Searching For Andromeda - Chapter 112 Fulfilling The Promise
“Miko!”
“Miko’s drowning!”
“No! I don’t want to die!”
Samuel listened and stared at the children around him who were tugging his sleeve. They were crying as the seawater gradually rose Samuel moved towards the children and then carried as many as he can to his arms. But the water which was surging through the deck from the broken planks were doubling in number. Samuel glanced to the cobbled floor and the wall they hadit was thanks to that there isn’t water breaking through the prison walls. However, outside their cells was a ship made from wood. Without Jaxon’s water barrier it was just a normal ship.
The children wailed and cry as water began to rise even higher. Samuel, whose leg wasn’t chained anymore, knelt down as he made his back available to climb through.
“Here! Climb here!” Samuel pointed his back to the children. His body was half-soaked from the cold, ocean water and he was at the end of his wits. Samuel turned to Miko whose face was still peering from the rising waters.
Dammitwhy isn’t she waking up? Samuel wanted to scream. She was thrown athwart the cabin due to the sudden rush of waters. Samuel had seen how her head hit one of the pillars as she fell unconscious. Miko’s body looked frail from the start, so it wasn’t a shock that she fell unconscious after a hit in the head.
Samuel gritted his teeth as he tried different variations of plans in his head.
And thenhe remembered something.
“So you’re doing this in secret?” Samuel asked.
Miko nodded. “Of course. Jaxon isn’t the type to give food to children. He sees them as goods, after all”
Samuel frowned. “You aren’t defending him now. You’re making me confused.”
Miko’s gaze didn’t waver, as if she was expecting Samuel to say those words say that sooner or later. She gave him a smile, and then wiped the crumbs on the corner of one of the children’s lips.
“You see, Samuel it’s not that I’m defending Jax. But I know he’s got a reason why he’s doing this. I believe there’s still hope.” Miko exclaimed. “He’s doing this for a reason.”
“How do you know?”
“I just do,” Miko answered. “I know Jaxon better than anyone else.”
Samuel didn’t have a say to this.
“That pirate captain, he’s doing something terrible to these children. He’s selling them. I don’t see any other reason that would come well out of it.” Samuel exclaimed. “These children are labeled as ‘goods’ and not people. How in the world am I able to take your words seriously, Miko?”
Miko only gave Samuel yet another smile; but this time, visible sadness in her eyes had marked over Samuel.
“There is a lot more to him than what he’s showing,” Miko exclaimed. “Now I have to go and tend to other matters. Children, go back to your cells. You too, Samuel.”
“You want me to go back to the cell?” Samuel provoked, standing vigilantly. All of the brief affluence were gone now. Samuel recalled and was reminded that despite this girl’s kindness, she was still with the enemy. And this was the proof of that.
“You fed the children, let me out of my cell, and even small talked with me.” Samuel ascertained. “You’re a good person, Mikoat least, from your stories. But words could either hold truth or lies. And in this case, I can’t tell which side of the coin your words weigh.”
Miko, once more, didn’t look taken aback with Samuel’s words. Instead, she modestly stood up and then ambled her way towards Samuel. Samuel, who was still vigilant and wary, waited for Miko to unleash an attack. Even if Miko is indeed going to attack him, the difference in their physique is still noticeable (even if Miko was taller than Samuel).
Samuel waited as his heartbeat grew loud. No, he shouldn’t underestimate this girl. She earned her spot to be with the enemyand if he heard it right (which he did), Miko is a brewer of poisons, and depending on her management of doses and concentrations she might kill you on the spot. Samuel, who was filled with openings from the layer of clothing he had worn, instantly knew he was at a disadvantage.
He continued to back away slowly from Miko as his mind processed whatever it could in a short amount of time. Routes, escape, violence, defenseSamuel was thinking of endless possibilities about the stunts Miko could pull. She could suddenly get a needle pin from her pocket which was drenched with poison (as seen in the movies Samuel hated) and then stab his neck or any parts of Samuel’s body with it. Miko could also pull a gun (assuming there is one in this world) and blow Samuel’s skull OR shoot him with a tranquilizer. She could also try to pull stunts like Bruce Lee or Jackie Chan if she actually knew martial arts.
