Stuck as a Villain! - Chapter 190: Assurance
“So let me get this straight.” Arata, after gaining most of the information regarding their reincarnation and purpose of life, got up from his seat and stretched his body a little.
The others still looked focused, but Arata’s summary would allow them to collect their thoughts.
“So from what you say, every six hundred years, we need to fight a war against the Evil. The being responsible for all the Temple summoning and the reason why every human needs to have a Soul Core, to stay alive.”
Getting the nod from the pale-skinned woman, Arata continued, “The last time we fought these beings, we were in the bodies of those six heroes whom everyone regards nearly as their God. The Six first heroes ever known to mankind.”
The woman again nodded.
The cycle of reincarnations spans various timelines, assigning specific bodies and distinct minds to these six souls. This intricate process aims to assess which individuals possess the capability to bring an end to the ongoing war.
And now, the heaven residents finally have the individuals, capable of bringing the Evil down.
“And thus, we are expected to train ourselves in the mystic heavenly arts or some shit and get ourselves prepared for what seems like a deed planetary-level threat?” The Messenger nodded again.
The reason why these six were allowed to have a normal life, was because they asked for it before leaving their former body. They wanted to spend some years in solace and such, they became normal high school children who were able to enjoy some of their peaceful time before facing the possible doom.
“…and what makes those beings manipulating everything from the background, so sure, that we would be able to handle everything. That we would be able to do something which none of our past selves were able to accomplish?”
Saito’s question was not just his own curiosity but was shared by the others as well.
The Messenger looked a little hesitant, but soon she allowed a heavy sigh to leak out her lips, and relayed the answer,
[You would be allowed blessings from the Nexus. The Alfather, who resides above everyone else. The being that foresees everything but has no power to interfere with the mortal realm. Until now, your soul was getting forged in flames, going through several reincarnations, experiences, and such, you all six are well prepared to attain, which no mortal ever could even dream of.]
The explanation was half-baked and did not have enough to receive a nod in understanding. However, seeing how the lady had no intention of continuing her response, left the audience with no option.
Seth was continuously contemplating the matter which flipped his perception entirely.
His planning, preparations, and cautiousness, seemed to be no longer applicable. He needs to revise many things and gain information about what he actually has to face.
However, the fact that he no longer has full awareness of the situation was making him restless.
[Seth, you seem quite disturbed. Is it something that you don’t understand?]
Hearing the Messenger’s words being directed at him, Seth steadily lifted his gaze and looked at the woman.
“There is a lot I want to ask…but I know you won’t answer me truthfully. So let’s cut to the chase.” As Seth got up from his seat, resting Laila on the stairs comfortably, the atmosphere tensed up a little.
The Messenger seemed unwavering by his movement and held her ground quite firmly.
As Seth’s feet halted some meters away from the lady, he crossed his arms behind his back and asked,
“Let’s say…our death and life are no longer in our possession, our actions surely are, right?”
[…]
…now, the Messenger tensed a bit. Although her previous kind expression faltered for a moment, she nodded in assent.
Seth couldn’t help smirking as he further asked, “So even after gaining blessings and all those special training you just spoke about…what if I decide to do nothing…or worse, ”
Leaning close to her, he whispered, “…simply change sides?”
[You!]
The messenger boiled up instantly, her previous demeanor shifting dramatically. However, her temper didn’t make Seth cower away. He remained still in his spot, waiting for her follow-up.
The people behind him had a variety of reactions.
Saito seemed borderline bored while Arata was in a state of half panic, half frustrated with how Seth was behaving. Maydeath had a serious expression, while her palms were already glowing, just in case the lady decided to be funny.
Anabelle…well, she was just sighing at how admirable Seth seemed even when he was interrogating the woman.
The Messenger shifted through various emotions, but soon she regained her composure for some reason.
[What are you suggesting here?]
Seth didn’t have to ponder for long to come up with an answer, “I need assurance. Assurance that even after we fulfill our roles, not because of silly reasons we would have to get reincarnated, and all our memories get erased. I can’t talk in others’ stead, but I want my memories intact if I were to fulfill my purpose.”
Seth was very well aware of the common bullshit plot where the God begin to fear a mortal’s powers after a certain period, and being Death on their side, it wouldn’t be too surprising that he and the other five might get a new life, devoid of every remembrance of what they did and suffered from.
And truth be told, Seth didn’t like the idea.
The Messenger remained silent for a long period of time and Seth was more than okay with giving her the duration, to think before she spoke.
After what seemed like a few minutes of delay, the lady finally voiced her response,
[…in two weeks, you six have to report back in here again. Then, not me, but someone would give all your answers and the ‘assurance’ you want. And don’t think about running away, since nothing could escape a Deity.]
As the lady spoke, the blinding light once again enveloped the palace, and soon after, she disappeared.
Seth dryly chuckled while remembering her last words, as he mumbled to himself,
‘Escape huh…how are we supposed to run away from our destiny?’
