- Volume 2 Chapter 22 Great Forest Of Waldestein
A/N : Scheduled chapter of the week.
_ _ _ _ _ _ _
The great forest of Waldestein is located on the western side of the Northern subcontinent, and separates the rest of its landmass from the ocean in the west. It covers almost a fourth of the entire subcontinent, and is home to countless monsters and terrifying magical beasts. These creatures coupled with the thick foliage and difficult to cross terrain make the region very dangerous for people to cross. Extending from the very north to all the way down in the south, this forest is a natural barrier to Reinglief, preventing access to the trading routes to the Atlas continent. The only place where traders from the Atlas continent can make land to trade is the southern coasts of the subcontinent, where the country of Solia is. There are also countless tales of treasures hidden within the vast expanse of this forest, and countless people have tried their luck in hopes of finding such treasures. But for the most of them, the forest became their final resting place. It is said that even many saint level powerhouses went into these forest to look for treasures or to temper themselves and got buried inside, becoming nourishment for the forest; it could not even be imagined as to what horrors lay inside.
“So, this is the great forest huh”
A man was walking in the very outer reaches of the forest. The man was dressed in a Black trench coat which reached till just below the knees and its large collar was raised. It had silver designs woven along the seams, cuffs and collar. He was a wearing a type of armour and a slender sword was hanging from his waist, slightly visible through the open trench coat. The man appeared to be less than 20 years old and was very handsome; he had a slightly androgynous charm which attracted both the s.e.xes. Yet all that charm was shadowed by the deadpan and indifferent expression on his face, as if he had no emotions. This man was none other than Add or as he was known in this world; Adolf Kaiser Weismann. It had now been over 5 years since he had arrived on Iseria. Over these years, his appearance had remained more or less the same. Only his height had increased a little, and his face had become slightly more mature. Aside from that, everything else was the exact same as before, the cold heterochromatic eyes, and the silky black hair with the white streaks which made him look more mature, and skin even females would envy. The metallic boots crushed the leaves and twigs as he walked on, entering deeper into the forest.
The left arm of his coat had a red band with the symbol of a black shield on which there was a white rifle, facing downwards with a helmet hanging on top of the stock. The shoulders of his coat also had epaulettes, made of a thin silver plate with intricate lines of design engraved on its surface. There was also the iconic hammer and sickle attached on one end and a large star on the other, both made of gold. The silver plate rested on a red piece of cloth; this was the shoulder strap which could only be worn by a single person: The Marshal of the Soviet Union, the supreme leader of the soviet armed forces. A lot of things had changed in his territory, and he had made a lot of progress. However, his reason for coming to this dangerous forest x this time was a rather personal one. He was visiting Waldestein for a particular purpose. After 5 long years, he had finally grinded to level 400, and after all this time the system had issued a mission which he had been waiting for a long time;

Even though he had levelled up a lot during this time, he was still unable to use mana. He had asked the system for a way many times, but always got the same response “Level Is Not Enough”. So when he finally got the quest, he was overjoyed, almost. The requirements, however were a bit hard, to gather the Monster cores of magical beasts was by no means an easy task. These were crystals which were found inside a magical beast’s body, and it was where it stored all its mana. The stronger the beast, the more mana its core can store. These cores were also high in demand among humans and other races, and they could be used as batteries to store mana to use when needed. Getting them was very difficult, so they were very expensive.
It should be mentioned that monsters that could not use magic, still were within the scope of logic, they could only be as strong and deadly as the laws of science allowed. However, the magical beasts were a completely different category of creatures. They had the perfect tool to bend the laws of science, mana. It was not uncommon to find a magical beast which was the size of a cat, yet was tens of times stronger and deadlier than a bear. Some could even use spells, and even higher ranks could also take humanoid forms in order to mingle with other races. Over the years, he had fought a lot of monsters in the great Northern ranges; however, he had never encountered a magical beast since there were few magical beasts in those harsh mountains and he had never gone into the very depth of those mountains; the areas where those magical beasts lived. So it was his first time going against them, as such he was very cautious; the weapons and amour he was using proved that clearly.

