The Alpha’s Prisoner - Chapter 37
Violet walked for long minutes with her head full of thoughts and doubts.
Was she actually doing the right thing?
How would they react once they saw that she was back home? Would they be thrilled?
When she finally saw the walls from the Diamond Pack, her heart started to race and pound in a very annoying beat.
That was it, there was no turning back now.
One of the guards recognized her as soon as she approached the gates, and let her in immediately.
She took the path to the palace, bumping to some acquaintances on the way. But she wasn’t really in the mood to chat.
Once inside the palace, she went straight to Arden’s office. It was really rare not to find the man there, so she didn’t think twice before going in..
And she wasn’t wrong.
As soon as she passed the doors, she saw the man that raised her smoking his cigarette with a very calm and peaceful expression on his face.
That annoyed her more than she expected.
How could he seat like that while his adoptive daughter was being made a prisoner on the enemy’s territory?
“Arden.” she called, but his name came out as a knife cutting her throat from inside out.
The man looked at her surprised, almost choking with the smoke.
“Violet!” he yelled, raising his hands in the air as a sign of joy. “You’re back! Finally. I was worried that something had happened with you.” he said as he walked towards her.
Was he?
His arms wrapped Violet in a hug, but it wasn’t how she imagined it would be.
For weeks, once she was made a prisoner, all she wanted to do was to go back home and be hugged by her family, feel loved.
But his hug wasn’t warm like Jack’s, wasn’t full of affection and tenderness. It was cold and hollow.
“Hi.” she said. But she didn’t know what else she wanted to share with him, so she stayed quiet.
“How are you? Did they hurt you?” he asked scanning her body.
Now he was worried about her?
“I’m okay. They didn’t do anything to me.” she answered coldly.
Arden asked, actually he ordered, one of his servants to grab something for Violet to eat and to prepare a hot bath for her.
“Thank you.” Violet said to the servant before he left the room.
“Lance said he met you a few weeks ago, and you looked fine.” Arden continued, pulling Violet to sit on the couch.
“He did?” Violet raised her brows. “Why was he there anyway?”
“To rescue you, of course. He didn’t stop talking about you this whole time. It was a bit annoying actually. I told him you were going to be just fine.” Arden said with a smile, but all Violet wanted to do was punch his face.
She never thought she would think of Arden that way, but the fact that he wasn’t even demonstrating much concern about her pissed her off.
“How could you know I’m fine? I was made a prisoner for months!” she said with her teeth clenched. She couldn’t give any sign that was against him.
It would ruin the whole plan.
“You’re my daughter, aren’t you? I know that you’re capable of protecting yourself. That’s why I sent you on that mission.” Arden replied getting on his feet to grab another cigarette.
Violet took deep breaths to pull herself together.
At that moment, the servant came back with a tray full of food for her.
She thanked him and started to devour everything because she was actually really hungry.
Not that she was starving on Jack’s mansion, but since she left early without eating anything, her stomach was roaring.
“Poor Violet, they didn’t give you enough food, did they?” Arden said trying to sound sympathetic. But she didn’t believe in his worries. “Anyway, now you’re home and don’t have to worry about any of that. By the way, how was your mission?”
Violet choked with the juice and took a few seconds to recompose.
“What?”
“Well, I’m curious. You must have escaped from them after killing the man, right?”
Violet almost laughed in disbelief. How could someone think like that?
“Of course I didn’t kill anyone. Didn’t you hear that I was made a prisoner? They took the dagger from me and kept me in a dungeon.”
Of course she didn’t need to share the true details of the imprisonment.
She wasn’t really lying though.
“So they just let you go?” Arden asked suspicious.
Violet couldn’t tell him that either.
“Of course not. I took an opportunity to escape. They were testing me, that’s why Lance saw me the other day in the woods. I made them believe that I was on their side, so they relaxed a little.” Violet said immediately.
And she hoped she was a good liar, because Arden was really clever.
He couldn’t even dream about what she was doing.
A noise on the door took them out of their little confrontation and Violet turned to look who it was.
And her heart turned into something insignificant when she saw Gwen coming towards her.
She didn’t realize how much she had missed her sister until that moment.
And thinking about the fact that what she was doing would impact directly into Gwen’s life made Violet doubt her ability to go on with the plan
