The Alpha’s Companion - Chapter 92
In a short time, Lacey ran onto the grounds of The Harvest Moon Pack, along with Julien and The Shadow Pack. As wolves fought viciously in the clearing, it was clear they were under attack. Lacey took down two Wildclaws but saw that members of The Silver Pack were there, too. Lacey hated to have to fight her family, but if they knowingly stood against her and her pack, then she couldn’t just stand by and let it happen. At that moment, she resigned herself to take down whoever she had to and answer questions later. She was just glad that her mother wasn’t here to see this.
To the right, Koi was fighting a shifter and was losing.
Lacey grabbed the Wildclaw from behind and threw it across the practice field. “Get inside and guard the castle!” Lacey yelled to him.
“Aye, aye, My Alpha Queen!” Koi yelled, making a run for the castle.
Lacey was glad that he hadn’t argued with her. Then she remembered that her post was also inside the castle, so she ran across the lawn toward the castle, prepared to defend it at all cost. She saw a few other young shifters along the way. “Young warriors, it’s your duty to protect the castle!”
“Aye!” they yelled and all of them hurried to their posts.
In the foyer, Lacey started barking orders. “Kio and Magic! Guard the other end of the hall! Sheba and Eagan, upstairs! Guard the window! They may try and come in from the roof!” She barked orders at the other young warriors, and they all obeyed.
“Aye!” They all yelled in unison, already hurrying to their posts.
“Stay in your wolf forms until this is over!” Lacey yelled in the Pack Mind. They were her babies, but they were also their warriors. And it would take all of them to win this war. They must fight, all of them—down to the last man, woman, and child—to protect and defend the castle.
Suddenly, a bright red wolf strode slowly up the steps of the castle, saliva dripping from its mouth.
Scar.
“Alpha Queen,” Scar said in a sing-song voice within the Pack Mind, pacing back and forth on the landing just outside the doors, a vicious animal taunting its prey. “Come out and play!”
A low, guttural growl resonated from deep within Lacey’s chest. “Young warriors, man your posts! And no matter what you see outside, only open this door to me. Understood?” Even though Lacey knew that she shouldn’t leave her post, even to step right outside, the Big Bad Wolf was at the door, threatening her pack and her cubs, and she couldn’t stand idly by and let her get away with it. Not this time.
Scar laughed mentally. “You’re weak! You’ve always been weak!”
“I’m strong enough to take you down,” Lacey said, walking purposefully toward the door.
A sinister laugh erupted from deep within her chest. “Yeah, right! Don’t make me laugh! You couldn’t defeat me, even on your best day!”
Lacey ran outside, letting the door fall closed behind her. Then she sank her teeth into the scruff of Scar’s neck and threw her down the stairs, biting off a hunk of fur in the process. Lacey’s eyes flared as she spit out the fur and looked into Scar’s eyes. “Let’s dance.”
Scar smirked, blood running down the back of her neck as she walked slowly up the stairs. “I thought you’d never ask.”
Scar lunged toward her, but Lacey knocked her back. She had the high ground and she was going to defend it.
“Come on down, little Alpha Queen,” Scar taunted. “Come on down and play!”
Lacey growled as the battle rage around them, but she wasn’t going to leave her post. Not for Scar, Rex, or anyone.
All of a sudden, a wolf approached from the right on the landing and another jumped up on the left… and they all started closing in.
Determined to keep the high ground on the landing, Lacey leapt for the wolf on the left and threw him into Scar who was running up the stairs, causing them both to roll back down, just as the third wolf leapt for Lacey. But she grabbed it in mid-air and slammed him down onto the hard stone landing with all her might, stomped on its neck, and ripped off its head… letting it roll down the stairs. It came to a stop by Scar’s feet, immediately morphing into a man.
Lacey shrugged mentally. “One of your pets?”
“Gggrrrrooowwlll!!!” Scar leapt over the head toward Lacey, just as another wolf rushed her from the side. Lacey grabbed the wolf and threw it at Scar, knocking her back down. But suddenly, another wolf leapt over Scar and landed right beside Lacey. She immediately recognized the markings.
“Don’t do this!” Lacey yelled within her mind, but the other wolf couldn’t hear, for they were no longer members of the same pack.
The wolf leapt and Lacey had no choice. Hating herself for what she was about to do, Lacey ripped out its throat in mid-air and blood gushed from the wound. The body changed immediately, morphing into a human girl. A girl that she knew well.
Lynessa.
Lacey had just killed her sister. And telling herself that she had no choice didn’t make it any easier.
“Gggrrwooll!!” Rage filled Lacey’s body, letting her sister’s death get the best of her. She leapt toward Scar, knowing she shouldn’t abandon her post, but she was literally seeing red. Scar had made her kill her own sister and she was going to pay.
Scar leapt toward her, knocking her farther away from the door as two wolves leapt onto the landing. Outside, Koi and Maggie paced, their hackles standing on end, seething for the kill.
“Do not open that door!” Lacey yelled within the Pack Mind. “No matter what happens!”
“Aye!” They both yelled in unison.
Lacey knew she had to end this now, so she grabbed Scar and threw her at the two other wolves, knocking one off the porch and the other into the glass doors, cracking it. Seeing the crack, the wolf rammed it again, causing the angry crack to slither farther down the glass. Scar saw what was happening and rammed it, too, causing more damage.
At this rate, the door would give within the matter of seconds.
Lacey jumped up onto the landing, grabbed Scar from behind, and slammed her down onto the unforgiving stone landing.
“You’re weak!” Scar yelled, twisting out from under Lacey’s grasp. Taking Lacey by surprise, Scar flipped her onto her back, causing her side to open again. “You were never meant to be Alpha Queen! Julien was supposed to be mine!”
There wasn’t much time. Lacey rose to her feet, seething for the kill. “Julien is my Mate… he always has been and always will be.” Lacey stalked toward her, lowering her head, and raising her eyes, preparing to attack. “And you were nothing more than a pastime.”
“Gggrrooowwll!!!” Scar screamed, leaping toward her.
But Lacey went low, ramming her with her shoulder, flipping her over, and then stomped on her neck. Lacey looked into her eyes, one side of her lips curling into a snarl. “Scar, it didn’t have to be this way.”
Scar clawed desperately at her paw, but her claws found no purchase. “There was no other way!”
Lacey looked into her eyes and nodded mentally. “Then so be it.” Then she ripped off her head, letting it roll down the stairs. It morphed immediately into Scarlett’s human form, her mouth open, her eyes wide.
The other wolf leapt toward her, but she ripped out its throat in mid-air, and threw the body down the stairs to join Scar’s.
“Young warriors, sound off!” Lacey yelled, wanting to ensure their safety.
“Aye!” they all yelled in unison.
Although the battle was won, the war was far from over.
Suddenly, a huge wolf stalked toward her… with Victor’s head in its teeth. He flung it to the side, lowered his head as it looked up at her, blood dripping from its mouth. She recognized him immediately. For the red wolf stalking toward her…. was Rex.