Item: TSAR-77E Pulse Rifle (Grade: Epic)
Description: The TSAR-77E is a pulse action, air cooled assault rifle. This weapon uses high voltage pulses of electricity to fire its bullets at extreme speeds. The momentum generated, along with the bullets made from compressed-superheated-alloy blends, enable these bullets to penetrate some of the toughest armours of its generation. The weapon is powered by a Hydrogen fuel cell which provides a standard usage life of 6 months. It is chambered in a 10x50mm case-less cartridge and fires Armour piercing bullets as a standard. It has a magazine capacity of 100 rounds. It uses a rotating breech electronic pulse action, with a cyclic fire rate of 900 rounds per minute. The rifle can also attach a gas operated electronic primed 30x71mm grenade launcher under the barrel, with a firing rate of 15 rounds per minute and a magazine capacity of 4+1 shots.
TSAR-77E is constructed largely from an ultra-light alloy precision metal stampings, with a titanium aluminium alloy outer casing and high-impact, temperature resistant plastics for many of its internal parts. It is fully sealed against external corrosion factors, dirt and moisture and its electronics are hardened against electromagnetic radiation. With the magazine and other equipment attached, it weighs in at around 8 kilos.
Firing range:
Effective: 500 metres
Maximum: 1500 metres
Price: 400,000 CP

All these items were from an advanced human civilization in another alternate universe, or so the System stated. Their prices were also quite high, but given the power and protection they had, the price was reasonable. The new katana was also a much stronger than the initial alloy katana he had bought, which had been snapped in half during a fight with a monster.
The TSAR-77E was a new generation of rifles, which had a sleek and flat design. It was designed as am alterative to bulky assault rifles. As technology advanced, assault rifles needed to be more deadly to cope with the better armours being produced, there were only two things that could be done to make a rifle stronger, first increase its calibre and second make the propellant more explosive. But these also had their limits and soon, regular rifles reached the limits of their size and power. You could only make them so big before they reached the class of auto cannons and were impossible to use by a single person. This gun however, eliminated the need of gunpowder, working like a miniature rail-gun, and could be held by single person just like a regular assault rifle, but was much more powerful and compact. Add had already tested it against many monsters, and it had slaughtered many A ranks with relative ease. The only short comings with it were the hefty price of its ammunition, and the frequent overheating of the weapon.
The SW-CTL was a body armour which as designed especially to withstand weapons like the TSAR-77E. It covered the entire body, only exposing the neck the face and the joints. It was thin and reasonably bulky for its level of protection, and with some add on components, it was almost completely resistant to most small calibre weapons of its time. Although the armour could stop pulse rifle bullets, the shock would still hurt the human behind it, but to Add who had invested quite a lot into vitality and stamina, dealing with blunt trauma was still manageable and better than getting pierced by a sword or the claws of some monster.
And since he had a liking to black colours, he had purchased all of these items in the same colour. Coupled with the black trench coat, he was literally a MIB. Armed and armoured, he had arrived to complete this mission, so that he could finally use mana. And even before he had reached near the actual forest, monsters had been popping up. These were all A and B ranked monsters, but they could only live outside and dared not venture inside the forest, for they would just become easy pickings for the horrors residing there. They were not a threat to Add who killed the poor creatures even before they could reach near him. His stats were now quite high, and he estimated that he had the physical power of a Rank 8 warrior, and with his weapons and tactics, dealing with rank 9 warriors should not be a problem as well. Too bad he rarely came across strong individuals in these 5 years, since his territory was after all the farthest from other civilizations. For mages however, he was not sure. They had all sorts of spells and weird abilities which made them quite unpredictable. His status now looked like this:

He had not added a lot of skills since the skill points were limited. The system did sell skill points, but they were a million CP for one skill point, which he was currently unwilling to spend. Interestingly, after he had maxed out the [Accelerated Healing] skill had been replaced by the next skill in the skill tree [Regeneration]. There were a few skills he did buy as well and one he got from a mission reward.

He ventured for days on the outer areas of the forest, where he encountered many monsters and some Knight Class magical beasts. Low raking magical beasts usually were unable to use spells, but they had huge strength and vitality thanks to the high amounts of mana they possessed and could actively use. He encountered many Slimes in this region. Slime was a creature little more than a blob of sticky mucus that could move. They had a tiny monster core which was the centre of their very being, but were placed among the category of E rank monsters, since their cores had so little magic that it was negligible. They liked wet and warm areas, and Waldestein which was a lush rainforest was very ideal for them. Aside from those there were actual magical beasts like a [Shadow Panther] which was a large feline that hunted in the night. It used its mana to blend with the shadows, making it very hard to spot. There was also the [Mad Beardog], a large creature which had the body shaped like a dog and had the head and forelimbs resembling a bear. It had had extremely strong body with fur so tough even normal grenades had no effect on it. There were also creepy lizards which spewed poison and violent monkeys that crave for flesh. Within a few days Add had realised how well this place deserved its fame. But then, when he was sure that he had adapted to this forest, he chanced upon a group of creatures which even he did not feel like messing with.
