- Volume 1 Chapter 18 One Fell Swoop Prt. 1
(Day 35)
Isaac attended to his morning routine, before heading to the Hangar to meet with his fireteam. At this time, the lowest level on his team was twenty one. Everyone, over the course of their training, had managed to increase their level by one. Isaac suspected that their quick progress could partially be put down to them all having Warlock training.
During their solo training they had all completed the various abilities they were working on and during the group training they all learned each other’s techniques. Isaac had managed to increase his attunement to Solar Energy to the point he could activate all four amplification pillars. As soon as this mission was over, he would seek out Ikora to walk further down the Warlock path and also learn the SunSinger Subclass.
This Subclass required a great deal of knowledge about death and the line between it and life. It also required a complete attunement to Solar Energy. Now that Isaac had achieved the required level of attunement and his Light Body he would need to spend a few days killing himself repeatedly, in order to study this unique death state.
Here in the hangar, everyone was fairly antsy this morning and wanted eagerly to get this mission started. They spared few words for each other, as they hopped into their sh.i.p.s and followed Isaac to Venus.
After they set down in the Shattered Coast, Isaac addressed his team. “Alright, Fireteam Ferra, you guys locate the sparrow link, which should be over there somewhere, and we’ll head over to that abandoned outpost to see what we can find. Meet us there when you’re done.”
The two teams went their separate ways and, after activating the sparrow link, Ferra led her team over to the outpost. Isaac made sure to be the first one to reach the outpost, so he could have Polter access the Vex sensors.
Polter flew over to the sensor equipment and worked his magic. “Alright, I’ve got it. We should be able to detect these things now.”
“Things? What things?” Daniel asked.
Ferra and her team came running up to them at this point. Laurel immediately blurted out, “Guys, guys, we just found out that this planet has some type of war machine life forms called the Vex that can teleport at will. Ha, wait until they get a taste of my Blink Domain. I’ll teach them what teleporting is all about.”
“Those things, Daniel.” Polter answered.
“That’s the spirit, Laurel.” Isaac said. “We’ve got a lot to do today and turning these Vex into scrap metal is going to be a big part of it. However, the information we obtained from this machine seems to indicate that the Vex aren’t just on Venus they have a fairly formidable presence on Mars and they’ve completely dominated Mercury.
“That being said, I’m going to contact Ikora to see what missions she has available for Venus and Mars. Once we know what needs to be done and where, we’ll make a plan.”
Polter connected Isaac to Ikora. “Hello, Ikora. Do you have a minute?”
“Of course, are you and your fireteam looking for a mission?”
“That we are. We’re here on Venus and just learned about the Vex. I was wondering if you could just send us a full list of missions that are available for Venus and Mars and then we can decide how we want to proceed. Also, I should mention that we’re all at least level twenty one and just completed two weeks of training our new abilities. We’re all ready to put those abilities to the test.”
“Level twenty one! That’s certainly impressive, for your entire team to have progressed that far this fast. You did say ‘at least’ right? What’s the highest level on your team?”
“I’m at twenty six, Ferra is at twenty four, Bravo is at twenty two, and everyone else is at twenty one.”
“Twenty six! And Ferra is at twenty four! Good grief! That’s not just impressive that’s phenomenal! I have to say Isaac, you and your fireteam are progressing at a fairly alarming pace. I knew you were talented but this is something else entirely. You must have skipped levels when you completed your light body, am I right?”
“I did. I skipped to twenty five, Ferra to twenty three, and Bravo to twenty one. We’ve also been increasing our attunements and working on new abilities during the last couple of weeks.”
“I see, that certainly would explain things. Well, you all have already proven yourselves quite capable in the last mission. That, combined with your impressive progress, makes me confident in your ability to deal with any of these missions. I’ll send the details over as soon as I’ve organized all the information.”
“Sweet! Thanks Ikora! We’ll see you back at the tower.”
“Bye, Isaac.”
Ikora disconnected and the crew waited only a couple of minutes to receive the mission details. Some of the game missions weren’t there, because they are directly related to the Exo Stranger and didn’t originate from Vanguard intelligence. Isaac, however, knew what needed to be done and would handle those missions himself or fill in the blanks for them.
“Alright, gang, Ikora has sent us quite a few missions and this may seem a bit much but I plan on us taking on everyone of them today. Are you guys ready to take on a real challenge?” Isaac addressed his teammates.
“I’m ready for anything.” Daniel said.
“I was ready yesterday.” Laurel added.
“I’m genuinely interested to hear what you think would provide a challenge to the six of us, after defeating that Hive monstrosity.” Koren replied.
“Well, that’s actually the challenging part of my plan today. For this particular outing, I suggest that we all split up and take on a different mission. We already know that the six of us together are absolutely dominant. I wouldn’t say we could take on anything, at this point, but pretty close to it.
