The Alpha’s Companion - Chapter 65
Lacey was so tired that she hated to move from the bed but started feeling hungry. In fact, more than hungry; she was famished. “Give me a minute and I’ll be ready to go to dinner.”
“No.” He held her tightly to him like a life-sized doll.
“But the chef—”
“Will keep it warm,” Julien finished. But then her stomach grumbled loudly, giving her away. He raised up and looked at her. “See? I told you that you were pregnant!”
“What?” Lacey asked, pushing against his shoulder playfully. “When your stomach growls, it means you’re hungry, not pregnant.”
“Well, let’s examine the facts, shall we?” He pulled her to his chest again.
“You’re enjoying this.”
“Immensely.” Then he leaned back, feigning that he was thinking. “Now… where was I? Oh, yeah! Exhibit one!” He held up one finger. “You were so tired that you fell asleep when you came upstairs, when usually, you could still jog around the block after a full day of working out.”
“But—”
He held up two fingers, stopping her. “Exhibit two! Your stomach is rumbling, and extreme hunger is a tell-tale sign of pregnancy.”
“But, but—”
Julien held up three fingers. “And last but not least, exhibit three!” He pointed triumphantly to her stomach and smirked. “You have a baby bump.”
“No, I most certainly do not!” Lacey gasped, running to look in the mirror.
Julien cackled loudly behind her, enjoying her discomfort way too much. Then he came up behind her and touched her stomach from behind. “See? Baby bump.”
When Lacey looked in the mirror, her normally flat lower stomach had a bit of a pooch. “Oh, I think it’s just wishful thinking.” She slapped him playfully on the shoulder and then headed back to the bedroom and slipped into a robe. But she had to admit, she was so tired that if she laid back down, she wouldn’t get up until morning. “Would you mind if we ate in tonight?” Then she collapsed on the chair in a little reading nook beside the bed.
Julien chuckled. “Not a problem.” Then he crossed the room and kissed her on the top of her head and whispered, “Stay in here and I’ll tell you when it’s ready.”
Lacey nodded. “Wake me up if I accidently fall asleep.”
Julien didn’t say another word but chuckled all the way out to the living room.
Lacey thought about what Julien had said. Of course, if she were pregnant, it would be too early to tell, even if she got pregnant on their wedding night. But she was pleased that Julien was so happy about the prospect. But one thing was true: With Julien wanting her to be pregnant this badly, if she weren’t pregnant yet, she would be soon.
But Lacey wanted to wait until after the Wildclaw threat was over. She didn’t want to bring a child into a world with the threat of impending violence at every turn. But Lacey knew that when she did become pregnant, then everything would work itself out.
Soon the food came, and Julien popped his head around the corner and winked. “Dinner’s ready.” Then he disappeared back around the corner just as quickly as he had appeared.
When Lacey stood, she felt a bit lightheaded. But there was no way that she could be exhibiting this many symptoms of pregnancy this early. No, what she needed was more rest. She stood, synched up her robe, and then headed into the living room and dining area. But she wasn’t expecting what she saw entered.
Roses… long-stemmed red roses… filled every corner of the room as the strong, beautiful scent of roses filled the air.
“How did you… when did you…?”
Julien laughed, enjoying her reaction. Then he took her hand and led her to the dining table. “I’ve waited a long time for this.”
“But we don’t even know for sure—”
“Ssshh….” He gently pressed his finger to her lips. “I know enough.” Then he kissed her forehead and said, “Let’s eat.”
As she sat at the dining table and the heavenly aroma of spaghetti and meatballs wafted toward her, her stomach growled, causing her to forget everything else.
Then he reached over and kissed the inside of her wrist. “Enjoy.”
She let out a deep breath. “Julien, I don’t want you to be disappointed if I’m not—”
“Let’s just enjoy our meal and take it a day at a time.” Julien released her hand and then twirled spaghetti around his fork, pressing it against the huge spoon. Then he gave her a sexy grin and gave her another wink.
Lacey studied him for a moment, and he hadn’t looked this happy in all the time she’d known him. And if this one little fantasy made him happy, then so be it.. She would deal with the aftermath later.