Spiders. Thousands of spiders.
He was just walking through a region of tall trees which would put the redwoods back on Earth to shame, when he felt that he was being watched by something. With his maxed out perception skill, he quickly found out the things that were gazing at him like he was some tasty snack, and when he used the encyclopaedia; which he had updated using hundreds of thousands of CP) his face became frosty in an instant. He creatures were giant spiders, each the size of a large dog with long spindly legs and large fangs dripping poison. They stared at him with their beady eyes and within moments he was surrounded by them, they were in the bushes, on the ground and also up in the trees. But they were not just any ordinary tarantula. These were the Emerald bellied Huntsman spiders whose appearance could cause heart attacks in people with arachnophobia. There were many monstrous spiders on Iseria, Add had already crossed paths with a few of them, from freakishly giant tarantulas that ate bears for breakfast to tiny walking canisters of concentrated potassium cyanide, but these things gave him a headache just by reading their information.
The Emerald bellied Huntsman spiders were called so because of their green coloured bellies, while the rest of their bodies were pitch black. These spiders did weave webs, but not those traditional beautiful nets to catch insects, nor those fine carpet like webs to sense vibrations, no, these spiders were hyper active hunters who silently crept through the bushes and trees looking for prey. And if an unfortunate creature caught their eyes, they wove a small sticky net carried it with their feet and pounced down on their prey in a surprise attack, but they did it together like a pack of wolves and after catching the prey, they wove a silk coffin for those poor souls and liquefying them into a smoothie with their poison. They were A ranked monsters and their stealth abilities were exceptional, as they had managed to evade Add’s perception for quite some time.
“Bloody Urod.”
As he cursed at this situation, the spiders pounced towards him. Add responded with HE grenades and made a run for his life. The spiders individually were not a threat; heck even a hundred of them was not a problem. But there were literally thousands of them here and he was being surrounded. No matter how powerful weapons he had, there was also an undeniable might in numbers. If he got surrounded by these spiders, he would be in a very precarious situation. He kept retreating while throwing grenades and shooting any spiders which popped up before him. However the spiders were tougher than he expected, even the powerful grenades which could blow up a small bunker could only kill a few dozens of them at a time. Aside from making the spiders more aggressive it did not make any significant reduction to their ever increasing numbers. Of course he had eve powerful explosives like the water bomb, but he needed to open some distance between himself and the spiders. Despite his speed which was already very high, the spiders were able to keep up with him and he could not run any faster.
Suddenly, with a loud thud, a large figure dropped from the trees some distance away from where Add was. As soon as the figure appeared, the spiders stopped their attacks and instead angrily hissed towards Add while maintaining a safe distance. The later also stopped, as he narrowed his eyes to look at the new arrival with caution. The figure had a rather unique appearance, and it appeared as if all the spiders respected and feared it.
“An Arachne is it”
An Arachne is a female magical beast belonging to the King class. A new born Arachne was already a General class, and some could even reach the Emperor class. According to legends, the Arachne race came into existence eons ago, from a high elf called Arachne. Legend has it that Arachne was the most beautiful High elf to be ever born, so beautiful that even the gods envied her beauty. She was a kind and benevolent lady who also had an unparallel talent for weaving. One day, Iphion the goddess of weaving who envied her beauty, came to challenge Arachne to a weaving contest. Arachne accepted her challenge and though in the beginning the two were equally matched, in the end, Arachne won. The goddess was furious over her defeat and it was then that her eyes fell upon a spider crawling on a leaf. Filled with malice, she used her powers and cursed Arachne to become an abomination which everyone would loathe and shun. And thus the beautiful elf became a half spider monstrosity, and was exiled by her kin to live in the wild, hated by all those who saw her. Before her exile, she swore revenge upon the gods, but was never able to succeed. It was from her that the Arachne race began and to this day, they are loathed and shunned by almost all the races.
