Serina: The Alpha’s Mate - Chapter 78
Serina woke up in the afternoon, around 3 o’clock but Nicholas was no where to be found when she looked around the room. “Nik?” She called for his name, getting out of the bed and walked to the balcony. The fresh air greeted her and she inhaled lots of it, refreshing her lungs to the cool air. ‘Kiro, where’s Nicholas?’ Serina asked the wolf directly since she couldn’t find him around and she didn’t want to go out of the room without him either.
‘He’s baking some pastries for afternoon snacks.’ Kiro answered, informing Nicholas at the same time that their mate was already awake.
‘Is he about to finish?’
‘Hn. He’s not making much. Just for you and Zalia.’
‘What about his father and sister?’
‘Yiran skipped her class earlier because she wanted to see you guys. However, she was sent to school for her afternoon class. As for his father, he is currently at the company.’
‘I see.’ She sat on the chair at the balcony and watched the back garden where she found lots of flowers and a huge fish pond as well. ‘He’s got a nice view in his room.’
‘Yiran specially requested that. She and Nicholas will see the same beautiful view from their room.’
‘That’s very thoughtful of her.’
Sofia and Kiro talked for the meantime because, Nicholas was busy. She didn’t want to disturb him and she didn’t want to hinder him with his work either, After all, she’s not really good with kitchen stuff. Her mother even forbids her from using the kitchen in case she’d cause it to burn.
Half an hour later, she excused herself when she felt the faint energy intruding her mind. The energy was unfamiliar and she didn’t know where it came from. When she wanted Brittislava to trace the energy back to its source, her dragon didn’t answer her. She furrowed her brows but she didn’t pursue this matter. Since the intruder was unsuccessful, she didn’t bother disturbing her dragon. However, she already had her doubts.
Brittislava knew that source of energy. She knew what Serina was thinking but it wasn’t the same for Serina. Although she didn’t get any response from Brittislava, her dragon was very familiar with the werewolves’ energy after what her predecessor did. A person’s flow of energy is different and the same goes for all other species. They have different energy traces and if you encountered that person before, as long as you pay attention to them, you would still recognize them even if thousands of years have passed.
“Nicholas said that his mate is human but I felt a different energy inside her. She’s a complicated person. Her mind barrier was very strong and I couldn’t penetrate it at all. If she’s really our future Luna then, this pack has a very bright future.”
“I couldn’t sense any specie within her either. She smells of human, too.”
“How can a human be so powerful?”
The elders have gathered together when they heard that Nicholas came home with his mate. They have a job to do and that was to make sure that he brought the right person. They needed to make sure that she won’t bring disaster to their pack especially with the current state of their Luna and the situation of the Vallardi company. They can’t afford any more damage to their pack and properties.
Since Serina felt the intrusion, it was impossible for Nicholas not to notice it. Few minutes after Serina felt someone spied on her, the door to Nicholas’ room was pushed open and Nicholas came inside with worry on his face.
“Are you done with cooking or baking? Or something you are doing at the kitchen?” She asked him but Nicholas didn’t answer. He only pulled her close and hugged her. “What’s wrong?”
“No, nothing. I just thought something happened.”
“What could happen to me inside your property? And inside your room at that.” He didn’t answer again. His eyes turned a darker hue of blue but he remained quiet. “Stop hugging me. When are we going to find the wolves? I want to see them already. It’s almost night time and we will be living tomorrow again.”
“Let’s have some snacks before going to the forest. You haven’t had lunch because you were sleeping deeply. I didn’t want to disturb you.”
“Thanks for taking care of me.”
“It’s my pleasure sweetheart.”
“Don’t sweetheart me, you idiot. Where did that come from?” Serina questioned followed by her faint laughter. She pulled away from Nicholas and walked to the door on her own. She just wanted to calm her heart a little from being overjoyed. Nonetheless, Nicholas already heard the excited beat of her heart.
“The endearment came out of nowhere but it will lead us somewhere.”
“I’m getting a bad feeling about that.” Serina retorted. She was back to being playful again but her wariness and vigilance was raised to another level. She didn’t want anyone intruding her mind and find out her secret. “I’ll stay with you in the kitchen but don’t worry, I won’t burn down your kitchen.”
