- Chapter 60: Planning the Technology Tree
Today, during the conversation with Wu Jiarong, Gu Hang felt a sense of satisfaction.
Although she did not directly answer his previous question of whether she believed in him, her attitude was clearly conveyed through her subsequent explanations.
In the end, her intentions became even more apparent:
“If the Governor trusts me, I can work in the secret factory. It will be your research center, and all your future technological outputs will have a plausible explanation.”
Wu Jiarong’s demeanor was humble.
Gu Hang looked at her, filled with appreciation.
“Very well, I am very pleased with your suggestion. I hope you can fulfill all you have promised, and I assure you that you will get what you want.”
Wu Jiarong’s heart skipped a beat, but she quickly regained her composure.
She was confident that Governor Gu Hang understood her underlying message.
Entering the Governor’s secret factory to work would certainly allow all special outputs to be attributed to her in the future.
In addition to the normal secrecy mechanisms, creating an extra layer of deception would make it appear as though a highly talented technical master was working for the Governor, thus explaining the factory’s— or rather, the future Wu Jiarong Research Institute’s—outputs.
This way, if outsiders wanted to uncover the secret, they would first have to break through the secrecy mechanisms and methods. Then, they would see her, and only by dealing with her could they obtain the black box’s secrets.
The security level would be greatly increased.
At the same time, she would gain more.
She would become the Governor’s most important technical advisor.
Even if more outstanding technical experts arrived in the future, she would not have to worry about her position being replaced.
Even if she did nothing but lie around, there would still be a continuous output of technical knowledge attributed to her.
As the Governor’s territory developed, there would be more and more advanced new technologies, and she might truly become a sage just by lying down.
Moreover, being able to study the black box, a technological artifact from the golden age, up close was something she could never have imagined in the past.
With her former status, it was utterly impossible for her to access such top-level research materials.
She knew she did not have the ability to dismantle the black box and fully understand its contents.
If so many top sages of the Imperial Mechanicus couldn’t figure it out, there was no way a small technical specialist like her could.
But even if she could gain just a little insight or inspiration from it?
Even a tiny bit of superficial knowledge might equate to the results of her past technical studies for a long time.
She was in!
……
The arrangements were made quickly.
After Gu Hang left, Wu Jiarong immediately brought her team and, under the guidance of the Governor’s loyal Servant Soldiers, moved into the secret factory.
The place was renamed to a research institute, though unfortunately, it wasn’t named ‘Wu Jiarong Research Institute’ as she had hoped; it had no name at all.
But she didn’t mind.
She already saw a bright future, which filled her with motivation to work.
The application plan for the ‘Whetstone’ engine that Gu Hang requested was quickly produced by her.
It wasn’t the hastily made-up thing to appease the Governor that she had presented earlier; it was a genuine, heartfelt creation.
While it wasn’t considered advanced, making something too advanced would be beyond her capabilities.
However, the Governor’s requirement was not for something advanced but for something reliable and easy to mass-produce.
In these aspects, she had achieved the utmost perfection.
She believed that within the same level of technical specialists, no one could do better than her.
After all, she almost became a mechanical engineer back in the day, failing to be promoted only due to political struggles.
She had always felt that her true level was already at the mechanical engineer standard.
And what she presented was more than just a design; it included two samples.
One was a small three-wheeler with a cargo bed that could carry three people, with space on the side for mounting a machine gun.
A military tricycle was thus born.
The larger engine was used to create a big truck head.
It was equipped with various types of trailers, including cargo beds, containers, and flatbeds, which could be attached to the truck head.
Whether for transporting goods or soldiers, it could serve multiple purposes.
After seeing the finished products and even personally test-driving them, Gu Hang was extremely satisfied with Wu Jiarong’s work!
He named these two vehicles.
The tricycle was designated as “Patroller-XL100.”
The truck head was named “Iron Bull-RN100.”
These two types of vehicles would undoubtedly continue to iterate in the future.
Wu Jiarong had already developed a mass production plan for them, with subsequent related work to be handed over to the Wasteland Society.
The Alloy and Plastic Steel Processing Plant would take on some of the parts production work.
A new vehicle factory would be built, with Wu Jiarong guiding the setup of the manufacturing processes and production lines to start trial mass production.
There was no rush for the engine plant; the Master Machine’s black box could directly produce the production lines for the two different specifications of the Whetstone engines.
There was no immediate need to rush; for now, they wouldn’t be used much.
Producing too many engines would just result in them gathering dust, as the speed of vehicle production couldn’t keep up.
Afterwards, Wu Jiarong rambled on to Gu Hang about many things she planned to do next.
Delving into the black box, improving technical levels without dismantling it, perfecting theories, and researching the various products of the black box… these were part of her personal ‘cultivation,’ so they need not be elaborated here.
Additionally, she planned to make the ‘Research Institute’ live up to its name.
Next, she intended to work on the development of propellants and shells.
This should be quite manageable, as the production lines for the G9 Rifle Series naturally included bullet production processes, with propellant being a key component.
However, the black box-generated production lines were purely for the G9 Rifle Series and weren’t suitable for artillery. But since the production process was already available, with Wu Jiarong’s skills, isolating the propellant production part to specialize in production was feasible.
Along with the production of warheads and explosive components, they would eventually be able to produce their own shells, ensuring Gu Hang wouldn’t have to worry about running out of mortar shells and rendering his mortars useless.
Not just mortar shells, but rocket artillery could also be produced.
With the ability to produce shells, artillery production would also be on the agenda.
Unlike mortars, Wu Jiarong’s design aimed to create genuine, large-caliber artillery.
Artillery is the God of War!
She envisioned a 155mm howitzer, designed with practicality, durability, high reliability, and simple manufacturing processes in mind.
Of course, this might affect accuracy, but it was a minor issue.
This aligned with the Governor’s philosophy of ‘first solve the problem of having, then solve the problem of quality.’
Additionally, single-use rocket launchers and multiple-launch rocket systems would also be on the agenda.
Subsequently, with the ‘Iron Bull’ truck, and some modifications, they would have rocket launcher vehicles, towed artillery, and even self-propelled artillery, thus creating a range of heavy firepower equipment.