The Arachne had the upper body of an elf, but from below the waist she had the lower body of a spider. They preferred to live in caves and deep forests, and were predominantly carnivorous, although they could also eat vegetarian foods such as fruits. They were described to be highly intelligent, on par with any sentient race and were inherently bold, ferocious and l.u.s.tful. They were efficient hunters, and hunt like regular spiders do, some actively chase their prey, while others use their stick webs as traps to trap prey. Since they were a female only species, they needed a male from another species, usually Elves or humans, to mate with. Arachne were known to trap lone male travellers who ventured into their territories, in their webs. If the male was to their liking, they would mate with him, and once the mating had been done, they would then proceed to eat them. However, aside from that they were also well known for weaving the finest clothing, a legacy of their unfortunate ancestor; and no other race could compete with them in that regard.
Although they were magical beasts, they could not use any powerful spells. Instead, like many other magical beasts, they used their mana to strengthen and protect their large bodies. As a result they were very nimble and agile despite their size and can easily navigate within trees and dense canopies. They used the pointed ends of their legs to attack. Most sub-species of Arachne did not have poison but of the few that did, had venoms so lethal that they could dissolve a man into a puddle of protein and fat within an hour. Their web laying skills were very profound and the traps they set were very hard to detect. They could also control and lead other spiders and were often called Spider Queens for that, just like an ant queen ordered an entire colony and this skill made them even more deadly. However, despite being very tough, they also have a severe weakness towards fire. Their bodies and threads are weak to fire and are easily burnt. Also, the biggest weak spot was an Arachne’s upper body, which was soft and not covered in any carapace, making it very vulnerable to attacks.
The Arachne who led the Green Bellied Huntsman spiders, her appearance was beyond fascinating. Her hair was a cascade of silvery white flowing down, until well below her waist. Her skin was so very fair and pale that it appeared to be made of the highest quality of porcelain. Her eyes were like crystalline sapphires, with beautiful eyebrows. Her entire face was like the epitome of perfection, as if a sculptor had crafted it out of marble. Her torso was well endowed in the womanly assets and the spider body, was not grotesque, in fact it only added to her inhumane charm. The carapace was milky white in colour, and shined like metal. her beauty was really enchanting, and rather than being revolting, it was as if she were the manifestation of a beautiful fantasy, and made one want to to protect that beauty. Her upper body was covered by a white one piece dress made of silk. This was the queen of the spiders, Arachne.
Add was momentarily mesmerised by her innate beauty, but quickly steadied his thoughts. The Arachne slowly walked over towards him, her 3 pairs of slender legs moving quickly, while the 4th pair was shorter and placed just beneath her torso and was very sharp, probably used as a weapon only. She did not stop until she was around 10 metres away from him, her expression was cold and she had a noble aura around her. The spiders followed behind her and continuously screeched and made noises as if talking with the Arachne while she listened in silence. Some of the spiders also started to slowly surround him from the sides. The atmosphere was very tense and appeared to be a stalemate, and as Add was planning on using a small napalm bomb to burn the living hell out of these spiders, the Arachne opened her mouth to speak.
“Human, thee sure has’t courage, coming to mine own domain and killing mine own kin!”
(Human, you sure have courage, coming to my domain and killing my kin!)
She spoke the human language of the northern subcontinent, but it was a very archaic dialect. Her voice was sweet and melodious, yet the underlying anger could be well perceived. Add knew that an Arachne was at least a General class monster, and the one before him was probably a king class monster, which was very dangerous to confront directly. He did not speak and stayed silent, calmly watching any movements made by the Arachne or the spiders. Taking his silence as fear, the Arachne continued.
“Usually this queen wouldst has’t hath killed thee f’r thy crime and then did feed thee to h’r kin! But since thee appeareth somewhat acceptable to the eyes, and this queen hast been looking f’r a mateth, the lady shalt beest gen’rous and alloweth thee to beest h’r mateth. Thee shouldst feeleth did bless, to beest able to beest with this queen, is thy greatest honour human!”
(Usually this queen would have killed you for your crime and then fed you to her kin! But since you appear somewhat acceptable to the eyes, and this queen has been looking for a mate, she shall be generous and allow you to be her mate. You should feel blessed, to be able to be with this queen, is your greatest honour human!)
“What the Blyat.”
Is exactly what Add ended up saying reflexively inside his head.
