The Alpha’s Companion - Chapter 81
A security guard came in along with the nurse, who looked back and forth between them, not quite sure what to do. Lacey assumed that she was still in shock from nearly witnessing a murder.
“The police are on their way,” said the security guard. Then he looked down at the blood pooling through Lacey’s hospital gown. “I think you’d better get that looked at, ma’am.”
“Yes, yes!” The nurse finally came to her senses and led Lacey back to the bed. Then she turned to the guard. “Leave us, please.”
The guard nodded, concern coloring his face. “I’ll be right outside.”
“My husband will be back in a moment if you’d like to talk to him,” Lacey offered, laying back down on the bed.
He tipped his hat. “Yes, ma’am.” He gave her one last concerned look and then walked out, closing the door behind him.
“Could you stitch me back up?” Lacey asked the nurse. “Then I have to go home. I no longer feel safe here.”
A crease formed between the nurse’s eyes. The nametag on her uniform read SAMANTHA. “I’m afraid I can’t let you leave just yet. You just had an appendectomy and need time to recover. Also, the doctor hasn’t released you yet.” Samantha pulled up Lacey’s gown to look at the wound, and then balled up some gauze and applied pressure to her side to stop the bleeding. “I’ll be right back.” Then she hurried out.
“Will Dr. Lonan Silva please report to Room 3-626 stat?” Samantha’s voice rang out over the intercom. “Will Dr. Lonan Silva please report to Room 3-626 stat?”
The nurse came back in a moment later, bringing more gauze and bandages with her. She gave Lacey a slight smile. “Dr. Silva will be here in a moment.”
“Thank you,” Lacey said, trying to relax. “Could you bring me something for the pain please?”
Samantha nodded. “Yes, of course. I’ll be right back.”
The door was cracked open slightly and Lacey caught a glimpse of her husband. Julien was speaking in clipped, hushed tones to the security guard, his voice angry.
There was a knock on the door.
“Come in,” Lacey said, and Dr. Silva and Julien walked in.
“I need to go home,” Lacey said without pretense.
Julien reached over and held her hand. “Lacey, you don’t have to be afraid—”
“I’m not afraid,” Lacey cut him off. “But I need to go home. There’s more protection at the castle and I can rest up for what’s coming.” Lacey bit her lower lip and then released it.
A crease formed between Julien’s eyes as he tilted his head to the side. “What’s coming?”
Lacey nodded. “Scar said that we couldn’t handle what was coming. I have a feeling that the Wildclaws are planning another attack, and I’m afraid that The Silver Pack will be with them.” Lacey sighed. “It’s the only thing I can think of that would give the Wildclaws that many numbers.” Then she looked into Julien’s eyes. “Julien, she and Rex are planning a war.”
Julien sighed, shaking his head. “I can’t believe Scarlett would do something like this. She was loyal all these years—”
“But was she loyal to you or to Rex?” Lacey asked, trying to keep from wincing from the pain.
Dr. Silva sighed. “Well, let me take a look and see if you can be transported.”
“Thank you, doctor,” Lacey replied.
“I’ll be right outside.” Julien leaned over and kissed the top of her head, and then walked out.
“Doctor, whatever you gave me to counteract the drugs worked,” Lacey said. “Besides my side hurting from the surgery, I feel like my old self again.”
Dr. Silva nodded, his lips curling into a smile. “I’m glad you’re feeling better.” Then he moved her hospital gown aside. “Now, let’s take a look and see what damage has been done.”
The nurse came back in and assisted Dr. Silva as he cleaned the wound and took a closer look.
“Well, from the look of it, the interior sutures are untouched, but the exterior staples came loose. I’ll give you a local anesthetic before I re-staple it, and some antibiotics to ensure that infection doesn’t set in. Then you should be fine.” He sighed as he looked over at the nurse. “Samantha, could you give us a minute?”
She nodded. “Yes, doctor. Of course.” Then she walked out into the hallway.
Dr. Silva lowered his voice. “If you were human, there would be no way that I would even think about letting you out. But in your situation, I’m going to let you go home. Under the circumstances, you’ll be a sitting duck if you stay here. Also, I don’t know how I’ll explain you recovering so quickly to the staff.”
“Thank you, doctor.”
Dr. Silva nodded, giving her a smile. “Let me get you fixed up and I’ll speak with Julien about taking you back to the castle. But you’ll need guards posted continuously outside your suite until you are fully recovered, just in case.”
“That won’t be necessary.” Lacey sighed. “I should be safe at the castle.”
The doctor bit his lower lip as he shook his head. “After what you’ve been through, I don’t want to take any chances.” Then he patted her arm. “I’ll be right back.” He walked out into the hallway and started speaking to Julien and the nurse in hushed tones just outside the door.
The nurse came in a moment later. “Well, let’s get you cleaned up now, shall we?” Samantha’s voice sounded overly chipper. But what else could you say to someone who had just been viciously attacked and nearly murdered?
Lacey would be glad to get back to the castle so she could recover and start preparing for the upcoming Wildclaw attack. Now, they no longer had to guess.. A war was inevitable.
