(Day 35)
Isaac made his way towards the Ember Caves to confirm the status of everyone’s missions.
“What’s up, Daniel? Did everything go alright?” Isaac asked, as Daniel approached his position.
“Yep, that Nexus Mind wasn’t even my equal. I squashed him good. Believe it! The guy never had a chance.” (Sorry, I had to.)
“Nice! That’s pretty impressive. Are you sure it wasn’t just a little bit difficult?”
“Ha, positive. I very nearly one shot the thing with my Arc Rail Shot.”
“Ahh, you used that then, huh? I suppose that would end things quickly. Alright, well, now we just need to wait for Koren and Fireteam Ferra to report and then we can update the Vanguard.”
A couple of minutes later, Koren arrived on his sparrow, with the Archon Priest’s head and body in tow. Upon seeing Koren approaching, Isaac and Daniel rushed out to meet him.
“Damn, Koren! You’re a regular badass! I expected you to bring him back but there’s hardly a scratch on him. What did you do, yank his head off?”
“Haha, Yep.” Koren responded.
“Wait, what, seriously? I was only joking. You actually used your hands to pull his head off of his body?” Isaac questioned him.
“I did indeed and I have to say it was quite exhilarating.”
“Holy Shit! That’s freaking amazing! I knew you were working on increasing your strength but that’s some next level shit!”
“Well, I was using my Ward of Destruction to break through his armor, so it wasn’t purely a feat of strength.”
“Ahh, that explains it but, even so, that’s still damn impressive.”
Daniel was just standing there staring at the Archon Priest’s decapitated body. “Ummm…Koren? Remind me never to piss you off, okay.”
“Haha, fear not Daniel. I’m not one who is so easily angered. Also, I would never take out my anger on a teammate.”
“Well, that pretty much wraps things up on our end. Now, we just need to wait for Fireteam Ferra to report back and we can call this trip a success.” Isaac informed them.
Isaac and his teammates waited close to two hours, before they heard from Ferra. On Mars, Ferra’s ghost patched her through to Daniel.
“Hey, Isaac, are you guys done with your missions?” Ferra asked.
“Yep, we’ve been done. Just waiting on you guys to send us the details of your missions.”
“Oh, well in that case, this is the situation. Everyone has completed their missions to the letter. Each one was a complete success. Both Laurel and Bravo secured the weapons and armor schematics used by their foes and they are ready to drop them off near the Stadium, beside the other scraps. Unless there is something else that needs to be done here, we’ve done everything you mentioned and then some and are ready to regroup.”
“Ha, talk about overpowered. Even when we’re by ourselves these guys can’t handle us. Fallen, Vex, Hive, Cabal we’ll crush them all and raise the Guardians and Humanity to new heights…ah, uh, but my ramblings aside, you guys should meetup back at the Tower. I want everyone to give their full reports to Ferra and Ferra you can give your compiled report personally to Ikora.
“Once that’s done, if you guys are still in the mood for more, you could always track down the Fallen Stronghold that was supplying those bases we took out earlier, near the Stadium.
“As for me, I have a little side mission to run, nothing too complicated. Just a quick smash and grab. I’ll meet back up with you guys next week, after we’ve gotten some more training in. Speaking of training, I spoke with the Vanguard and they gave us the go ahead, to use the Stadium to increase our attunement to the Light. Tomorrow, or some time soon after, you guys should try meditating there to see if there are any benefits.
“Well, with all that out of the way, Polter, would you be so kind as to grab that corpse for me?”
Polter moved over to the Archon Priest’s corpse and transmated it to Isaac’s ship.
“Laurel, Bravo, Ferra, Daniel, Koren, you guys did an absolutely fantastic job today and I can’t wait to run more missions with you. See ya later.” Isaac jumped in the air and was transmated to his ship.
Ferra, realizing that Isaac had abruptly cut the connection between them, quickly connected with Koren. Koren and Daniel were both standing there staring at each other with a confused expression, when Ferra’s call came through.
“Hey, Koren, did Isaac just run off all of a sudden? What’s going on over there?”
“Ummm…yeah, he did. It seemed like he had intended to do that from the beginning and was in a hurry. I’m not sure why though.”
“What the hell? Just running off like that as soon as we finish a mission, how rude! I’ll have to talk to him later. Anyway, are you guys ready to head back to the Tower? I want to submit this report, drop off these guns, and then go wreck that Fallen Stronghold.”
