Stronghold In The Apocalypse - Chapter 229
“I wonder why the commander is taking so long to come back?”
Soldier One couldn’t help but wonder along with Soldier Two as both of them stood on the entrance of the shopping center while staring at the darkness inside with dusk in the background.
The two of them had already finished loading up the meat of the mutated beast that were killed earlier, and they had also already stocked full of the van they had brought with them.
And it’s already been almost two hours since that and dusk is already approaching but till now, they still haven’t seen the shadow of Alex who had ventured inside the dark shopping center.
“I wonder what’s happening inside though”
The two of them couldn’t but get curious because the only thing that they could hear coming from inside the shopping center was the sound of someone rummaging through a lot of things.
But it’s not the ordinary sound of someone rummaging through documents or clothes, but it sounds like someone is lifting something big and throwing it aside.
Like the sound of TV falling on the floor or something heavy sliding along the floor.
Crash!
“W-whoa! What the..hell!”
The two soldiers were so startled that they quickly took a few steps back with their guards up when a TV suddenly came crashing down on the ground floor.
“Lin, Carl, come up here and help me with this”
Following that, they heard Alex’s voice from the second floor, where they could barely see the silhouette of a man standing behind the glass railings, and beside him is a towering figure of something they are not sure about because there wasn’t enough light inside.
Lin and Carl looked at each other before they hurriedly made their way inside and through the already not functioning escalator.
“Here”
The two soldiers had just stepped foot on the second floor when Alex walked over towards them and gave both of them a pair of flashlights.
Both of them quickly turned it on and shone the light in front of them, and saw Alex covered in dust from head to toe, then they shone the lights beside him and saw an almost broken cart filled with things like a small generator, an axe, ropes, a couple of small solar panels and many more.
‘He must have been inside a hardware store around here’
Soldier Two, who is called Lin thought to himself while looking at the various things piled on top of each other on the cart.
“Commander, is this all of them? Are there more things that you have left behind?” asked Carl, who is wondering inside on how Alex found his way around in the darkness.
Alex just nodded at them and said, “Get another car running, preferably something big to put these things inside”
After saying that, he turned around and once again walked towards the darkness.
Lin and Carl just stood rooted on the spot and watched him disappear into the darkness.
“I wonder how he finds his way through the darkness”
“He must have night vision goggles or something?”
“Hmmm…anyway, let’s get these things down first and let’s find a cargo truck. I think I saw one two blocks from here”
Both of them slowly picked up the things on the cart and moved them on the ground floor, and left it there for the time being.
After doing that, both of them left the building and went towards the direction of where Carl saw a cargo truck on their way here.
“Hey Carl, we really are doing a lot of things during the span of one day, aren’t we?” said Lin as he killed a zombie that was on their way.
“I know, right? But don’t you sometimes think that we’re fortunate?” said Carl as he also dispatched a couple of zombies on his side.
Lin turned his head towards Carl while he stabbed his blade through the zombie’s head in front of him.
“How so?”
“Well, look at us. We’re literally using an ExoSuit! Which is something that should have only existed in games or in movies! I don’t even know how the Boss managed to acquire them or the amazing team behind this technology!”
“And not only, our aircrafts, and that tank along with the Boss’s armor is very similar to those things from the game Halo. Could it be that the company who created this game was behind this technology and that they were already making it a reality when they released the game?”
Carl started blabbering about things he had noticed ever since he joined the survivor base in Manchester and joined its army.
After all, those things are pretty obvious to any avid gamers.
Lin just listened to him and didn’t comment on anything as he wasn’t really someone who was into online games or something similar so he really couldn’t understand where Carl is coming from when looking at his excited expression while talking about the armors and stuff.
“God, you’re boring”
“Shut up~”
Realizing that Lin is not saying anything at all on what he had just told him, Carl couldn’t help but mock him, while Lin on the other hand just sneered at him.
“Anyway, we’re almost there. Keep your eyes on the lookout, we don’t want any mutated ambushing us while the Commander is away”
“I know the drill. It’s not like this is our first time being by ourselves in a zombie infested city”
Carl rolled his eyes at Lin’s constant reminder every time both of them are by themselves with no backup if sh*ts ever hit the fan.
Crack!
Both of them were carefully moving towards the direction of the truck when they suddenly heard the sound of glasses being stepped on when they had just reached a street corner, and they quickly turned bodies towards where the sound came from and pointed their guns forward and was about to open fire when a frantic voice reached their ears.
“P-please, don’t shoot!”
Both of them quickly halted the movement of their finger that was just about to press the trigger on their guns when they saw that it wasn’t an enemy, but a ragged looking woman and a little girl hiding behind her that appeared before them.
