Heart sat in the back of the car holding Num tightly to his body. She cuddled into his shirt completely silent, awake, but utterly still.

Heart gulped, and pet her silky soft chubby body, pressing the fluffy fur down gently into her sides, before scratching her nose the way she liked. The one thing she would always rub back with, the one thing that would get her instantly purring. Or looking like she was about to sneeze.

She didn’t budge an inch, not even to lift her nose by a hair’s breadth upwards. Nothing.

Heart felt the tears well up in the corner of his eyes.

He didn’t even know when it had happened or how he had gotten anywhere but the house. All he could do was hold Num tightly.

But he was aware of being led into the car, of driving to the vet, and of heading inside.

The whole world fell behind him as the doors opened and he looked their Park Gangjin in the face. The bent-over little Korean man had so many wrinkles layered atop wrinkles, that each wrinkle looked as it had its own family tree.

“Mr. Park… Something is wrong with Num.” Heart said, gulping back the sticky feeling inside his throat so that it wouldn’t overwhelm him.

Park Gangjin nodded slowly and reached out his arms. Heart held onto Num for a moment longer before reluctantly handing her over. The vet allowed Heart to stroke her head a few times before he turned around and shuffled off with Num in his arms just expecting Heart to follow.

Heart paced beside him, keeping his strides short so that he could match his stride with the shorter man.

“Has she been eating as usual?”

Heart glanced over at the doctor for a moment before returning his gaze on Num.

“I think so…” He stated uncertainty.

“You think so?”

“Hmmm, I see.”

“How about water, has she been drinking normally?”

Heart chewed on his bottom lip.

“I don’t know.” He responded. They turned the corner into the small exam room that the vet used.

Dr.Park Gwangjin put Num down on the table and very carefully began inspecting her.

“Has she been exercising or exhibiting any kind of weird behaviors lately? Is she jumping from object to object, okay or did she seem to be struggling?”

Heart sniffled. “I don’t know… I honestly don’t have any idea. I got a job recently to try and save up some money. We have been wanting to move to a nicer area for Min. It’s not safe where we live… And I… I got wrapped up in school and work… I am such a bad dad.” Heart cried despondently.

Park Gwangjin stopped examining Num for a moment and reached out his hand. Heart watched him and he placed his hand atop Heart’s arm and squeezed gently.

“It’s okay. I promise we all get busy in life. You have a lot on your platter, you are a good kid Heart.”

“And most importantly, you noticed something was wrong with her and brought her here as soon as you can. That is all Num could ask for.”

“Num used to be a full-on street cat, she is a fighter. Don’t worry and just go rest out there in the waiting room. You can’t do anything back here for her and she can sense your mood. You will end up causing her a bit of anxiety if she senses you like this.”

“But.” Heart protested weakly.

“Go, we have lots of tests to do to find out what is going on. Go wait with Min, she must be feeling upset too. I mean this, after her fall in the market the other day. She must be distraught and that kinda tension won’t be good for the twins.”

“Okay, okay, I am goi… ”

“Wait? What?.” Heart stopped.

“Twins?” Heart asked, stunned.

“Oh my goodness. You didn’t know, I just assumed she would have told you by now, she was so excited when she found out. So was Tee. He was really excited to be a dad.”

“I assumed you knew since Plern came back raving about it.”

Heart paused, stunned and trying to pull himself together long enough to process the news.

‘He was going to be an uncle. Min was pregnant… Of course, that’s the only way you can become an uncle, you idiot.’

‘But… But. Num might be sick, and I haven’t earned enough to help Min and Tee buy a new apartment together. I had just barely scraped together enough to cover a good enough wedding gift to Tee’s family. We are not giving them in-laws, or a family that they can have to help them out in any way. All Min and I were able to contribute to the family was our love. I at least wanted to be able to give them a good wedding blessing. But now, now, it will have to be the smallest tier of a wedding blessing.’

But I am going to be an uncle.. An uncle. Not just once, but twice… Heart trudged back to the front completely flabbergasted with himself.

‘Ah, how bad of a brother am I? I didn’t even know. Min was struggling all alone without me. I couldn’t even see the signs. They were there. She always sounded tired on the phone. Her feet and back hurt every time he stopped by to grab something. And she had started wearing baggier and baggier clothes. The house was getting cleaner almost as if she were cleaning for something or someone… And I never… God, how did I not notice?’

‘I am so daft… I can’t even be a brother right. How can I be an uncle, not one kid either, but twins?’

‘How did I miss all the signs? How did I become so selfish that I forgot to look and care about Min. She was the reason for everything I did, everything.’

‘… Until she wasn’t…’ Heart’s brain taunted him. He looked up and was surprised to see the entire entrance of the small clinic littered with the standing and sitting bodies of all of his friends. One, High, Nine, Nice, Tone, Ring, Mark and Ten were all loitering about and the door opened. Saint stepped inside, followed by Kit. Saint stepped towards him, but Heart turned away to gaze at Min.

Absolutely stunned.

Tee hugged her tightly, resting his hand gently on her tummy, and Heart stared at the innocent yet sweet gesture.

‘God, how did I miss it?’

‘How could I have been so blind?’

“I hope you don’t mind. I saw how upset you were and called all of them here. I wanted you to feel less.”

‘Wow, even now you are being so selfless and thinking about my pain. But what about your own Min?’

“Min, you are pregnant! I’m really going to be an uncle?” Heart blurted interrupting Min.

Min’s mouth dropped open in shock as did everyone else.