“Hell yeah, that Nexus thing was way too easy. Maybe this Fallen Stronghold will be slightly challenging.” Daniel responded.
“Agreed, I’m ready to assault this Fallen Stronghold whenever you are.” Koren agreed.
“Excellent! In that case, we’ll meet you there.” Ferra dismissed them.
———-
Polter had sent all the details of Isaac’s missions to Ferra as they were chatting. He and Isaac were now in Isaac’s ship and heading towards Titan.
“Polter, I think this is it. I think this is the final test that will allow us to actually use the Light Fortress! If it’s not then definitely after I’ve destroyed the Black Garden’s Heart, which is happening tomorrow! I’m so excited I can hardly stand it!”
“Alright, alright, calm down or you’re gonna blow a gasket. You sound like Laurel and Daniel combined into one, right now.”
“Well, it just so happens, dear Polter, that you’re wrong, because I don’t have any gaskets.”
“Uh huh, well, I guess you got me there but you should probably pay attention, unless you want to go for a swim.”
“Dammit!” Isaac grabbed the ship’s controls and brought the ship upwards at a sharp angle just narrowly avoiding crashing into Titan’s Methane Ocean. Isaac was certain that Polter had taken advantage of his inattentiveness and directed the the ship downward and then released control of the ship. Although he couldn’t prove it, he was certain his little ball of scrap metal had skipped developing a healthy sense of humor and went straight to an unhealthy proclivity for extreme practical jokes.
‘Dammit! That little bastard nearly killed me!’ Isaac cursed Polter in his mind.
After their close encounter with liquid methane, they were drawing close to the construction flotillas. Polter directed Isaac to the Solarium and transmated him out, upon arrival.
Isaac, of course, didn’t waste anytime with the Hive here. After developing his Light Body, he no longer required enemies to kill in order to progress in level. As such, he immediately entered stealth mode using Laurel’s modified Vanish.
Progressing quickly through the Arcology’s facilities, Isaac crept into the room housing the CPU, let Polter access and download any external information it had access to, snatched it up, and made his way back out again. He wasn’t able to completely avoid the Hive, since Vanish consumed more Light when being maintained outside of an Arc Activation. However, he only killed as many as he needed to maintain his ability and then continued on his stealthy way.
Isaac exited the Arcology, was transmated to his ship, and then Polter steered them back towards Earth.
Arriving back at the Traveler’s shard, Isaac and Polter entered the Guardian Mind Meld once more. Isaac, with Polter’s help, then organized a compendium of all of the different kinds of spacesh.i.p.s that he had known about both from Destiny and from movies and other media from his old world. He included things like the holographic interface from “Minority Report” and even some details concerning the Doctor, his TARDIS, and his sonic screwdriver just for the heck of it. He also made some personal requests regarding the details of necessary spaces, within the Light Fortress, like a research laboratory, cargo bay, armory, library, training facilities, and living and eating quarters.
Having included everything he felt was relevant and then some, Isaac ended the Mind Meld, Polter converted the information to the appropriate format, and then transferred it into the CPU. Isaac arrived at the control deck and approached the console, with the hemispherical indentation. Isaac placed the Golden Age CPU into the indentation and watched as it was quickly covered in a brilliant light and then disappeared from the console.
The console then transformed into its original shape and its pedestal actually moved itself slightly to the right and began bending and extending, as the console shrunk to a size barely bigger than the handprint indentation. As the pedestal was changing shape, the floor beside it released an oddly shaped radiance The weird shape of a circle with a rectangle attached to it slowly morphed into a one armrest chair that eventually connected with the pedestal that now had clearly taken the shape of the right armrest.
The chair, that was clearly intended for the Captain of the Light Fortress, slowly turned towards Isaac and he could see that the right armrest still had the handprint indentation, while the left armrest had a small hemispherical indentation about the size of a golf ball. Strangely the seat didn’t make any noise as it turned nor was there any noise made by the chair transforming. As Isaac thought about this, it occurred to him, that if this ship was always completely silent and there were never any sounds despite all the activity that might be going on, those who had to live and work on this Light Fortress would quickly become creeped out by the complete lack of sound especially when going into space.
With these thoughts in mind, Isaac approached the Captain’s Chair and sat down. It was quite comfortable despite not looking all that soft and was easily maneuverable. Isaac placed his arms on the arm rests and situated his right hand into the indentation. Once his hand was properly in place, Isaac received an intention from the Traveler and he looked at Polter.
