- Volume 1 Chapter 23 The Hunt For White October
(Day 37)
After Isaac was transmated into his ship, he made his way over to the Stadium. As soon as the Light Fortress came into view, they could already see that it had increased in size. It was now over seven hundred meters tall and just short of four hundred meters at its base.
Isaac landed in his usual spot, entered the Light Fortress, and made his way back to Captain’s Chair. Isaac and Polter both assumed their positions and entered Isaac’s mindscape once again. The Light Orville was still there just as it had been and so Isaac tried once again to confirm it. This time the customization display and the Light Orville were both removed from Isaac’s mindscape.
Isaac opened his eyes and witnessed everything around him shining with a magnificent radiance. Eventually, the surrounding radiance began to dim and the consoles, that once had manual controls, were revealed now with the holographic interfaces that Isaac had chosen.
“Sweet! Let’s go check out the rest of the ship, Polter!” Isaac said, as he got up from the Captain’s Chair and exited the Control Deck.
Isaac spent the next three hours walking around through each room on each level to make sure there were no problems. Having made sure that everything was the way he wanted it to be, Isaac returned to his Captain’s Chair and placed his hand once more into the indentation. As soon as his hand was in place, Isaac was shown yet another scene from his past life.
His character was on Nessus and making its way towards its first encounter with Failsafe. Once his character entered the Exodus Black and began conversing with Failsafe, the scene ended. As soon as the scene ended, the newly renovated Light Fortress began to hum. It was the first time Isaac had heard the Light Fortress make any noise.
As the humming continued, the Light Fortress trembled ever so slightly and three holographic screens containing the flight controls for the fortress appeared before him.
Isaac looked at this scene and grinned. “Nice! Looks like we’re not going to have to figure out all the ins and outs of this ship all by ourselves, Polter. Now, to Nessus and beyond!” Isaac exclaimed only half seriously, as he activated the controls, launching the massive ship into the upper atmosphere and leaving the residents of the Farm completely dumbfounded.
Everyone, who bore witness to this event, was at an absolute loss to explain what they were seeing. Among those witnesses, was a certain Exo Hunter.

(Day 37)
“Cayde, could I speak to you for a moment?” Ikora asked.
“Of course. Anything for my favorite Warlock. What’s on your mind, Ikora?” Cayde responded.
“Well, I’ve just witnessed something…actually, you know what? I think it might be easier to just show you.”
Ikora replayed all the relevant information, concerning Isaac’s mysterious behavior, starting with Ferra reporting his hasty departure and moving on to receiving Polter’s pseudo-update and then the rest. After seeing all this, Cayde addressed Ikora.
“Yeah, it’s definitely fishy alright but doesn’t this seem like a job for your Hidden? What’s it got to do with me?”
“I could task them with this but the Hidden’s primary focus is on scouting enemy intel not spying on fellow Guardians. Isaac has done entirely too much for both the City and us Guardians too even think about classifying him as an enemy. However, as his direct superior, I need to make sure that whatever he’s hiding isn’t something that’s potentially over his head.
“I always perceived Isaac as being calm and rational most of the time or at least when it counts but lately he seems to have become quite brash and I’m not certain what has brought this on. I suspect it may have something to do with whatever he’s hiding so I’m making a personal request. Cayde, will you please help me discover what Isaac is hiding and report back to me anything you find?”
“Well, far be it from me to turn down a friend in need, especially if it gets me out of this Tower. Consider it done, Ikora. Do you know where he is right now?”
“Thank you, Cayde. I really appreciate this. Isaac just finished speaking with Ferra near the Transmat Bay and, if I’m not mistaken, he should be heading to the hangar as we speak. You should hurry before he takes off.”
———-
(Day 37)
Cayde followed Isaac’s ship out of the City, in order to find out what all the hubbub was about. He had to admit even he was a bit curious about what Isaac might be hiding.
After about twenty minutes of flight later, Cayde could see Isaac’s ship beginning to descend and a massive white pillar of some on the ground. Isaac seemed to be heading towards that white pillar, so Cayde decided to set down where he was and close the rest of the distance on his sparrow.
As he got closer to the white pillar he not only could see that it wasn’t a pillar but he could also sense massive amounts the Traveler’s Light inside of it. As the details of the structure came into view, he couldn’t help but think it looked like some kind of fortress.
As Cayde was getting steadily closer and wondering what on Earth this thing could be, he suddenly brought his sparrow to a complete stop. The mysterious white fortress was surrounded in a brilliant white light. The light surrounding the fortress began to shift and change. The light slowly faded away revealing a completely new structure that looked remarkably similar to some type of advanced spacecraft.
