Sweet Chief Secretary - Chapter 466
Chapter 466 A Bold Assumption
Xia Yu looked at the time and felt it was almost time to go. She drank up the champagne in her glass. Then she stood up and was about to leave when Shen Yan came to stand in front of her again.
“I want to have a word with you.” Shen Yan grabbed her arm and fixed his eyes on her.
“Then say it.” Xia Yu didn’t want to quarrel with him here, so she lowered her voice.
“Let’s go outside first.” Shen Yan drew her hand, walking outside. Xia Yu hesitated for a second, but she still followed him to go out.
After they went into the car, Xia Yu found that he didn’t look as gloomy as before. She thought in her mind that his discontent and anger might have been soothed partly.
“I haven’t eaten yet.” Shen Yan said in low spirits.
Was it all he wanted to say? He was a grown-up. If he didn’t have dinner, he could find a restaurant to eat casually. What was the use of telling her? However, Xia Yu believed it was better not to retort in case of making his mood worse.
“Where’s Aunt Ma? Hasn’t she cooked the meal?” Xia Yu asked.
“She went to the old house to lend a hand since there are many things to be done.” Shen Yan answered with no expression.
Since she went back to the old house, why didn’t you go back to have meals? How stupid! “Any food ingredients in the fridge? I will cook for you after we return.”
Hearing that Xia Yu would cook for him, Shen Yan immediately relieved his eyebrows from tension and agreed. He then continued to say, “Nothing left.”
“Go and buy some, then. Drive the car!” Xia Yu was a bit annoyed and said.
Since they were in a relationship, Xia Yu cooked more frequently for him. No matter how many dishes she cooked, he would eat them up.
She smiled bitterly in her heart and thought that she had spoiled his appetite.
They got out of the car. When they headed for the supermarket, Shen Yan reached out his hand, trying to hold Xia Yu’s waist.
Xia Yu subconsciously tried to avoid it, but he didn’t withdraw his hand. Considering that there were quite a lot of people around them, Xia Yu didn’t want to make a fuss, so she just let it be.
After they were in the supermarket, he bought many food ingredients. Xia Yu teased him. “Are you going to ask me to cook a grand banquet for you?”
“If you can, I’m willing to eat.” He said with his eyebrows lifted and then continued to put food ingredients into the shopping trolley.
When they checked out, they got three large bags. He carried the two heaviest bags while Xia Yu was given the lightest one.
Though they bought a lot, Xia Yu only cooked three dishes, fried beef tenderloin, scrambled eggs with tomatoes as well as meatball and white gourd soup. Those meatballs were hand-made with lean meat one by one. Because it was at night, and she was afraid that if she cooked too many meatballs and Shen Yan ate them all, he would have ingestion problems.
While she was cooking, Shen Yan stood at the door of the kitchen and stared at her, which made Xia Yu feel that her back was almost torn up by his stare. Sometimes, she looked back suddenly, only to find the deep sorrow in his eyes. However, the sorrow was so transitory, which made her think it was an illusion.
Xia Yu brought the last dish, scrambled eggs with tomatoes, to the table while Shen Yan helped to arrange the chopsticks as well as bowls and filled the bowls with rice.
Compared with his devouring in the past, he now was used to eating in no hurry.
During the meal, there was a knock on the door. Shen Yan changed his color. He stood up and walked to the door. Then he opened the door. Hearing him say “First Aunt”, Xia Yu’s heart was lifted to her throat because as long as she appeared, there would be trouble for her. But Xia Yu pretended to be calm, and she stood up, too. She looked at the person who came in and then greeted. “Aunt!”
First Madame immediately changed her color after she saw Xia Yu. “Shen Yan, why should this woman be here?”
Xia Yu looked at Shen Yan as well, wondering what he would say.
“First Aunt, why did you say that? It is normal that my girlfriend stays with me here.” Shen Yan said to First Madame, walking to Xia Yu and reaching out his hand to hold her waist with intimacy.
