” Polter informed him.
“Is that right? Well, in that case, have it. Depending on how detailed the information is, this could make things a lot easier.” Banshee responded.
Polter floated in through the window to Banshee’s workshop and accessed his terminal. He downloaded all the information they had went over and then returned to Isaac.
Banshee then utilized his terminal’s interface to see what this job required. He was quite surprised by the level of detail and by some of the requests included.
“Ummm…I hope you don’t need this set anytime soon, because it’s going to take well over a week to finish all of this. Probably close to eleven maybe twelve days. Also the Mida Multi-Tool will cost you even more than normal, even if we consider one of your free weapons as partial compensation. Modifying an Exotic grade weapon is no joke and it’s what will require most of my attention. I’ll probably even have to add an extra charge for modifying the synergy effect of the Mini Tool. Everything else should be covered by your gear pack.”
“That’s not a problem at all. I suspected that there would be extra charges and I won’t need any of this for a full two weeks, so don’t rush. I’ll come pick everything up at that time, if there are no problems with my requests?”
“No problems here. As long as you’ve got the Glimmer to back it up, everything will be ready in two weeks time. You can count on it.”
“Excellent! I’ll see you then, Banshee.”
As soon as he confirmed his Custom Loadout with Banshee, Isaac took off towards the Traveler’s shard. With both the retrieval of the smaller shard and him reaching level twenty five, he was hoping the shard would fully transform or at least progress towards its completed state.
As the Traveler’s shard came into view, Isaac was stunned. The shard had completely transformed into a fully fledged fortress. He never expected that simply stopping that Hive ritual would cause this dramatic of a change.
Isaac landed where he always did and slowly approached the shards new form, while taking in all the details. The shard had once formed a curved overhang that showed clear signs of breakage. It now stood nearly five hundred meters tall and less than two hundred meters at its base. It looked like some kind of Divine Skyscr.a.p.er that could turn into a Spaceship at a moment’s notice.
Isaac reached the edge of the shard/spaceship/skyscr.a.p.er and noticed a two meter wide circular outline within the fortress’ exterior, approximately ten feet of the ground. He could also clearly see that the handprint console was still there just beside this circular outline. Isaac reached out his hand and placed it within the indentation.
As soon as his hand had come into full contact with the console, the circular outlined area began to move away from the rest of the structure. In less than two seconds the outline had become a cylindrical entryway and he could see the inside of this massive fortress.
This first floor was not a floor at all it was a wall, or at least that’s the way it seemed. This was a flying fortress after all and the wall he was looking at would be the floor once he entered. Isaac could feel something pulling him inside. Isaac crossed the threshold and quickly began descending towards the floor.
Realizing that the interior had it own form of gravity control and that he was about to crash into the floor, Isaac quickly used LAMP to right himself and break his fall. Landing on the floor, he looked around at what was a completely empty and bare room. White walls, floors, and ceiling but nothing else. Isaac saw a door and another handprint console on the far side of the room, that led towards the front of the ship, and walked through it.
Isaac continued down the increasingly smaller and smaller rooms, until he reached a dead end with another circular opening in the floor. After going through this entrance and walking a couple of more hallways, he finally reached the control room that had formed on his first visit.
The original handprint console was still there on its pedestal. Isaac walked over to it and placed his hand upon it, once again. This time he could sense the stirring that Polter had mentioned and then a scene from his past life flashed before his eyes.
He was maneuvering his Destiny 2 Warlock through the facilities on Titan to retrieve a Golden Age CPU. Once his character had its hands on the CPU, the scene ended and his hand was repelled from the console. The console that had previously had a handprint indentation on it now had a hemispherical indentation just the right size to hold that Golden Age CPU.
As per usual, the Traveler didn’t seemed to so much speak as give you the impressions, feelings, and visions that you need to understand what it wants from you. This time the message was clear. Go to Titan, retrieve the Golden Age CPU, bring it back, and place it within this console.
Now that Isaac knew exactly what he had to do to get this massive Light Fortress up and running, he was supremely happy. As soon as he and his team finished their training and checked out Venus, they would immediately head to Titan to get that CPU. Feeling quite elated at this new development, Isaac made his way out of the Light Fortress and back into his ship.
———-
Back at the tower, Isaac spent each of the next four days in a different Meditation Chamber. On the fifth day, Isaac made his way to one of the training grounds and spent all day practicing his new shielding technique and and trying to create new Kinetic Energy abilities.
His basic melee was already a Kinetic Energy attack but it was too simplistic. If it was to qualify as subclass worthy, then it would need something extra. He modified his melee attack to take on three different forms. One was modified to cause piercing damage, another was modified for slashing damage, and the other was simply a brute force “get the f.u.c.k outta my face” that sent the target flying.
He only managed to come up with one grenade but it was impressive. It was similar to a Void Vortex Grenade. This vortex, however, was a chaotically spinning orb of tiny needle sized Kinetic Slashes.
After considering the possibilities of a unique jump for his Kinetic Subclass, he dismissed everything else and decided that passive levitation was the only thing worthy of his subclass. It didn’t take too long to work out a rudimentary method, since LAMP allowed him to accomplish this rather easily.
What he was looking for, however, was something far more efficient that at least a level ten or fifteen Guardian could use. He wasn’t sure whether it was possible but he would continue researching this matter, regardless.
On the sixth day, he called his six teammates together and they discussed all of the new abilities they had developed and were attempting to develop. After two hours of discussion, they all went out to the European Dead Zone to test out each others abilities and develop new fireteam strategies.
They spent the seventh day doing the same fireteam training and clearing out Fallen bases around the Farm’s encampment. His team was absolutely dumbfounded by the dramatic changes that had overcome the Traveler’s shard but Isaac convinced them not to linger on it. Telling them that these things would probably happen from time to time and not to pay it too much attention.
On the eighth to tenth day, it was more physical training and then another four days of Attunement Meditation. Isaac made sure to end his meditations early enough, on the fourteenth day, to stop by Banshee’s to pick up his gear. With his newly acquired Custom and Exotic gear, Isaac headed off to dreamland in preparation for tomorrow’s mission.