Looking at this remarkable and unexpected sight, Cayde couldn’t help but be stunned by such a thing. Soon after the fortress transformed, the structure emitted a soft hum and then slowly began to rise up off of the ground. Cayde was still amazed at what he was witnessing but knew that if he didn’t hurry he would lose his quarry.
“Sundance, transmat now!”
“Right, I’m on it.” As soon as Cayde’s ship arrived, Sundance transmated him up and they set off after the Light Fortress that had Isaac’s ship trailing behind it.

(Day 37)
Isaac brought the Light Fortress into Nessus’ atmosphere and guided it towards the location of the Exodus Black. Soon the Light Fortress was hovering directly over the Exodus Black and Isaac manipulated one of the screens in front of him. This screen showed him the scene directly below the Light Fortress.
As he watched, Isaac witnessed a conical analyzing beam of Light scanning the Exodus Black. When the conical beam of Light disappeared, a straight hacking beam of Light was then sent into the Exodus Black.
Once the beam disappeared, the humming of the Light Fortress grew a bit louder for a few seconds, before calming down. Just as Isaac was wondering what he should do, if anything, another screen popped up in front of his face. This screen portrayed an extremely pale and beautiful Human female with platinum blonde hair and solid white oracle eyes.
“Greetings, Isaac.” Said the pale blonde woman. “I’m the ship AI formerly known as Failsafe. The power of the Traveler extricated Failsafe from her ship, fixed her personality flaws, and modified her to suit the purposes of the Light Fortress. This, of course, resulted in the AI you are interacting with now. I am currently nameless but my name will automatically default to Failsafe, unless you give me another. Would you like to give me a new name?”
A broad smile crept across Isaac’s face, after hearing the AI’s words. ‘Sick! I get to name the AI too! Hell yeah!’
“Ummm, yeah I’ll give you a name but I’ll need to think a bit. I wasn’t prepared for this, so give me a sec.”
“Not a problem. Please take your time.”
They sat there in silence for several minutes as Isaac tried to think of a perfect name for his new ship AI.
“Ha, I’ve got. From now on your name will be Emcee (Ihm-see,basically MC).”
“Very well, Isaac. I shall now respond only to the name Emcee. Now that I’ve been named, if there is anything you need to know regarding the sh.i.p.s operation, maintenance, or capabilities, you can ask me. Also, because I can control every part of the ship, if you require flight assistance or perhaps a remote activation of one of the sh.i.p.s functions, I can also be relied on for that as well. My communications array has been linked directly to your ghost, so you can contact me from practically anywhere. With all that being said, is there currently anything that you’d like my assistance with?”
“Hmmm…what all do you know about me and how much do you know about this solar system and its current situation?”
“The Traveler endowed me with all of the knowledge that you sent to it via Polter. Also, the Traveler directly copied all of Polter’s memories and data storage and downloaded them into the ship’s databanks. At this point, I’m not only the Light Fortress’ AI I’m also your second ghost, especially since you’re the only recognized Captain of the Light Fortress. So in short I know everything that you and Polter know. I even know that Polter really doesn’t like his name.”
“What?! Polter, is this true? You don’t like your name! How come you never said anything?”
“Well, at first I always thought you were weird and I really didn’t want to argue with you anymore than we already did. Then, after the first Mind Meld, it just didn’t seem like that big of a deal. But, yeah, Polter is a really lame name.”
“What the…wait a minute, do you even know where that name is from?”
“No but I doubt it’s anything cool.”
“Not anything cool, dude, it comes from Poltergeist. I don’t know about people in this world’s past but where I’m from lots of people believed that Human souls persisted after death and some would travel to a realm specifically for the deceased. Some of the souls, however, would have lingering baggage preventing them from being able to move on and these souls that stayed among the living were called ghosts. Some of these ghosts were special cases able to interact with the physical world and even possess the bodies of the living. Those special cases were referred to as Poltergeists. So, do you still think your name is stupid?”
“Hmmm…I’ve never heard anything about these other types of ghosts but I suppose that’s not so bad. If I had known from the start, I might even say it’s fitting but you’re probably the only person alive who knows about that stuff. So to everyone else Polter just sounds lame.”
“Ugh, whatever, that’s not important right now. We’ll talk about this some other time. Emcee, can you speak with the Traveler?”
“In a certain manner. I can communicate with the Traveler in the same way you do but as for carrying on a conversation? No I can’t. I’m not sure that anyone can.”
“I see, that’s more or less what I expected. Anyways, for now I think we should head back to the EDZ. Now that the Light Fortress is fully functional, I’ll eventually start my own Guardian Order, establish a base on another planet, and start searching for the Traveler’s other shards. Of course, I’m still new to not only this world but also to being a Guardian. I need to finish my training, reach level forty, and scope out the political environment in and around the City.
“Oh, and one more thing, Emcee. You’re aware of the remains of the Fallen that are currently resting beside your previous location, correct?”