His words stirred Xia Yu’s heart when she heard, which was hard to describe in words. However, in front of First Madame, she could not retort him, so she could only let him say so.
First Madame’s eyes showed chillness, but she didn’t seem to be surprised. Perhaps, upon seeing Xia Yu after she came in, she came to realize the relationship between them in her mind. But she was unwilling to believe it, so she scolded angrily, “Shen Yan, you’re making a fuss! You’ve broken up with her and canceled the engagement! How could you tell me that you are still with her now? What will you do to explain to our relatives?”
“Explain what? When did I say that I would cancel the engagement? How strange!”
Shen Yan’s reply obviously provoked her, and she looked gloomier and gloomier. Xia Yu had thought she would make a fuss before she left angrily. However, she said that she wanted to have a word with Xia Yu.
“Shall we have dinner first before having a word? First Aunt, if you don’t have dinner, why not eat with us?” Shen Yan gestured Xia Yu to sit down and continued to eat.
Xia Yu glanced at Shen Yan opposite her, who looked calm. Then, she glanced at his First Aunt, who looked helpless and turned around to sit on the sofa in the sitting room.
When Shen Yan put down his chopsticks, Xia Yu was about to put away. But he said, “You go and have a word with my First Aunt. She has waited for you for a long while. Leave this to me.”
Xia Yu agreed. She looked calm, but in fact, she was nervous and anxious in her heart. Shen Yan seemingly perceived her inner emotions, so he comforted her with a smile. “It is fine. Don’t worry. You talk to her first, and then I will join you.”
She followed First Madame to the balcony. The balcony was big with a tea table and several chairs. She took a seat and sat down opposite Xia Yu.
As she looked carefully at her, she found that First Madame looked much older than before and her hair on the temples turned grey. Only a few days passed. She had seemingly lived a hard life recently. This is the sorrow of living in a big family!
“Xia Yu, you really make peace with Shen Yan? Don’t you mind his past with Zeng Mina?” First Madame stared at Xia Yu’s eyes. Wasn’t it true that people said she had a passion for cleanliness in the relationship? Why didn’t she mind it? What was wrong?
First Madame asked herself three questions consecutively in her heart.
Her questions were tough for Xia Yu to answer. To be honest, if it was only about the relationship between Shen Yan and Zeng Mina, it would not be so tricky actually.
When she got to know Shen Yan, he was a famous and amorous playboy already. What was more, she even helped him deal with his pursuers. Since she accepted him and his relationship with Zeng Mina had passed, she decided to keep it out of her mind.
But the problem was not only his relationship with Zeng Mina, but many other things were entangled, which made Xia Yu feel bored and want to break up with him.
Considering that Shen Yan said so aloud just now that they were still together, Xia You thought it would embarrass him too much if she bluntly explained and said that they had broken up and she no longer cared about his past and whom he was with in the past or would be with in the future.
“Aunt, you also said that it was the past. Everyone has a past. What’s more, I don’t think it is possible that Shen Yan has such a past with Miss Zeng.” Xia Yu said indifferently.
“But it is quite possible!” First Madame curled her lips and said.
“Isn’t it obvious? Shen Family, which is a rich and famous family, will never agree to let Miss Zeng get engaged to Young Master Mo if she really has a past with Shen Yan. Old Madame will be the first one to object.”
Her words silenced First Madame for a long time when she said so. Indeed, what Xia Yu said was true. If they really had a past, Shen Family would never agree to their engagement.
But First Madame didn’t give up. She asked, “Then why did you break up with Shen Yan? Is it because of Li Wen? To be honest, that boy is nice to you indeed. You have a good eye.”
Anyway, First Madame would never accept the fact that Xia Yu was still with Shen Yan. She continued to find reasons to separate them.
“Aunt, you misunderstood. Li Wen and I are only good friends. That’s all.”
