The Alpha’s Companion - Chapter 82
“Okay, Mrs. Grey, you’re cleared to go home.” Later that day, Samantha looked at her as if she were crazy for leaving… and that the doctor was crazy for letting her go.
Lacey gave her a reassuring smile, sitting on the edge of the bed. “Thank you.”
“Here are your release papers.” Samantha shoved a clipboard in front of her. “Please sign here… and here….” She pointed to different places on the paper. When Lacey was finished, Samantha tore off the bottom copy and handed it to her. Then she tilted her head to the side. “When you get home, make sure you rest. You don’t want to open up your staples back up again.”
Lacey nodded, taken aback by her kindness. “Thank you.”
Samantha nodded as her lips curled into a smile. “A volunteer will be here to escort you out momentarily.”
And as if right on cue, a girl came in pushing a wheelchair. “Here you are!” she said, a bit too chipper, the kind of voice one uses with puppies or small children. “Are you ready to go home?”
“My name is Mrs. Grey,” Lacey said flatly, rising to her feet, “and I can walk.”
The girl’s smile quickly faded… along with her tone. “Well, Mrs. Grey, it’s my job to take you downstairs. And the way we are going to do this is in a wheelchair.”
Lacey sighed as she looked up at Julien. “Get her out of here, please.” With the girl’s attitude and quick change of demeanor, Lacey wasn’t going to take the chance that the girl wasn’t from the Wildclaws.
The girl’s eyes narrowed. “But Ma’am….”
Lacey tilted her head to the side. “Did Rex send you?”
“No.” The girl never batted an eye.
“Brock?”
“No.”
Lacey smirked. “Do you know who they are?”
“No.”
Lacey stood and looked down at the girl. “Go back to Brock and Rex and tell them that I’m not taking the bait.” Lacey had about enough of Rex, Brock, and Scar… and now she’d just about had enough of this girl, too. Lacey looked up at Samantha. “How long has she worked here?”
Samantha shrugged. “This was the first time I saw her.”
Suddenly, the girl took off running, but Julien was quicker and escorted her out.
Lacey looked up at Samantha again. “Not to sound paranoid, but would you mind wheeling me out?”
“I will.” Dr. Silva said, walking into the room. Then he glanced over at Samantha. “It’s okay. I’ve got this.”
Samantha forced a smile, obviously in shock from what had just transpired. “Okay, doctor.” Then she looked over at Lacey. “Take care of yourself.”
Lacey smiled. “Thank you. You, too.”
Dr. Silva locked the wheelchair and held it for Lacey while she climbed in. Then he unlocked it and wheeled her out of the room, headed toward the elevator.
“Where’s Julien?” Lacey asked, waving at the nurses as she passed.
Dr. Silva leaned in close. “Taking care of business.”
Lacey nodded, understanding his meaning. “Will he meet us outside?”
Dr. Silva wheeled her into the elevator and hit the down button. “I would assume so.”
A moment later, the elevator door opened on the bottom floor and Julien was standing there, waiting for her alone.
“Is everything okay?” Lacey asked, speaking of the girl.
He nodded, taking over pushing the wheelchair as Dr. Silva walked beside them. “Brogan has her. He’s going to take her back to the castle for questioning.”
Lacey sighed as he pushed her outside and to his truck that was waiting on the other side of the double doors.
“Are you okay?” Julien asked, lifting her easily from the wheelchair and setting her in the passenger side.
Lacey nodded. “I’ll just be glad when all of this is over, and we can get back to living a normal life.”
Julien chuckled, leaning in. “What’s normal?” He gave her a quick kiss and closed the door. Then he turned and thanked Dr. Silva and a moment later, Julien slid into the driver’s side and they were on their way.
“Julien, why do you think they want me so badly?” Lacey shook her head. “You would think that they would wait until the attack and kill me then.”
Julien looked at her, deadpan serious. “They don’t want to kill you.”
Lacey looked at him for a moment, and then nodded, understanding. “Rex wants me.”
Julien nodded. “Yes, I’m afraid so.”
“But why?”
Julien looked back into her eyes. “Because you’re mine.” He sighed and looked out the front window as he spoke. “He wants anything that’s mine.”
Lacey sighed. “But you’re brothers! You’re family.” She shook her head. “You two should be meeting at the local pub, talking about your packs, and just being family.”
“I wanted that. I really did. But now….” Julien shook his head. “There’s been too much water under the bridge.”
Lacey nodded, understanding. “Julien, what happened between you?”
He sighed and then reached over and patted her leg. “Let’s get you home first. You need to rest.”
Lacey nodded.. With all that was going on, she just hoped they both got there in one piece.