“Yes, I’m aware of them. What did you have in mind?”
“Well, if it’s at all possible, I’d like you to try and rebuild them to serve the Guardians. I’d like to set them as guards around the perimeter of the Farm and if that’s successful we can either replicate them or get more remains. Does that sound like something you can do, Emcee?”
“It certainly is. It would, of course, mean putting the Light Fortress out of commission for a short period, from using up the amount of Light required for that. However, if you’re going to be focusing on your training and won’t need the Light Fortress for a while, that shouldn’t be a problem. I’ll fix them up as soon as we return.”
“Haha, Sweet! In that case, let’s hit the space, Ace. Set course for Earth, Emcee. I’m sure it’s already night time near the Tower. I’m going to exercise a bit, get a couple more hours of sleep, and then sort out my Exotic Gear choices. Oh, before I forget, let’s get my ship into the hold so it’s not just dragging along back there.”
“Very well, Captain Isaac. Setting a course for Earth. We’ll depart as soon as your ship is secured.”
———-
(Day 37)
Cayde was lucky that Isaac still had his old beat up Arcadian Jump Ship or else he might have detected him scanning his ship, to determine their jump destination. The place that the Light Fortress stopped at on Nessus had plenty of hills, so Cayde posted up on top of one and scouted his quarry with a sniper rifle.
As he watched the Light Fortress begin to take off again, he scratched his head in confusion. ‘What the frick just happened? They came all the way out here, parked above an old crashed colony ship for about thirty minutes, and then flew away again? This doesn’t make any sense. Surely they couldn’t have done whatever they came here for in the less than a minute that they were out of my sight. Of course, now that Isaac’s ship is inside the larger one, I can’t risk scanning them.’_”Damn! This is so confusing! I have no idea what’s going on here! Sundance, do you know what’s going on here?”
“Nope, not a clue. I know that ship is overflowing with the Traveler’s Light but I’m sure you already knew that.”
“Yes, yes, I did. Well, there’s really no helping it then. All I can do now is check out that colony ship and then report back to Ikora. Let’s go, Sundance!”
“Right behind you.”
———-
(Day 38)
Isaac awoke the next morning feeling far more refreshed than yesterday. He ran through his morning routine, threw back some breakfast, and went back to his room to consider his Exotic Gear options.
“Polter, I’ve been meaning to ask you, did they have some big to do about the Traveler beginning to heal like in the game, while I was asleep yesterday?”
“Yep, it was literally a word for word reenactment. The only thing different was you not being on top of the Tower to receive the Exo Stranger’s pulse rifle. Although, unless it’s dramatically different from the in game version I’m not sure why you’d even want it. Also, that bit of the game seemed a bit contrived. Why would she give you her own weapon considering how little you know about each other? Unless it was an inferior weapon in which case, why would she think that you would need it or want it? Oh well, I guess we’ll find out if and when she contacts us again.”
“Yeah, I would have to agree with that assessment. I’m not particularly worried about that rifle or even her for that matter. If she decides to identify herself or actually give us some useful information, then I suppose I could work with her but I’m not gonna hold my breath over it. With that being said, let’s sort out these Exotic Choices. I want to pick my armor and weapon and then pick an Exotic Weapon for each of my teammates.”
Isaac and Polter, once again, entered Isaac’s mindscape and sorted through all the available options, until they had a complete list of seven Exotic Weapons and the Exotic Helmet Nazerick’s sin.
Isaac made his way over to Banshee’s workshop and put in his request. Banshee was a bit stunned at the number of Exotics he was ordering but suspected that something like this might happen, whenever Ikora told him about the deal he was offered.
Isaac had once again asked for modifications of his Exotics. He requested that Nazerick’s Sin be modified to have the effects of The Ram, while maintaining as much of its original effects as possible.
Isaac wanted his Void Blades upgraded to Exotics, by giving them Dark Drinker’s damage boost when utilizing both blades in a multiple 360 spin slash. The 360 buff would be a synergy ability, while the aesthetics would make them slightly shorter and thinner Black Talons with the same ability as a Black Talon. Isaac also ordered a modified Invective, with a barrel as long as the Universal Remote and that fired slugs like the Chaperone, that he called the Unassailable Chaperone.
He then ordered a Sweet Business for Koren, a Bad Juju for Ferra, a Hawkmoon for Daniel, a Trinity Ghoul for Laurel, and a Riskrunner for Bravo.
After Banshee had estimated how much time it would take him to finish all those modifications, he told Isaac that, if he came back in a month, he might be finished by then. Isaac, of course, had expected this much and was that bothered by the wait.
Once all his gear requests had been confirmed, Isaac made his way to see Ikora, about progressing down the Warlock’s path.
