Survive As The Brute’s Wife - Chapter 145
Alexandra stumbled back not able to bear the brunt of the words Tubby threw at her. Her eyes became wide and her hand went to her heart because she found it hard to breathe.
“It might be hard to face it, Lexa,” Maximus’ voice turned soft probably because he could see her face turning pale. “I know. It is hard for me too. But we have to address it. You went and killed yourself without settling it with him because you couldn’t get over him and…”
His voice was soft. His eyes were mellow. He reached out his hand to hold her. If not for all these behaviors, Alexandra would have believed that this is not her Tubby.
It must be this place, she thought. It is this place that makes them this way.
The last time she was here, Luke accused her of having a secret relationship with Tubby, and this time Tubby accuses her of still being in love with Luke.
Why would she be in love with that man who hurt her? How could she not love the man in front of her, broken as he is, trying to comfort her even when he thinks that she is in love with someone else?
She was hurt he didn’t understand her. But more than anger, she found her heart getting ballooned with the feelings she has for Maximus.
This man in front of her destroys himself to “help” her get over her past love..? He is doing unnecessary things thinking he is helping her. And not only that he is taking other people’s lives with that too.
She cannot allow this to continue. She was not accepting his behavior, but she could understand him and she didn’t want to get mad at him even though she wants to.
“No, Tubby. You are misunderstanding,” she said, accepting his embrace. Placing her hand on his chest, she leaned on him. “It was over between me and him the moment I saw him kissing another woman in front of me. I was affected by what he did to me with his ministers. But what pushed me to~”
“It was because you could not bear to hurt him and you were depressed. It’s because you still couldn’t get over him and-”
“Maximus!” she interjected him and looked at his face. “That is not what-”
She wanted to tell him that when she saw him getting back to kill Luke, not even willing to answer her question about the kiss they shared, it broke her. And that’s why she decided to leave that place. She thought nobody cared for her.
“Enough, Alexandra!” he shouted making Alexandra’s heart skip a beat. “I can accept the truth. You don’t have to lie for my sake! I saw it! Well, it might not be love. But you were a slave for him, Lexa. You are still feeling that lingering attachment to him. I know, it must be hard for you too. But he… I saw the records of what happened to our Legion after both of us passed. He did what he couldn’t do to us to them. They were all…” his voice shook.
“Did I tell you what happened to me when I was held in the prison cell? You weren’t able to look at me and healed me. But do you know what that monster got me through? I was torn apart, Lexa. I was…” he let out a deep breath.
Alexandra’s eyes watered. She understood that he must have gone through a lot. She healed him and it was overwhelming for her. He was on the brink of death. Too bad she couldn’t put a spell on him to forget those tortures.
“Did the men in our legion were put through the same pain, Max?” she asked.
Her heart hurt. She did a lot of wrong in her past life. She wronged everyone who trusted her and was loyal to her. She was only caring about love. In the name of love, she became the henchman of the wicked Luke and towards the end, she decided not to continue once she felt alone.
The betrayal of Luke did play a part in the decisions she made in her final moment although it wasn’t the decisive one. So Maximus is not entirely wrong here.
“Yes,” Maximus’ voice shook and he got to her. Placing his hands on her shoulders softly, he leaned on her shoulder. “I let them down too, Alexandra… If only I didn’t decide to follow you… The guilt I feel towards them… Do you remember little cabbage? They tortured him for…that poor boy and every one of them…He recorded it all, Lexa. That animal… he recorded the sufferings and even the last words of the men of our legion… Some thought that we will come and rescue them right till the end…They didn’t believe that we were dead, Lexa…They trusted us and…”
Alexandra placed her shaking hand over his broad back and rubbed it. Tears rolled down her cheeks. She is correcting the mistakes of her past little by little. She eradicated the monsters and she killed Morfan. But the lives that were taken away in the past… the life they missed because of her stupidity… How will she return it to them?
“And now,” Maximus stood straight and his eyes reddened with rage. “He is here. I am wearing his face and people are calling me the reincarnation of that monster…” he clenched his jaws and fisted his hands so tight that the veins in his arms popped out.
“I will show them who that monster was! I will prove to them that I – the reincarnation of that monster is a monster. Through me history will be rewritten. The Great King was a monster! A Brute! He never valued human lives or any lives… Everyone will see that,” he said and his lips curved dangerously. “And that monster…His people will face the same fate as our men. I will see to it. I will~”
“But, Tubby…” Alexandra held his hands and stopped him. She saw the darkness in his soul rising, consuming him. He doesn’t have much time.
[He is affected too much by his appearance and by people calling him Luke’s reincarnation. Ah! How did he end up with this face? How did Tubby become a Lukyan?]
She tried to figure out the answer to that question a lot, but she couldn’t. She didn’t think there is a possibility that Tubby would become a Lukyan. She needs to address this issue and Maximus needs to confront this issue too. This is making his feelings dark.
She looked around to see a few heads peeking from behind the pillars. They won’t be hearing what they are talking but they were all smiles seeing that they are fighting.
“How can you hurt innocent people for this? How is what you are doing different from what he is doing? Do you think he cares for anyone? Do you think he would miss~”
“Hahaha… I expected that you will say this.” He walked closer to her and bent to her eye-level. “You know where he is, right? Why don’t you tell me? I will end him and his stinky supporters. Then we can call it an end. No more innocents will get to suffer.”
His warm breath fell on her face and his lips curved to a smirk. “Tell me, Lexa.” He appeared to have already reached a decision.
“I won’t. Do you even hear yourself, Tubby? Can you see why you are wrong?”
“No! Where am I wrong? Can’t you see it, Lexa? It’s the lingering attachment that makes you say these things. Why do you care about those moles that live underground? They chose to have that imbecile as their master. Shouldn’t they be~”
“That’s enough of it, Maximus!” Alexandra shouted and stopped him from speaking further.
She saw those poor people there. They didn’t choose Arioch to be their leader. They have no choice. They have lost all hope and no knowledge that they have fallen into the traps of a very manipulative and selfish man, they are thinking of him as their savior.
“What do you want me to do? Kill Arioch? Kill anyone who follows him? Show myself to these scums?” she pointed at the men hiding behind the pillars trying to find out what is spoken between them.
“If they think that you are the Great King, should I slice off your head to show them that I am better?” She turned around. “Should I defeat you, Maximus Lukyan? Should I tell others that I hate the Lukyan bloodline?” she shouted. “Will that do?”
Her eyes started to glow with a silvery sheen. The entire place got silent as even the air got drained out. The atmosphere turned heavy and it became hard to breathe.
She started to glow like the moon and her hair started to flutter.
“Save His Majesty! This woman is threatening the Emperor!”
The cowards hiding behind the pillars shouted for the help of others. That’s all these men can do. Incite others to do their bidding when they never will take any risk.
Alexandra didn’t mind the approaching sound of the soldiers. Maximus didn’t either. He was just staring at her without even drawing his sword.
“You want me to destroy this place, huh, Maximus? Do you think it is hard for me to destroy this place? Why do you think I didn’t? Why?” she asked.
