Survive As The Brute’s Wife - Chapter 143
Alexandra walked out of the garden with her expression somber. Maximus didn’t think and resorted to killing the women for no apparent reason.
She hated herself too for not visiting the Harem earlier. She regretted her decision to not walk around the palace to know the people here. She was so engrossed with her marital life with Maximus, she forwent the thing she loved to do—meeting new people.
[I still can help them…]
Lydia told her that a group of women want to escape the Harem and be free, for a long time. Apparently, they already formulated a lot of plans to escape the Harem, but each time they try to escape, they couldn’t because they were tattled to Theodora by someone. Theodora rules the Harem with iron fists and no one could escape because her guards stop them.
Lydia, under the urge of her Lady—Lady Heathriff was sent to the Dowager to find out the mole amidst them. And she still couldn’t find that person, except she found out a lot about Theodora.
Lydia talked about the connections Theodora had with the shadow figure that would often appear. She also talked about the secret visits ord Zoros would make. For some reason, Theodora trusted her and that’s why Lydia was able to gather all this information.
Lydia was willing to testify against Theodora in exchange for helping the women get out of the Harem. Lydia was pleading(which was not necessary) to let the women—some of them so smart, they want to have business plans and the means to do that—out of this trap. They felt like getting trapped in the Harem is worse than death for them. Some women had other men they loved, and some just wanted out.
They had a feeling that they won’t get the love of the Brute, and now they have had the truth staring right at their face. Rather than living like a caged bird, they wanted out.
Alexandra asked Lydia to give her the names of the women who want to willingly leave the Harem. But Lydia politely refused to out the names of the women without their permission.
Lydia is smart, as Alexandra gathered. She was willing to test her to see if she is really going to help those women by holding back their names. Lydia was relieved that Alexandra accepted this bold request of hers.
Alexandra didn’t mind. All she cared about was the safe exit of the women who want to leave.
And then Lydia put forth another request. To help them as soon as possible. Because the woman who died recently in an “accident” did not die in an accident. And she was one of the women who wanted out. That woman was about to meet her secret lover by the gates, but was killed by one of the assassins sent by “a powerful one”.
Alexandra knew who that powerful one is and the assassin who killed the woman who just wanted to meet her lover.
And she was filled with regret.
If such is the life of the women in this place, this place should be abolished.
Marcus was running behind her as he couldn’t keep up with her pace. Alexandra was in deep thoughts. She didn’t want to meet Maximus now because she was enraged with him for heartlessly killing the women.
He could have helped them escape. He could have done a basic investigation and he might have been able to find out the intention of those women who wanted to leave. He could have done a great power swap by sending those women away. He could have gotten the power back from the ministers.
All he had to do was to say that the women escaped being with the ones they love and put a gag order on that news so that it wouldn’t spread. Or he could have just told the parents of those women that they are dead without actually killing them. They would be living happily, the way they wanted in some place in this big beautiful world.
And now, he killed a woman who wanted out and he separated a star-crossed couple. She could have lived happily with the one she loved. And now she is dead and her lover would be in pain—the same pain he was when he saw her die their last life.
[How could he do that?]
If she didn’t know who he was in his past life, this alone is enough for Alexandra to label Maximus as “Evil”.
Ugh!
Alexandra didn’t want to deal with Maximus now. Because then a fight would break out between them. He is unwell. And she needs to calm down before dealing with him.
So in the meantime, she decided to visit Lady Zoros. She decided to solve Marcus’ issue first.
She was told that she needed to follow certain procedures(which she didn’t listen to) to leave the palace. But she didn’t care about their procedures and rules and whatnot.
She walked through the hallways that didn’t change a bit from when she last walked on them during her last life and walked out of the Castle.
Marcus was surprised that she knows her way around these intricate hallways that even he gets confused at times. But he didn’t question her. He took a peek at her hiding behind a bush. She was glowing blue with the raging fire not hurting her. And she is the one he decided to follow no matter what it takes.
He will never question her.
Even now, she told him that they are going to meet his mother. He did not think that it is going to be a good idea. After he returned from the war, he tried to get permission from his mother for a visit, but he was not granted permission. He pretended that he didn’t understand her refusal to look at his face even though he is returning after a couple of years, and went to meet her.
She sent him away. She refused to let him see her back even.
The handmaid said some excuses that the Lady is feeling ill and didn’t want to pass it on to him. He thought it might be the case, but no doctor was summoned the entire time he was there. He knew it was a lie and that his mother is refusing to meet him.
He didn’t think his mother would let Princess Alexandra meet her if she knows he is with her, but if the Drovarys wants him to follow her, he would do so, gladly.
“Where are you going?”
Alexandra stopped hearing that familiar voice that held the most authority in this place. They were near the throne room. This is the hallway she took in the past to leave the palace and she came here without thinking that Maximus would be in the throne room and she might come across him in this hallway. She was irritated to the maximum, but hearing his mellow voice, softened her voice.
“Maximus!” she turned and smiled at him. She then turned at Marcus. “Wait for me by the door. I will be out in a moment,” she said softly and sent that boy away.
“How did your talk with Theodora go?” he asked. There was a trace of mockery in his inquiry.
“Well, aren’t you watching me dearly, husband?” Alexandra’s tone came off as mockery as she mirrored him.
[He is spying on me!]
“I do. I find absolute pleasure in watching you,” Maximus said and the naughty smirk returned to his face.
Alexandra sighed. For some reason, she was not in the mood to laugh now. She couldn’t get her mind off the women who were killed. And she regretted her part in it.
“So I revealed who I am to her,” she said. His face bloomed with a smile.
“Show who you are to the ones in there…” he pointed at the throne room.
Alexandra felt butterflies in her stomach. The big stained windows were still the same and it brought back her memory of Luke ill-treating her with his Ministers.
“Maybe…” Alexandra nodded. “There will come a time…” she looked away. “Not today.”
“Come in,” he held her hand and tried to drag her. “I want to show you something in there. And show them your Divine flame—”
“No!” Alexandra stopped him there. She knows all he wants is to reveal who she is to them, but she did not want to flaunt it out. She was not in the mood now.
Maximus let go of her hand seeing that she truly does not want to be there.
“I am going out,” she said, fixing the ruffles in her gown. “I am going to meet Lady Zoros.”
The moment she mentioned the Zoros name, Maximus sensed darkness so vile and tasted like bile rising from the pit of his stomach. He didn’t want to speak to her in that tone but he did.
“Is it for his sake? For that son of a bi-”
“Maximus, please…” Alexandra held his arm and looked at him in a pleading way. She could see the darkness wanting to be out, and she blamed herself for letting him get mad.
She wondered if it could have been avoided if she took a different path. But no. He would have found out and would have acted the same.
“What was that maid crying to you about?” Maximus asked with a smirk.. There was no compassion in his face, but only mockery.