Miko could do a lot of things in Samuel’s mindhe barely knew her, after all. Who knows what this girl’s abilities could be? Samuel isn’t a boy who would judge someone based on their gender. Even if their physiques might look different as well as the ‘frail’ image this Miko was showing, he still couldn’t and shouldn’t even think about underestimating her.
Sheep in a wolf’s clothing, and a small cat turning into a tiger. There are too many comparisons to be usedso many figurative languages to take someone paints the picture vividly. In those few moments Samuel had, as he continued to back away, he came to the conclusion that the best decision would be to avoid contact as much as possible. He had to keep a considerable distance that would separate him and Miko(‘s probable poison needles and martial arts?) so he could escape later on (if the timing’s right). Samuel backed away finally as he reached the dead end, preparing to run
“Here.”
Samuel blinked.
“What?”
“Here.” Miko reached for Samuel’s hand, and then laid a key on his palm.
“A key for?”
“It’s a key for the chain in your feet. It’s a trick so that Jaxon won’t be suspicious.” Miko smiled. “I’m sorry I couldn’t give you the key that’ll let you out of the cage but I promise I’ll come back every day until until all of us part ways.”
**
Samuel immediately drew the key away from his pocket and then went to the side of the iron bars. He then inserted the key to the aperture, letting it click; after several attempts, the lock doesn’t come off.
‘So it was true that this is just a key for the chains’ Samuel then tried to stand up as he carried the children who were sitting in his back. The water was still rising; Samuel didn’t have time to lose. Samuel immediately unlocked the chain from his feet and then as it came off, Samuel took a deep breath.
“Alright,” Samuel said in the calmest voice possible. “You guys, can you all swim?”
“P-patriarge’s our own country and it’s near the ocean so yes”
“I-I can’t swim.”
“Me too”
Samuel nodded. “Right. Those who can swim, carry those who can’t!” Samuel announced to everyone with a yell.
Samuel had no time to waste.
Lock picking.
It was his plan from the start when he found a loose wire from the iron bars. Now he’s got a key.
“It won’t be easy,” Samuel murmured as he held the key centimeters away from the aperture. “But this’ll do.”
He was trying not to panic. Miko was able to float, miraculously (and thank you, Physics) from the knee-length waters. Samuel glanced occasionally to the children behind him, the ones on the other cells, and Miko.
“First is to insert the tension wrench into the bottom of the keyhole and apply slight pressure” Samuel murmured. “Insert the pick atop the lock” Samuel then plunged the wire he acquired earlier. “Apply a slight torque to the wrench and scrub the pick back and forth in the keyhole”
“And repeat until the pins set!”
Clang!
Samuel felt a strange feeling of ease as if he had just pulled a loose screw. The cell door opened, and Samuel, without wasting time, ran towards Miko and then carried her to his arms. She was still breathing, and she didn’t exactly drownso there was no need to do a CPR. However, things will get complicated sooner or later so he had to help the other children first.
“Miko, wake up!” Samuel exclaimed, shaking Miko’s shoulders. “Miko!”
Samuel wasn’t the type to save a damsel, especially when he could barely save himself and other people. Thankfully, Miko was able to open her eyes from Samuel’s continuous calls and shaking. The young researcher sighed in relief. It was a good thing he wouldn’t need to slap the hell out of Miko for her to wake up.
“Unlock the other cells and let’s find a way out! I’ll go unlock the other ones! We don’t have much time to waste!”
Miko’s visible shocked face didn’t last to Samuels eyes as he already had himself sauntering towards the other cells, lock picking the doors as swiftly as he could. It was a good thing he has a good memoryhe knows the pattern between the pins and had them retained in his mind.
Samuel, reaching the last to lock pick, opened the cell door wide.
The girl who was hit by Jaxon Sparrows stared at him with her eyes filled with emotion such as confusion and awe.
Samuel carried her, along with the other children who can’t swim.
The girl wrapped her thin arms to Samuel’s neck as she buried her face to his shoulder.
“Are you really going to save us?”
Samuel, who was drenched from his own sweat and the saltwater, mustered to conjure a small grin.
“What can I say?” Samuel cockily asserted. “I’m here to fulfill my promise.”