So, she ended up sitting on a high stool while watching Nicholas make some snacks. Even though Yiran was having a class, he set a side her portion for later once she’s home. Once done, Nicholas asked someone to bring the food to her mother while he and Serina stayed at the patio to the back garden.
Right now, there was little fear in his hear. He feared that something would happen if his mother and Serina would meet given that his mother was very weak now. Unlike their first meeting, Serina was the weak back then, with her life force being sucked out. The situation has been reversed this time.
“Nicholas?”
“Hm.”
“Are you worried about something? I’m not sure if you notice but you have been sighing for the nth time already while looking at me.”
“I did?”
“Yeah. And don’t even make any stupid excuses because I’ll know it.”
Nicholas smiled and stared into space once again but this time, he said something that struck her nerves. “I was just thinking that you could be a werewolf. Ridiculous, right?”
Serina blinked her eyes several times. Her hands trembled and glass of juice she was holding was shaking. If she didn’t put it down, it would have spilled the liquid on her clothes. “What…what are you talking about? Me? A werewolf? I’d love the idea but that’s just impossible. I can’t be a werewolf.”
“Why are you so sure?”
“Because I know my origin.”
“And what if you are adopted?”
“Ha?! Don’t be ridiculous. It can’t be possible. I look so much like my auntie when she was young. I mean, the sister of my father. We are very similar and just to let you know, she died young and unmarried. Also, I got my eyes from my father. I don’t have much resemblance with my mother but a lot of people say that I look like her. The thought of being adopted to the family is close to 0%.”
“But how are you able to communicate with my wolf?”
This question struck Serina like a lightning. For a moment, she wasn’t able to answer even though her mouth was gaping. She tried to find the right words but she didn’t know how to explain things without revealing the fact that she has a dragon in her.
“Wait. Wait a minute. How did you know that I can talk to Kiro?”
“Didn’t you tell me about it yourself?”
“I did?”
“Yes, we talked about it on the day that we reconciled. I thought something was weird. It’s impossible for you to communicate with the wolves, specially not my wolf. And then, you told me that time you and Damon first met. I remembered he was trying to suck the strong spirit in you and that could be the spirit of a wolf. Why else would you be so fond of wolves if not for this reason?”
“But then again, I can only communicate with Kiro and not the other wolves.”
“Really? Shall we try it later?”
“Fine.” Serina didn’t mind. If that’s the way to prove him that she’s not a werewolf then, she’d do it. “If I happen to be a normal human or bearer of a different spirit, are you going to leave me like last time?”
“Of course, not.” Nicholas answered almost automatically. He never wanted to give her reason to doubt his feelings for her. It didn’t matter what kind of spirit she has because two years ago, without certainty if she’s a human or a werewolf, he already fell in love with her. And it’s a hard fall that he couldn’t get up and never wanted to get up from it.
Some things still bothered Serina and this time, she was the one sighing for several times. Nicholas didn’t question her though since he knew that he caused the troubles in her mind.
Around four in the afternoon, when they finished their snack, Serina changed her clothes to a tracksuit and rubber shoes. “We should have gone earlier. It will be dark in few hours.”
“Some of the bigger and wiser wolves will come out when it’s a little darker and I want you to meet someone very close to me aside from my family and Kiro.”
“And it’s another wolf.”
Nicholas didn’t answer. He informed the house butler that they’d be gone for a while and that the family can have dinner without them. Just as they were about to leave, Yiran arrived with the driver following behind with her school bag.
“Where are you guys going?” she inquired, looking towards Serina with calculative eyes.
“We’re going to see the little pups and we’ll name them.” Serina answered and her eyes lit up brightly at the mention of wolf pups.
“You can’t rename them! You already gave names to the other three! Are you going to take the other three from me as well? I hate you!”
“Yiran! Mind your manners!” Nicholas scolded with his eyes glaring at his sister, warning her with his cold stare. It was the first time that he scolded his sister like this and it hurts her even more.
“I hate the both of you!”