“Polter, you know how you only have your central sphere manifested during our Mind Meld? Well, I think you should replicate that and place your central self into this indentation here.”
“Ummm, okay, I’ll give it a shot.”
Polter dematerialized his casing and sent it in the form of Light into Isaac and then landed his spherical center into the indentation in the left arm rest. As soon as Polter was snugly fit within the indentation, he and Isaac both were transported inside of Isaac’s mindscape and witnessed there an impressive holographic interface that was clearly intended to remodel and flesh out the interior and exterior of the Light Fortress.
“Hooooly F.u.c.k Nuggets! Is this for real? I get to customize the entire Light Fortress however I like!? Oh my god, this is gonna be so f.u.c.k.i.n.g sick!”
Isaac wasted only the time that it took him to complete his gleeful exclamation, before diving into all of the customization options. He wasn’t surprised to find all of the ship types, shapes, and components that he had submitted along with some others that were obviously from this Universe.
Isaac hooked the entire ship up to a modified “Minority Report” type communication system. It utilized the Golden Age CPU to process information, potentially and eventually, from all across the system and filter the most urgent news to the Priority Classification and in front of a commanding officer. The rest would be sorted into different casual or research categories and sent to Guardians who could utilize it either in the field or here in the Light Fortress.
He looked through the customization options for the information regarding the TARDIS. He wasn’t sure whether it would be available or not but when he found it he was ecstatic. He quickly chose to make the inside bigger than the outside and even modified the dimensions of particular bays in order to make the most of this amazing function. The Light Fortress consisted of five floors the central floor that extended all the way from the very back to the tip of the ship. There were then two floors above and below the central floor.
Isaac set the very bottom floor, Level 1-B, as the living quarters and designed them to be somewhat similar to the accommodations in the Tower. He set the second floor, Level 1-A, to have the laboratory, library, a small business district style commerce section, and a public Canteen. The Central Floor consisted of the control deck, some small storage spaces, living quarters for the commanding officers, physical training grounds, and boarding areas. The next floor up, Level 2-A, he set up as meditation chambers and an impressive armory. The next and last floor, Level 2-B, was dedicated entirely to cargo space.
The exterior he modified into an appearance similar to the Orville, only the back end of the main body had no indentation in it and only two propulsion arches were connected to it. He wanted to make his ship look badass but, at the same time, he didn’t want to piss off the Traveler, by wasting a bunch of space on aesthetics instead of making the modifications practical. He wasn’t even sure how the Light Fortress would propel itself but, if it only used Light, all that space used making the propulsion arches would be wasted, until he could find a use for it in the future.
Putting the final touches on his fully customized Light Fortress, Isaac confirmed that everything was ready and was immediately shown another scene from his past life. His character was fighting against the Black Garden’s Heart and, after defeating it, the scene disappeared as it was replaced by the holographic Orville. Isaac opened his eyes and realized that he could see everything around him despite not having left his mindscape. Thinking of this, he also couldn’t remember having closed his eyes to begin with but, as soon as he closed them again, he was back in his mindscape. The Light Orville was still there just the way he had left it.
Isaac now understood that, while he was able to build a customized Light Fortress within his mindscape, he would have to defeat the Black Garden’s Heart before it could become anything more than a hologram.
“Well, Polter, it would seem that we’ve done all we can here. We should go back and prepare for tomorrow’s showdown with the big guy. This heart thing seems to think that it can impede the recovery of our Traveler, without consequences. It clearly needs to be taught a lesson.”
“Agreed. I only wish I had hands of my own, so I could strangle it myself.”
“Haha, well, if I happen to be right about somethings I’ve been thinking about then that might not be completely out of the question. That, of course, is far in the future and assuming that it actually comes to pass. I’m afraid you’ll have to settle for front row seats this time.”
“Wait…what? Seriously? You think it’s possible for me to actually have a set of functional arms?”
“Oh I think you could have your own body, if I’m right, but, as I said, that’s a long way away and hypothetical. It’s best not to worry about it right now. Come on, let’s go.”
“I suppose you’ve got a point but I really hope you’re right about your hypothesis. Come on, I’ll fly us back.”
Isaac and Polter went back to the Tower, filled up on plenty of delectables, went to bed early, and woke up before the sun ready to avenge their Traveler.
