Standing Right Next To You - Chapter 366
“I thought you were going back to your office so why are you here?” Lina questioned the man sitting next to her.
When her boyfriend had asked her to take a seat beside him, she did not decline his kind offer and hurried to plant her butt on the couch.
Reuben smiled and patted her head when he saw her obedient behavior but the corner of his lips twitched when he heard her words.
The young lady tilted her head when she saw that he was staring at him as though she had said something weird.
‘Did I say something wrong?’ She wondered and waited for him to explain why he had shot such an incredulous look at her.
“Kitten, it’s 9 PM. I finished my work and headed over to this place.” He informed while holding his hand out as he pointed towards the watch fastened around his wide wrist.
“Yea, right!” Lina chuckled while rolling her eyes but her laughter died down when she saw his serious expression.
She pulled his hand over to her side and leered at the exquisite watch only to find that he had indeed spoken the truth.
“I slept for four hours?” She muttered to herself but Reuben could hear it clearly as he was sitting close to her.
It was close to sunset when Lina had felt exhausted and yearned to take a rest but now it seemed as though the mini nap had turned into something more than that.
Reuben shook his head when he saw the confusion fading from her eyes and patted her head once again.
“Clumsy Kitten, did you get any work done, or were you asleep the entire time?” He inquired, teasing her for the lazy attitude she held.
Back at the restaurant, she had promised to finish her work at the earliest and come back to him but things were different from what she had said.
‘I’m glad that I came over.’ He shook his head, proud of the smart move he had made.
When he had returned from the restaurant, their conversation with Trigger had only strengthened his resolve to keep his girlfriend safe.
If people were watching him and his Kitten was also implicated then he needed to make sure that no harm would come her way.
Before they even left for lunch in the afternoon, he had ordered his assistant, Mathew Kim to figure out where Lina would be staying during her seclusion period.
This was the mission he had given to Mathew concerning Lina which he had to accomplish before she left after their lunch.
To obtain valuable information, Mathew had to book a separate room to dine with the other assistant and during lunch, he was able to fish the details of Lina’s hotel name from Benji.
Benji was not as guarded against Mathew due to his klutzy behavior which had given the smaller assistant an advantage in this situation.
With the details of the hotel, all it took was a simple phone call for Mathew to confirm that Lina was truly staying in this place and even obtained the hotel room number from the management.
The next steps were easier than the ones before and the end result was Reuben popping up before Lina’s hotel room.
It took Lina a couple of minutes to discern that she had wasted a large amount of time in her impromptu nap which should have lasted for an hour at most.
‘Looks like I will have to pull an all-nighter…’ She grumbled in order to make up for the time lost.
“Have you eaten anything yet?” Reuben questioned and sighed when he saw her shaking her head.
The hotel staff would be bringing her food over any moment now as it was time for her dinner but Lina did not know about the arrangements that Benji had made for her meals.
“I will order something now.” She answered with a sheepish smile.
She was still under the impression that she would have to call and order for her dinner so she answered Reuben what she had thought was the truth.
“Go wash up while I order for us.” He offered and gave her messy hair a subtle glance.
‘I thought it was Benji and did not bother to tidy my appearance.’ She finally realized that she must have a bird’s nest on her head at the moment.
Embarrassed at her untidy appearance, she nodded at him and rushed to her room to freshen up.
Reuben shook his head at her cute behavior and picked up the phone to order their dinner.
Inside the bathroom in her room, Lina leaned against the door and covered her face in her palms.
‘He appeared out of nowhere, like a dream, and now is here to eat with me!’ She squealed at the adorable surprise that her boyfriend had given.
Just this afternoon, he had put on an aggrieved face when she had reminded him that they would not be able to meet for the next few days.
But look at him now, he was right here in her hotel room as though it was the most obvious thing for him to do.
‘He must have planned this right from the start!’ She surmised as she was beginning to put the pieces of the puzzle together.
First, he had acted as though it was difficult for him to stay away from her but when it was time for her to leave, he did not try to stop her even once.
Now as she looked back to the events of the day, she realized that he had been so lukewarm in sending her away after lunch because he knew that they would be meeting soon enough.
A warmth spread throughout her heart when she grasped the reason why he had behaved that way and did not insist on driving her to the hotel.
‘He wanted to surprise me.’ She nodded and looked at her flushed cheeks in the mirror which proved that she was liking this surprise very much.
After Lina understood his intentions, she did not waste time dawdling in the bathroom but hurried to wash up.
While she was making herself look presentable, Reuben had finished talking on the phone.
‘So Benji had made sure that she eats on time.’ He nodded in appreciation of the assistant’s forethought.
He had dialed the number of the front desk but the call was forwarded to the manager’s office before he could speak.
A short conversation had led him to gain information about the strict orders that Benji had given to the Manager.
In return, Reuben asked the man to add an extra serving as he would also be partaking in the meal with her.
Manager Lang was confused as to who the man on the other side of the phone was but he dare not ask too many questions as he feared that he might offend someone important and powerful.
He took the order given by the new man from the distinguished guest’s room and disconnected the call to give urgent instructions to his kitchen staff about this change of plans.
‘I wonder who was the man in that Miss’ room…’ Manager Lang pondered as he waited for the news from his staff.
