The Alpha’s Companion - Chapter 67
Lacey ran into the kitchen just as quickly as she could and Chef Mastrano was standing there. He was smiling when he first saw her, but his smile quickly faded when he saw the look on Lacey’s face.
“Alpha Queen….” The chef guided her to a nearby chair. “You don’t look well. Are you okay?”
Lacey sat and placed a hand to her head, taking a moment to catch her breath, calm her heart, and stop her hands from shaking. “Thank you. I’m so sorry—”
“No. Do not apologize,” Chef Mastrano said in his thick, Italian accent. “You just take a moment to relax.”
Lacey nodded, taking the glass of water he offered. She had intended to take just a sip but ended up drinking down half the glass. “Chef, have you seen Julien?”
He shook his head. “No, I haven’t.” Then a crease formed between his eyes. “Would you like me to have something brought up for you tonight?”
Lacey nodded. “Yes, please.” She let out a deep breath. “Anything you recommend will be fine.” Then she stood and handed him the glass of water. “Thank you.”
“Alpha Queen,” Chef Mastrano said, bringing her to a stop. When she turned around, he gestured to the chair. “Please. Sit for a few minutes more. I’ll send someone to find Alpha Grey—”
“No. That won’t be necessary.” Then she gave him a slight smile and headed back up the stairs. But it seemed eerily quiet. No one was in the halls. But Lacey shrugged it off, thinking that everyone was probably in the Main Dining Hall eating dinner, including Julien. But she was surprised that he hadn’t come to their room to let her know.
She quickly hurried to their room and closed the door behind her. She could just about kill Brock for this… making her feel afraid in her own castle. But she shrugged it off, squaring her shoulders. She was the Alpha Queen, after all, and would not show fear to anyone. She headed over to the huge picture window and looked out at the practice ring and the forest. All of a sudden, a feeling a calm washed over her. At that moment, she knew why this was one of Julien’s favorite spots.
Then she looked closer to the practice ring and there were three figures standing in the dark. One looked like Scar, and reached up and kissed a huge, hooded figure.
“Rex….” Lacey knew that Scar was up to something, but cavorting with Rex? That was way beyond treason. “I have to tell Julien.”
There was a knock on the door, and she knew her meal had arrived, but she had to get to Julien first. But when she flung the door open, Raye and Brock were on the other side.
Brock tilted his head to the side, taking her in. “Hello, Alpha Queen.”
Lacey tried to slam the door closed, but they both pushed it open… and walked in. Lacey backed up into the room, looking for something, anything she could use as a weapon. “Julien will kill you for this!”
Raye shook his head. “No. I don’t think he will.”
Lacey felt the tremors rush down her spine and throughout her limbs, and the red haze with black edges colored her vision… and exploded into her wolf, sending the coffee table flying against the wall, along with the lamp that had been setting on a side table. She grabbed Rae’s shoulder and threw him out the picture window through the glass, sending him flying five stories to the ground.
“Sorry but this is for your own good,” Brock said, shoving a needle into her shoulder.
She yelped and then immediately started changing back. “What did you do to me?” she asked, falling to the floor.
Brock grabbed her robe and wrapped it around her. “This could have been so much easier if you would have just joined forces with us.” Then he scooped her into his arms and carried her out, but whatever he had given her made her too weak to fight.
“Where are you taking me?” Lacey’s head lulled over his arm as he carried her down the hallway in the opposite direction of the main stairs.
At the end of hallway, Brock kicked one of the panels and it opened up to a hidden staircase. In her state of delirium, she wondered if Julien knew about this. Brock ran down the five flights of stairs carrying her with ease. Then he moved around the castle, keeping in the shadows, and they passed Raye’s body, lifeless on the ground, his eyes fixed. Then he ran with her to the practice field.
“Is this her?” a deep voice asked.
“Oh, yeah.” Scar’s face appeared in her vision and smirked. “This is her alright.”
“Scar, I’m going to kill you….” Lacey said, too weak to hold her head up.
Scar laughed. “Not today, Alpha Queen.”
“I’ll take her,” the deep voice said, and then she was transferred to someone else’s arms. “So, you’re the Alpha Queen.”
When she looked up, he smirked from under his hood, his curly dark hair and features unmistakable.
“Rex,” Lacey said and then everything went black.