“So, in order to push us to our limits and also to prevent us from becoming complacent in the strength that our numbers provide us, I suggest we divide all these missions up and tackle them individually. What say you?”
Daniel and Laurel’s eyes were gleaming as they almost simultaneously exclaimed, “Let’s do it.”
Bravo was also excited by this suggestion. “I’m not gonna be showed up by the likes of you two. I can guarantee I’ll finish mine first.”
“Not likely.” Laurel.
“We’ll just have to see about that.” Daniel.
“This certainly seems like a worthy challenge. I would agree that working together too much would probably only lead to pitfalls in our progression. A few solo missions, to compliment our solo training, are just the thing we need.” Koren agreed.
“I agree. This should be fun and provide us with ample opportunities to test ourselves.” Ferra added.
“Nice! That’s what I like to hear. Now listen up. I’ll tell you guys where you need to go.” Said Isaac.
Isaac already knew the coordinates to the Black Garden, so there wasn’t any need to run off to the Reef and meet with Mara Sov. He had plans to visit her eventually but things would play out differently this time around. Already knowing where the Black Garden was, he decided to pretend as though part of the information in the machine and that was given by Ikora was concerning this location.
He told his teammates that he would deal with all the missions on Venus except for the matter of a certain Archon Priest and The Nexus Mind. Koren and Daniel, respectively, would handle each of these missions. Isaac ordered Ferra to handle all of the missions on Mars except for those concerning the Psion Flayers and Valus Ta’aurc. Laurel and Bravo, respectively, would handle these.
“Hmmm…If I’m not wrong, it seems as though we leaders are taking more missions but the difficulty of those missions seems far inferior to the ones the others are taking.” Ferra commented.
“That’s true but it’s only natural for leaders to let those under them go first. How do you think our teammates would feel, if we not only were the ones making all the decisions but also used our authority to grab all the glory for ourselves. It’s not like finishing these missions will be the end of the Guardian’s conflict and will reign in an era of endless peace. There will be plenty of opportunities in the future for us two to shine. For now though, the best thing we can do is clear out these smaller missions and support our teammates if and when they need it.” Isaac explained.
“Yes, I suppose you’re right about that… Alright, I’m ready to get this show on the road. Fireteam Ferra sound off.” Ferra yelled enthusiastically.
“Laurel!” “Bravo!” The two shouted only half seriously.
The three Guardians then transmated back to their sh.i.p.s and made their way to Mars. Isaac and his team discussed where to meet up, once they were finished, and then went their separate ways. Koren headed to the Ember Caves and Isaac and Daniel headed to the Ishtar Academy.
Once they reached the academy, Daniel admired the shiny Vex conflux for a moment and then left Isaac to his mission and proceeded forward to handle his own. In the middle of the two balconies that ran along both sides of this room, the Vex conflux stood near the entrance they had just passed through. Polter, already knowing what to do, was quick to start analyzing the conflux.
“Yep, everything is just like what you showed me. Only a few more seconds, before you can smash some Vex heads in.” Polter said.
“Haha, now you’re talking my language.”
Isaac witnessed the dark clouds of seemingly metallic dust appear at a couple of different places in the room. Soon, several bipedal metal frames, with white radiant cores in their exposed abdomens, materialized from those dark clouds.
Isaac didn’t waste any time and immediately went into action. It only took him three minutes, to deal with the all the Vex that had been summoned. After the last Vex fell, he approached one of the Vex frames and bent down to examine it more closely.
“Hmmm…If only there were an Exo Stranger nearby, who could come tell us things we already know about the Black Garden. Sigh…Polter, do you think our luck would be so good?” Isaac asked.
“Not likely. That kind of stuff only happens in stories.” Polter responded.
Isaac had to stop himself from laughing. He hadn’t expected Polter to actually come out with something like that. ‘Wait a minute. Polter just told a joke! His first joke ever! I’m so proud of my little scrap metal ball.’
A voice from behind them interrupted Isaac’s thoughts. “I don’t know how you know who I am, know that I was here, or know about the Black Garden but I don’t have much time here so I’ll get straight to the point. Do you intend to deal with the Black Garden?”
“I do. As a matter of fact, I intend to deal with it tomorrow, first thing in the morning.”
“…are you serious? This isn’t a game Guardian.”
“I’m perfectly serious and I’m well aware of what’s at stake. Perhaps even more aware than your enlightened self.”
“…I see. Well, I’m glad to hear it.” Static and a muffled voice can be heard from the stranger’s equipment. “…I have to go. Good luck with the garden. I’ll seek you out again, if you succeed.” The Exo Stranger then disappeared behind a shimmering veil that completely erased her presence.
