Serendipity – A Chance Encounter - Chapter 368
They decided to stay out in the garden that day as the weather was very nice; it was warm and sunny. Despite the awkward beginning an hour ago, the atmosphere seemed to become quite amiable that they were no longer bothered to make sure either one of the grandfathers wouldn’t feel left out.
However, there was a little competition going on between the two. Knowing Grandfather Cho’s personality, Daniel and Samantha already anticipated that this was going to happen — that he was going to do something like this. But what they didn’t expect was to see Grandfather Kim compete for little Ash’s attention as well.
But who could they really blame? The two grandfathers were both aggressive businessmen in their fields.
While playing with Ashton, they all sat on the grass. Ash was in the middle while the two grandfathers sat a meter apart and in front of the little boy.
With the ball on Ashton’s hands, Grandfather Kim called his great-grandchild over, “Come little one. Come to Great Gramps.” His arms extended out as if waiting to receive the little boy.
Not wanting to lose, Grandfather Cho also did the same. “No no no, come over here…give me the ball.”
Samantha, Daniel and Seo Joon looked at each other. These grandfathers were competing Ashton’s attention. The atmosphere was fine but then when the old men started to fight over the little boy, Samantha began to feel uneasy. Everything will be okay, right?
At that moment, Ashton looked at Grandpa Kim and then Grandpa Cho. His little head went back and forth looking at them as if he was trying to understand what they were doing. But for some reason, he took the step to the right…and with the ball in his hands, the little potato wobbly walked towards Grandpa Kim and gave him the ball, making the old man’s smile reach his ears.
“Good boy!” he said, hugging Ashton in his arms.
Grandpa Cho scoffed when he saw that the other was chosen instead of him. He was looking sour but kept quiet.
Later, when they were eating snacks on the picnic mat, Grandpa Cho carefully tore pieces of bread on his plate and then gave them to little Ashton. He was just doing this casually as if it was the most natural thing to do. But baby Ash seemed to have thought of something… he looked at the small pieces of bread and then glanced up to his Great Grandpa Cho before he picked up one small piece and then fed it to him.
The little gesture surprised Grandpa Cho but nevertheless, he was so elated. “Oh, you’re giving it to me?” He opened his mouth and received the small bread from the little boy. “Thank you! You’re such a good kid.”
Grandpa Kim obviously saw the exchange in front of him and also felt a little sour. He wanted to be fed too, okay?
Seeing the look on his grandfather’s face, Seo Joon couldn’t help but tease so he tore a piece of bread and held it in front of Grandfather Kim’s face. “Here gramps, stop drinking vinegar. Eat more bread instead.”
The old man glared at his grandson and scoffed. “Who’s drinking vinegar? You’re drinking vinegar!”
Samantha and Daniel laughed heartily. Their afternoon wasn’t so bad. Though it was not what they had planned, it turned out okay in the end.
…
It was already four in the afternoon when the grandfathers decided to leave. In front of the house, the five of them stood by the door and said their goodbyes. However, before Grandfather Cho left, he managed to ask the couple, “When are you going to give Ashton a sibling? He’s turning one year old soon, do you plan to wait for years before the next one?”
His question made Samantha stiffen and Daniel noticed it so he chuckled as he responded, “We’re not in a hurry. It has only been a year since Samantha gave birth, pregnancy, labor and taking care of a baby is quite a challenge. Let’s not pressure.” He stroked Samantha’s back as he tried to comfort her, he knew what she was thinking.
“Well, as long as you plan to have another one. Then that’s okay.” Grandpa Cho nodded.
“What about you, Joon? You’re already 29. When are you getting married and have kids? Don’t only work! You have to think about family too!” said Grandpa Kim. He rarely comments and urges them about things like this but after seeing that Samantha’s life in that aspect has more progress than this grandson of his, he wanted to push him a little. He wanted more grandkids!
“That will happen. Don’t worry about me. Hannah and I are going in that direction. Just be patient.” Seo Joon answered as he placed his arm around Grandpa Kim’s shoulder.
“You should hit the road so that you won’t get stuck in traffic.” Samantha gave both grandfathers a hug.
As soon as they left, Samantha and Seo Joon breathed out a sigh of relief and exchanged glances. “Never. Let’s not do that again.” Samantha resigned as she walked back inside the house.
“I agree.. Taking care of two old grumpy grandpas? How exhausting!” Seo Joon complained to Daniel who only shook his head as they both followed Samantha into the house.
