Survive As The Brute’s Wife - Chapter 131
“Hmm,” Maximus placed his hand on her waist. “Theodus is tailing Arioch.”
“So you know where Arioch is?” Alexandra lay on the bed, supporting her elbows. She could see the uncertainty on Maximus’ face as he talked.
“Morfan is working for Arioch now, Lexa,” Maximus twirled a bunch of her hair in his hands. “He couldn’t track him well. And we don’t know where he is.”
Alexandra looked at his face without blinking. She knows the next question he is going to ask. And she waited for him to ask it.
“Do you? Do you remember where he took you? And what happened there?” Maximus asked. “When you returned… at Mount Begida… you were not… You didn’t look all there.” He raised his brows. “Lexa, it was not you then, was it?”
“No, it wasn’t,” Alexandra nodded. “I met my father, and this other soul took control.” Her voice trailed off.
Maximus noted her brows furrowing, her throat bobbed, and she looked stressed. He pulled her to a hug.
“Your father did that?” he asked.
“Yes.” She let out a sigh. “I didn’t even recognize him then, but he…”
Alexandra stayed in his embrace as she thought about it all. Her father wanted her to learn something. When she wanted to talk to Maximus, she couldn’t get out. But when she tried to help Flavia, she was able to break free.
So that must have been the lesson her father wanted her to learn. In her previous life, she did a lot of mistakes. She thought helping Luke is her destiny. She lost sight of who she is, and what she should do.
Her father must have wanted her to not repeat the mistake, of her past, in this life.
“You’ll be safe from now on, Lexa. I won’t let you suffer anymore,” Maximus ran his fingers through her hair.
“How was I behaving then, Max,” Alexandra wanted to know. “You could figure out it was not me?”
She remembered him trying to kiss her. He might have kissed her. But he just now told her that he knew there was something off about her.
“That… something was missing in your eyes,” Maximus pressed his lips. “But can I be open, Lexa?” He caressed her cheeks.
Alexandra nodded. She couldn’t control her smile as she realized that he is very observant when it comes to her.
“I didn’t think that other person – she should be you,” he said. “I can’t understand how someone else would~”
“But Max,” Alexandra interjected him. “I am saying that I saw this other soul inside me! How can…” she let out a sigh. “Maybe you thought that way because of my appearance?” she asked.
Maximus wanted to agree with her. But he couldn’t. He does not care much for her appearance. He prided himself for loving her soul.
But then that other “person” didn’t let him touch her sword. So there is that.
“That should be it.” He decided to tell her what she wants to hear. He smiled seeing the smile on her face.
“It was tough for me, you know.” He remembered those days. Throughout the entire journey back, he couldn’t see the spark in her eyes. It hurt him and made him think that she doesn’t trust him anymore.
“You were jumpy, didn’t talk like you used to, and above all, you didn’t feel comfortable looking me in the eye. I wondered if I did something wrong,” Maximus pressed his lips.
“My dear Tubby!” Alexandra hugged him.
She suffered a lot too. But hearing his words, she found her suffering as nothing. She knows how much he loves her. Watching your beloved person suffer, not knowing how to help, must be the worst suffering there is.
She understood because she feels the same way now.
But unlike him, she is bestowed a lot of power. She decided to take action.
“You can tell me whatever is bothering you, alright? I will help you in every way I can,” she said. She wants to help him get out of the dark thoughts. She will help him get rid of them.
Maximus chuckled as he kissed her forehead. “I will,” he said. His cute wife wants to help him. But he is not like that man. He will not use her for anything. On the contrary, he would help her in any way he can.
Alexandra closed her eyes. His tone was not very assertive. She understood that he does not mean what he says. It felt like he is closing off his heart to her. But he is telling her his secrets. And she could get to know him more and more. She hoped that one day she could get to the bottom of his heart.
[Ah, I wish I could read minds…]
Days passed and Alexandra found that reading books is not helping her much. She knew better than those books. Pricilla and she got a lot closer. They have tea together very often.
And Kefir is not answering her as before. She talked to him the other day and he got offended and left. He is not answering her calls anymore.
She understood that the spiritual beasts wanted her to acknowledge them as hers to correct the past. She wanted to. And that’s what she asked him.
She asked him, how she can change the past? How she could make everyone believe that she was the one who summoned them and not Luke?
Kefir got livid. He said that she is not being honest. And he went off like he never would. He said that she could find a way if she thought about it. She is not doing it because she doesn’t care about it enough.
She talked to Maximus about it and he just smiled. He’s been doing that a lot lately. He’d be hiding his thoughts and would only let her see his handsome smile making her go weak in her knees.
She does have very weak knees lately. Maybe it is because she is spending a lot of the time on the bed, kneeling?
[Ugh!]
Flavia is a lot happier these days. Alexandra understood the reason. Although it is very early to show signs of pregnancy, Flavia has a “feeling” as she says to Alexandra. Alexandra was happy. She loved seeing the smile on Alexandra’s face.
Since Flavia felt very thankful to Alexandra, she said she can ask her anything. Alexandra didn’t have anything to ask of Flavia other than asking her to be happy and healthy.
But Flavia was not convinced and Alexandra had an idea. She asked Flavia to tell her about Maximus’ childhood.
She knew of Tubby’s childhood. He was an abandoned boy, but he was happy. They had each other and their childhood was filled with happiness.Their life changed after meeting Luke and swearing to serve him.
She wanted to know Maximus’ childhood.
He is different than her. He must not have known his past life for a long time. She wanted to know more about his mother’s treatment of him. He did seem very hurt by the way she treated him.
And what she heard from Flavia, made her heart squeeze with pain. Flavia said that even Maximus does not know the most details since she didn’t want him to get hurt.
Since Julius was serving the previous Emperor for a long time and since he was trusted by the previous Emperor, Julius had known a lot of details. And told Flavia everything.
Theodora was never fond of Maximus right from his birth. She was happy that she gave birth to the heir to the throne. And that was just about it. She never cared for her newborn. She never even touched him. And the one time she carried him, she dropped him and she didn’t even bother to pick up the screaming baby.
Flavia talked about how thin and fragile Maximus looked when he was handed over to her. Flavia said that she wanted to murder the Empress for neglecting her baby. She was not even feeding the baby and no one else was allowed to feed the baby either. There were weird rules around.
The maids weren’t allowed to pick up the baby even for soothing and they were told to let the baby scream in his crib. Theodora would leave for parties and balls, leaving the baby hungry. She wanted the baby to get attached to her and so she hated the idea of wet nurses. But she didn’t feed the baby more than three times a day.
Julius, who was still grieving for their dear baby could not bear it when a maid told him about everything. He was enraged by Theodora’s behavior and he complained to the Emperor.
And that’s how Flavia got to be the wet nurse of Maximus.
Flavia told that the four-month-old baby she was handed over was so weak and so sickly, he didn’t even have the energy to cry.
But Flavia took it upon herself to help the baby and within a month, the baby started to gain weight and get better.
And Theodora was not liking that either.. She wanted Flavia gone.
