The Alpha’s Companion - Chapter 75
After Dr. Silva spoke with him, Julien came in and sat in a chair beside the bed. “I agree with Lacey. Let’s keep her in the castle and do the tests. If it comes back that she has appendicitis, then we’ll rush her to the hospital.” Then Julien thought of something. “Could you take the samples and run the tests here in our suite?” Julien sighed, shaking his head. “Lacey’s been through enough, and she really needs to rest.”
Dr. Silva nodded. “Against my better judgement, I’ll agree. But if she starts running a fever or has more abdominal pain, we’ll rush her to the hospital.”
“Agreed,” Julien replied.
“Both of you, please don’t talk about me as if I’m not here,” Lacey said.
Julien nodded, patting her leg. “Sorry, darling.”
Dr. Silva rummaged around in his bag and pulled out a slender box. Lacey knew it was a pregnancy test. “I want you to take this test now. I need to go downstairs to bring up some things that I’ll need, and I’ll be right back.” Then he looked over at Julien. “Do you have a spare room where I can stay the night? Since I’m not admitting her to a hospital, I don’t want to be far from her side… just in case.”
Julien nodded. “Yes. There’s a spare room on the other side of the living room. Will that suffice?”
The doctor nodded. “I’m sure it will be fine. I’ll let my mate know where I am, and I’ll be right back with my equipment. I’ll need to draw blood and send it away to have it analyzed. But before we go any farther, I need to know if you’re pregnant.”
Lacey nodded. “Thank you, doctor.” Even though Julien had been looking for her, he had someone fixe the broken window in their suite. So, it wouldn’t be a problem for Dr. Silva.
The doctor nodded, tilting his head to the side. “I’m glad to do it. In the meantime, I want you to have some soup. Let’s get some nutrients and fluids in you.” Then he looked over at Julien. “I’ll be right back.”
“Thank you, doctor.” Julien headed out the door. “Please follow me and I’ll show you the spare room.”
“Thank you.” Dr. Silva gave Lacey one last smile, and then headed out the door.
Lacey stared at the pregnancy test setting on the counter and sighed. She hoped she was pregnant, but she wouldn’t want their child to have suffered through the drugs they had given her to knock her out.
Lacey went to the restroom and followed the instructions on the box. A few minutes later, she had the results, but she was afraid to look, deciding to wait until Julien came back in.
Usually, she feared nothing, but looking at the pregnancy test sent shivers down her spine.
Lacey dressed in a comfortable lounging outfit. But just that little effort made her feel tired. She sat on the edge of the bed and tears filled her eyes just as Julien walked in.
“Hey, hey,” he cooed kneeling on the floor in front of her, placing his hands on her knees as he looked into her eyes. “It’s okay now. You’re safe.”
Lacey nodded, wiping the tears from her eyes. “I’m sorry. I must be coming down off the drugs and it’s making me so emotional.”
Julien ran his fingers through the side of her hair. “It’s all right. You have every right to be. You’ve just been traumatized by people you trusted. It’s going to take a bit for you to get back to normal.”
Then she looked into his eyes. “I took the pregnancy test.”
“And?” His eyebrows rose nearly into his hairline.
“And I don’t want you to be disappointed if I’m not.” Lacey breathed out, relieved at getting it off her chest. “I know how much you want a child—-”
“Yes, I do,” he cut her off. “But right now, I just want you to be safe and well. Everything else we can deal with as it comes.”
She nodded. “I’m glad to hear you say that.”
Julien patted her leg, his lips curling into a sexy smile. “Now. Are you ready to take a look?”
She nodded, smiling. He took her hand and they walked into the bathroom together… looked at the test… and it was negative.
Lacey stared at the test as tears ran down her cheeks. At that moment, she realized that wanted to be pregnant, despite the drugs or anything else. She wanted to have Julien’s baby.
“Come here.” He pulled her into his arms, letting her cry on his broad, muscular chest.
When Lacey looked up, tears were running down his cheeks, too. “I’m so sorry, Julien.”
“Ssshhh….” He pulled her to him again. “You have nothing to be sorry for. We’ll try again when you’re better and when it’s safe. But the most important thing right now is you getting better.”
“But I wanted to give you a child,” Lacey whispered softly against his chest.
He placed a finger under her chin, forcing her to look into his eyes. “The only thing I want right now is you. If I have you by my side, then we’ll get through everything else together.” A smile spread across his lips as he wrapped his arms around her waist. “Since I’ve met you, you’ve wormed your way into my heart. Your name is permanently engraved on my heart.”
Lacey nodded. “The same is true for me, too.” Then she looked into his eyes, never having felt so much love for someone in her life. “I love you, Julien.”
He smiled, catching a tear from her cheek. “I love you, too… always.”
And as Julien held her to his heart, she knew it was true.. His name was engraved permanently on her heart, too… and always would be.
