The Alpha’s Companion - Chapter 74
As they ran from The Silver Pack Compound, Lacey hoped she would never see it again, or her family living there, either. They ran until the faint rays of morning sunshine began to peek through the clouds. The promise of a new day, a new beginning.
When they arrived at the compound, Lacey was exhausted, even though she rode the whole way. Luckily, none of the Silver Pack wolves had followed. For some reason, they had let them go. But now she realized why. They were coming here, to the castle.
Julien slowly bowed and then slowly lay down on the ground, and Lacey slid off. Then Gwen hurried to wrap a robe around her and started to help her in.
“No.” Lacey turned and Julien was slipping into a robe, too. She hurried to him and laid her head on his chest. “Thank you, Julien… My Alpha.”
The sincerity in his eyes touched her as he swept her into his arms. “Gwen, get Dr. Silva… now! Have him meet us in our suite. And have Chef Mastrano prepare her something.”
Gwen gave a quick curtsy. “Yes, Alpha Grey. Right away, sir.” Then she hurried inside to do his bidding.
Julien carried her all the way up the stairs and then laid her on their bed and covered her with a quilt. Then he sat beside her and tucked her in, ensuring she was safe. Then he lifted her hand to his lips and kissed it. “Are you alright?”
She nodded, giving him a weak smile. “Julien, I’m so sorry that I couldn’t run with you. Between not eating, and the drug they gave me to knock me out—”
“Ssshhh….” Julien pressed a finger gently to her lips. “No need to apologize.” Then he smirked. “You forget. I’ve seen you in action in all your glory… and you’re a force to be reckoned with.”
Tears slid slowly down her cheeks. “Not today, I wasn’t.” Then she gave his hand a gentle squeeze. “But thank you, Julien.”
Julien dried away her tears with the pad of his thumb, and then gently gripped her chin. “Lacey, don’t let your family destroy you. You’ll never have to see them again.” He bit his upper lip, obviously trying to calm himself. “Lacey, you don’t know how close I was to wanting to decimate the whole pack for what they did.”
“No, Julien—”
He gently touched her lips again. “But I don’t believe in taking down a whole pack just because of the actions of their Alpha.”
Fresh tears filled her eyes. “Julien, I’m so sorry….”
“You have nothing to be sorry for.”
Suddenly, there was a knock on the door. Lacey recoiled, but Julien gently kissed her lips, a worried look coloring his eyes. “It’s just the doctor or the chef at the door. No need to worry. I’m here.”
Lacey nodded. “I’m so sorry. I feel like a fool for—”
“You are not a fool. Far from it,” he cut her off. “Just get some rest.”
Tears filled her eyes as she watched him leave the room. Lacey gathered the quilt under her chin and rolled over onto her side when the doctor came in.
“Hello, Mrs. Grey,” Dr. Silva greeted Lacey as he came in and opened his bag. “Let’s get you checked out, shall we?”
Lacey smiled. “Sounds good. Thank you, doctor.” After Brock, Raye, and Scar betrayed her like they did, it was going to take a while before she would be able to completely trust someone again. But he was the Pack Doctor, after all. And if she couldn’t trust him, who could she trust?
“So, your husband said that they gave you a shot to knock you out?” Dr. Silva began.
Lacey nodded. “Yes. More than one, from what I understand.”
Dr. Silva asked her questions as he examined her and then checked her stomach, too. When he pushed on it, it hurt.
“Oh!” she said, sitting up.
A crease appeared between Dr. Silva’s eyes. “How long have you had this pain?”
Lacey shrugged. “I haven’t been feeling well for a few days now and I started vomiting, too. Julien thinks I’m pregnant. But if I am, I’m in the early stages. I feel really weak, too.”
The doctor nodded. “Let’s take a pregnancy test first. But if you’re not pregnant, you may have appendicitis.”
“Appendicitis?” Lacey’s voice rose several octaves.
He patted her hand. “But from the look of it, you’re dehydrated, too. I’ll need to admit you in the hospital just to make sure.”
“Hospital?” Lacey panicked even thinking of it.
“Yes,” he replied. “But don’t worry. It’s more of a precaution than anything else. I’d rather be safe than sorry. If everything is fine, then you can go home tomorrow. But the IV will replenish the fluids you’re missing anyway, so win win.”
Lacey let out a deep breath. “Can’t you do it at your clinic?”
Dr. Silva shook his head. “No. If you do have appendicitis, then we’ll need to operate right away.”
“Yes, but I’m a shifter,” Lacey replied. “Won’t that cause a problem at the hospital?”
“No, the physiology is the same between humans and shifters with just a few minor exceptions,” he replied. “Also, I’ll be the one doing the surgery, so it won’t be a problem.”
Lacey sighed. She hated to have to leave the castle as soon as she arrived. “No. Take me to your clinic and run the tests here in the castle. Then if it is appendicitis, then I’ll go to the hospital.”
“But Mrs. Grey—”
“I want to talk to Julien… now.” Lacey was finally home, and it would take a crowbar to get her out of the castle now.
Dr. Silva sighed.. “As you wish.”
