- Volume 1 Chapter 28 Dayum They Didn't See That Shit Coming
(The Light Fortress: Day 99)
The day after defeating Atheon, Isaac felt an enormous sense of relief. Even though he knew that many more dangerous events would occur in the future, he also knew that the Vanguard was already aware of the situation and that they would contact him the moment they caught wind of Crota’s movements.
Isaac and his fireteam had already received their rewards for defeating Atheon and so now it was time to start the hunt for the rest of the Traveler’s shards.
“Emcee, what’s the status on the other shards of the Traveler? Do you have any ideas about where they might be?” Isaac asked the Light Fortress’ AI.
“I do. I knew that you would be searching for them, once you completed your training, and so I’ve been scanning the Earth’s surface trying to locate them. I’ve managed to find twelve, here on Earth, but that’s far from all of them. I may have missed some smaller ones, here on Earth, but I’m certain that some of the shards are on other planets.”
“On other planets? How in the world did they get onto other planets? Also, if some ended up on other planets, doesn’t that mean that others could be lost in space?”
“Well, whatever incident that caused the Traveler’s current condition would have had to have been a display of massive power. As such, it’s not really surprising that some of the shards managed to exit the atmosphere and, yes, I’m certain that some of the smaller shards are probably lost in space.”
“That’s unfortunate but is it possible that the Traveler can still be fully recovered, without those lost shards?”
“Certainly, the Traveler is now free from the effects of both the Hive’s ritual and the interference from the Black Heart. All that is needed is time and all of the Traveler’s wounds would be healed even without you retrieving the shards.”
“That’s good to hear. In that case, set a course for the closest shard. I want to at least find fifteen shards before I do anything else.”
“As you command, Captain. A course has been set and we should be there momentarily.”
Isaac went to each location, indicated by Emcee, and the Light Fortress absorbed each shard in turn. Many of the shards were even more massive than the original Light Fortress with two of them being about the same size and three being slightly smaller, as such its size increased by ten fold, after absorbing all six shards.
“Emcee, do you think there are any more shards on the moon?”
“It seems unlikely. If there were any more shards on the moon, the Hive would likely know of its existence and would have already begun another ritual. We can stop by and check but I highly doubt it.”
“That’s what I was thinking as well. Alright, let’s go do a quick scan of the moon and then head to Mars.”
As they suspected, the scans of the moon didn’t reveal any shards there and so they headed towards Mars. Mars luckily had five more shards and Isaac decided to snatch up all of them and then save the others for later.
Once all seventeen shards had been collected, the Light Fortress was now twelve times larger than its original size. Isaac flew the Light Fortress back to Earth, over to the Last City, and entered stealth mode. The entire Light Fortress was completely and perfectly silent and invisible.
Isaac maneuvered the Light Fortress towards the Traveler, until it was positioned directly underneath its damaged section. He then raised the ship upwards into the center of the Traveler. As he looked around at the interior of the Traveler, he noticed that aside from some interesting geometric patterns here and there, the unnatural radiance, and the density of the surrounding Light, there wasn’t much difference from the outside. This was a bit disappointing but Isaac set aside that disappointment and gave Emcee the go ahead to initiate the transfer. Conical beams of Light immediately began issuing forth from every part of the Light Fortress.
Those Guardians and citizens who happened to be looking at the Traveler at that moment witnessed a truly unexpected event and began alerting others to the event. The cracks on the underside of the Traveler began to shift and reform, until the bottom edge of each piece stopped at the same distance from the Traveler’s hypothetical bottom. The edge of the damaged portion of the Traveler now formed an incomplete circle around its lower portion.
At the same time that the bottom of the the Traveler’s damaged parts were being reformed, the topmost portion of the damage was rapidly being filled in. In less than five minutes, the damaged portion of the Traveler was repositioned and isolated at the very bottom of its body and everything above that exposed section was wholly intact.
Isaac made his way back outside of the Traveler to witness the Light Fortress’ handiwork. The Traveler was already a glorious sight to behold but now it looked almost formidable, like a force to be reckoned with, despite being in the shape of a pingpong ball with a bit sliced off the end. ‘Hopefully, it won’t require something as drastic as Ghaul’s invasion to rouse it from its slumber.’ Isaac thought. He couldn’t help but smile, while looking at the Traveler’s newly repaired body.
After admiring the Traveler for a bit longer, Isaac received a call from Ikora. “Isaac, where are you right now?”
“You won’t be able to see me but I’m inside the Light Fortress right now. I just came from inside the Traveler, after hunting shards all day.”
“Isaac…are you telling me that this development is your doing? You actually found other shards of the Traveler?”
“Yep, I haven’t found all of them and that might actually be impossible but I’ll try and find as many as I can at some point. However, I do have some other business to take care of today so, unless you have something important for me…?”
“Oh yes, of course, thank you Isaac. Take care and I’ll see you later.”
“Later, Ikora.”
“So, Emcee, you should be able to transform my ship into something similar to those Fallen machines, right?” Isaac asked.
“Of course, would you like me to bring up the customization panel?”
“Haha, please do, Emcee, please do and then set a course for the Waking Ruins on Venus.”
Isaac began going through the customization options for his ship as Emcee guided the Light Fortress towards Venus. He had deliberately left the Light Fortress with more of the Traveler’s mass than it originally had, in order to upgrade his ship and establish the Light Fortress as a full fledged base of operations.
Isaac chose the same Whovian option that he placed on the Light Fortress and made the ship’s shape similar to that of the Hildian Seeker. After making sure there was plenty of cargo space, weapons, and that the engines were all replaced by designs taken from the Golden Age CPU, Isaac confirmed the design and waited for their arrival on Venus.