“Well, I have to say I’m damned proud of you, Polter. If I’m not mistaken, that was the first time you’ve told a joke, since becoming my Ghost. I had to stop myself from laughing, for a second there. I’m glad to see you’ve started to loosen up a bit.”
“Yeah, at first, I was really worried about you meeting an early grave, due to your recklessness. After you showed me all of those things, however, I began to develop a new perspective. I began to realize that a lot of things are not the way I thought they were and some things that I didn’t know made me see that there is a much bigger picture than I had not considered. Also, I suppose some of your…how should I call it?…distinctiveness has rubbed off on me.”
“Haha, that’s good to hear, Polter. Whaddya say we forge on then buddy ol’ chum?”
“Right, I’ll lead the way.”
Isaac and Polter made their way even deeper into the Ishtar Academy slaughtering Vex and Fallen along the way. They worked their into Hall of Whispers, made short work of the Fallen, and opened up the Archive. After clearing the Archive and retrieving all that sweet juicy Golden Age info, they retraced their steps and exited back into the open air via the Shattered Coast.
The two traveled along the Ishtar Cliffs and then on into Campus 9 to see if the research outpost had any more data concerning the Vex. After snatching the goods, they made their way into the Citadel to see if the conflux there had any useful information. With the research outpost and the conflux fully stripped, they then wound their way around the Ishtar Sink’s rocky terrain, all the way over to the Endless Steps.
Isaac, upon seeing this familiar scene in front of him, quickly dispatched all the enemies in the surrounding area. He reached the top of the steps, where the platform that would summon the Gate Lord was placed in the ground. He stood before the massive portal gate and simply took in the sight. All of those details that he never would have been able to distinguish in the game making the already impressive sight even more so.
In the game, the players ghosts states that Gate Lords are three stories tall. Then, upon actually seeing the thing that was only half the size of the gate, you almost instantly think ‘Wait, I’m pretty sure this thing isn’t three stories tall.’ It was a truly disappointing moment in the game.
‘Here’s to hoping that this real life Gate Lord is at least true to its stated size.’ Isaac thought, as he hopped on top of a pillar on the left of the gate. Pulling his rocket launcher out of his inventory, he placed it down on top of the pillar and then returned to the summoning platform.
Isaac moved across the non-baryonic stream of red energy that formed a visual border around the platform. As he stood there, the border disappeared and then slowly began to reconstruct itself as a border of white energy. As soon as the border was completed, Isaac witnessed the Gate Lord beginning to take form within the gate.
“Hahahaha, now that’s what I call a Gate Lord. The much truer to reality scale of this world has finally done something more than simply putting more distance between me and my objectives. This is going to be good.”
As soon as the Gate Lord took his first step out of the gate, Isaac, using his LAMP technique, boosted himself towards the Gate Lords midsection. With a Kinetic Grenade already in hand, he planted it directly into the Gate Lord’s exposed core and then Ka-me-ha-me-ha’d a Nova Bomb into his Kinetic Grenade. The two combined forces and seemed to completely stall the Gate Lord.
The Gate Lord was visibly struggling against this oppressive force created from the fusion of Void and Kinetic energy. Because of the unique nature of Kinetic Energy, being a non-elemental energy, it could be combined with elemental energy to quite devastating effect. Isaac had only tried this a couple of times on a much smaller scale, during his training. Seeing a larger scale version of it actively shitting on this powerful enemy made him quite happy.
As soon as his Nova Bomb had landed, Isaac was already maneuvering towards the pillar on the left. He took out his Mida Multi-Tool, placed his hand over the barrel summoned a grenades worth of Void Energy and fashioned and overbarrel to cover the original. He took aim at the Gate Lord’s head and began sending Void Energy infused rounds into it.
He could only get off three shots before his fusion ability wore off. As soon as it ended, he picked up his rocket launcher and fired a single shot into the core of the Gate Lord. The Gate Lord, having already taken significant damage from Isaac’s previous attack, was already near his breaking point. As soon as the rocket exploded at its already damaged and weakest point, all of the Gate Lord’s mechanisms both internal and external failed it as its metal frame fell to pieces.
“Whelp, it was fun while it lasted. It’s size may have been much more impressive than the in game version but its strength not so much. Anyways, now that that’s been taken care of, we should keep our comms open, in case one of the others needs help. Until then, I’m going to jack this thing’s eye and then hunt for materials.”
“Right behind you.”
———-
Daniel stood at the edge of a circular ledge looking down into the lair of the Nexus Mind. “Nice! That is a pretty steep drop. Nothing compared to the Hellmouth of course but still it seems to be appropriate for that move Isaac showed me. How did it go again? Oh right, GEERRONIMOOOOO!!!”