“How come? Don’t forget that you put up at his home.”
First Madame tried to prove it in a hurry. Shen Yan was lack of backbone and was determined to tie the knot with Xia Family. Didn’t he care about her disloyalty which was so important to him?
“Aunt, what’s wrong with putting up at a friend’s home? I believe that many people have the same experience. If it is deserved to be suspected, there will be no innocent people in the world.” Xia Yu bluntly retorted First Madame.
Xia Yu was not the one to blame. First Madame’s words were so insulting that no one could endure, let alone Xia Yu.
“Xia Yu, I know you’re glib, but I want to kindly remind you. Don’t do anything that you’ll regret.” First Madame stood up and walked outside angrily.
After seeing her off, Xia Yu stayed there for a while. She thought that First Madame was so interesting for all she did was to come here to inform her of these things. At this moment, First Madame’s harsh voice came from the sitting room again. “Shen Yan, you’ll never defeat your elder brother! Never!”
Instead of hearing Shen Yan’s voice, a sound of patting the door rang through quickly. After a short while, Shen Yan came to the side of Xia Yu. “She probably saw you come back with me. That’s why she came to make a fuss.”
“What a complex family! How chaotic!” Xia Yu shook her head. She took the teacup in front of her and sipped it. “Now we can have a talk.”
“That day when I walked out of the hospital, Zhou Yan had a long talk with me. He insisted that my elder brother killed Ningjing. I know he has told you that my brother and I are in tension now. But I still can’t doubt him for this. He loves Ningjing so much. It’s impossible for him to do that.” Shen Yan stared at Xia Yu and said, “I know that he has spoken ill of my brother in front of you, which makes you negative and unhappy, but I hope you can calm down and think it over.”
Didn’t he mean that her break-up with him was because she couldn’t accept such a complicated relationship between them? In fact, Xia Yu did mind it, but what Zhou Yan said to her was not taken into consideration.
But since he mentioned Ningjing, Xia Yu felt like having a talk with him, and that was why she came here. “Zhou Yan did say something to me. Besides, he wanted me to persuade you to join him in investigating your brother. At the beginning, I really thought he was very ridiculous and turned him down. However, what he said to me that day when Xi Xi was in the hospital made me suspect that it was possible that Ningjing was murdered by someone.”
“All in all, you still trust Zhou Yan and suspect my brother.” Shen Yan was told by Zhou Yan that Aunt Jiang was afraid of seeing the image of dragons. But this clue was not enough to deduce that Ningjing was murdered by Shen Mo. Shen Yan really didn’t believe it.
“I mean that it is possible that Ningjing was murdered, but I don’t mean that your brother did it.” Xia Yu tried to calm Shen Yan down first and then explained to him slowly. “These days I have been thinking it over. Do you think it is possible that Aunt Jiang happened to see that Ningjing was killed by the murderer but she hid herself out of fear and pretended to say that she went to do some shopping? But when Ningjing breathed her last, Shen Mo just showed up and he thought that her asthma broke out. He intended to help but he did a disservice. But just at that moment, Zeng Ziqiang and Li Tianci appeared. They accused him of murder.”
“You mean that Zeng Ziqiang threatened my brother with it, making him work for Zeng Family and even marry Zeng Mina?” Shen Yan was always aware that Zeng Ziqiang had something on Shen Mo, but he didn’t know what it was. If Xia Yu’s supposition was likely, it was plausible.
“I had the same feeling as well at the beginning. But when I saw the dragon tattoo on Li Tianci’s body, I made a bolder supposition. If Zeng Ziqiang was always determined to let Zeng Mina marry Shen Mo, who loved Ningjing deeply, his plan would never come true anyway as long as Ningjing was alive. In order to marry Zeng Mina into Shen Family and get the power of Shen Group, do you think it is possible that Zeng Ziqiang was desperate to kill Ningjing for this?” Xia Yu continued to say.