After arriving at the Waking Ruins, Isaac got into his newly refashioned ship and went for a little test drive around the planet. Satisfied with its performance, he reboarded the Light Fortress and addressed Emcee.
“Emcee, I have something that I want you to try even if you don’t think you can do it. At least try it and then tell me what went wrong. Since you have all of mine and Wraitheon’s memories, you should be familiar with Kabr, correct?”
“Correct. I’m familiar with him and the wound he made in the Vault that made your fireteam’s success possible.”
“Good. Then tell me if it’s possible for you to use that wound, within the Vault, to transfer half of this ship’s mass into the Throne of Glass and establish a stronghold, within the Vex network? The network breach doesn’t have to be immediate, so if we have to do some research on them first, as long as we can establish a defensible base there then that will be enough. We have most of Atheon’s remains and really good analysis scans from the Templar, so if you can manage to replicate even a fraction of their capabilities that should suffice.”
“That is an intriguing proposition, Captain. Let’s see what these scans are like? Wraitheon, if you would?” Emcee requested, to which Wraitheon responded by assuming his position at the Captain’s chair.
“Hmmm…yes, these really are excellent scans and you even have Atheon’s intact core, even if a bit damaged. No, this isn’t impossible but it will take quite a bit of research and time as you suggested. Even with all the data and parts you managed to recover, being able to replicate Atheon, the Templar, their capabilities within the network, and then use them to hijack the system for ourselves is still a monumental task.
“You’ve done quite well to have accomplished this much but you’re are reaching quite high and such lofty goals are not easily attained. Descend into the Vault and enter the wound within the the Templar’s Well. I should be able to connect with you there and analyze the wound. Once I’m connected, I should be able to force the Relic to appear if it’s not there already.
“Before you leave, take the device that I’m currently sending to the Control Deck’s replicator. It is an attachment that should provide me with a direct connection to the Relic itself. Take the Relic into the Throne of Glass and I should be able to create a similar wound inside of it. Once that second wound appears, I can then proceed with the establishing of a physical base at the very least.”
“F.u.c.k yeah! That’s what I’m talking about! Wraitheon, damn that really is a cool name isn’t it, grab that Relic attachment and let’s get down there.”
“Yes and yes.” Wraitheon responded.
Isaac and Wraitheon made their way down into the Templar’s Well slaying Vex as they went. They followed Emcee’s instructions, by retrieving the Relic and placing the attachment on to it. With the Relic in hand, they then snatched up a few pieces of the Templar that were still there and went once more into the Throne of Glass and allowed Emcee to work her magic.
“Alright, I have successfully established a link with the Relic. Stand in the middle of the throne and let me see what I can do.” Emcee directed him.
Isaac went towards the massive triangular doorway at the back of the room and stood in the middle of the structure.
“Whenever I give you the first go ahead, use the Relics shielding ability. Then on my second signal use the Relics super ability but modify it to blast out in a spherical pulse around you.”
“Got it! Let’s do this!” Isaac responded.
Isaac stood with the Relic at the ready and popped the shield, once Emcee gave the signal. As soon as the shield was up, Isaac could see and feel points of Light appearing beneath his feet. There were only a few at first but they quickly multiplied, until the entire area inside the shield was emitting an aura of Light exactly like the wound in the Templar’s Well.
Emcee then gave the second signal and Isaac unleashed all of the remaining Light as one massive spherical pulse that radiated outwards across the entire throne room. Every place that the Light Pulse touched was instantly transformed, into the same mysterious material that constituted the Traveler and the Light Fortress. The Light Wound was still there but seemed much less impressive now that it’s surroundings had been so dramatically altered.
“Very good. Now that that’s done, step out of the Light Wound and place the Relic inside of it.”
Isaac did as instructed and soon the Light Wound expanded to three times its normal size and then Atheon, Time’s Conflux materialized inside.
“Umm…Emcee, I thought you said…”
“Yes, I did. This is simply a basic reconstruction that’s been disconnected from the Vex network and reconfigured just enough to be able to walk around and fire the Torch Hammer you recovered at any other Vex that come here. Make room for him to leave the wound. I’ve done the same with the Templar and I’m sending it through now.”
“Ahh, I see.” Isaac said as he made room for the Atheon puppet. “Thanks for that. I’ll be able to rest easy knowing that leaving this place alone won’t be sending an invitation for the Vex to mount an immediate retaliation. Once we have sufficient manpower to properly defend it, we might even be able to expand outwards. This Light Wound allows this place to draw in Light like the other shards, right?”
“Yes. As long as this Light Wound remains, the reconfigured shard, that forms your base’s infrastructure, will continue to absorb Light, that can either strengthen or reconstitute already existing infrastructure or expand the base’s area with new infrastructure.” Emcee explained, as the Templar puppet appeared and began patrolling the area.
“Haha, Sweet! Well, that seems to be about all we can do here, except modify the interior to suit our needs. Emcee, can I get a customization panel, please?”
“Certainly, Captain.” Emcee confirmed, as several holographic panels appeared above the Relic.
Isaac spent about thirty minutes pouring over the available options and adjusting each room, to ensure that everything an entirely separate order of Guardians would need to be self sufficient and successful was present. After confirming his choices, watching the room transform, and then visually inspecting everything he hoped back into his now much smaller Light Fortress and flew back to the EDZ.
Isaac parked the Light Fortress back in its usual spot near the farm and then flew his newfangled ship, that he called “Flight of the Photon,” back to the Tower.
Isaac took the rest of the day off, with the exception of some light exercising, and made plans to do a little exploring of the city tomorrow.
