The Alpha’s Prisoner - Chapter 60
Violet opened her mouth in shock, just like many others did.
No one was expecting that statement coming from her.
The troublemakers seemed excited about it, and gradually many others started to clap and cheer her. But there was still a few people that were still in shock.
Like Violet, for example.
A turmoil rose from the crowd, while Violet couldn’t take her eyes out of Gwen.
She didn’t recognize the woman standing on the stage anymore.
The way her voice sounded confident and decided when she declared that the man should die, felt different from anything Violet had ever seen her do..
And her eyes…
Gwen’s eyes had a different glow as well.
Violet couldn’t believe that was her sister, the woman that had grown and was raised by her side.
“Oh, my God…” she murmured for herself.
But Jack listened.
Looking at her with very concerned eyes, Jack lowered his head and whispered in her ear:
“Are you alright? Do you want to leave?”
Violet slightly shook her head in denial, still deciding what she wanted to do.
She didn’t feel like leaving, but she also didn’t want to see the man being killed in front of her.
Mr. Brown was clearly afraid and couldn’t give the information they wanted.
Violet knew he should pay for his betrayal, but killing was too much. Why didn’t Gwen tell them to put him in jail?
What was she trying to prove?
“Are you sure, Vi? It can get pretty ugly.” Jack insisted, but she stood by her decision.
Gwen nodded to one of the guards, and the man came up on stage with a gun in his hand.
The screams were deafening. Everyone was very amused by the fact that a man was going to be killed.
Violet couldn’t think.
Her heart was racing, her legs were trembling and she felt like at any time she would throw up.
When she saw the guard raising his arm and pointing the gun to Mr. Brown’s head, she instantly hid her face behind Jack’s shoulder and closed her eyes strongly.
She couldn’t stand it.
She regretted not leaving when he offered.
She couldn’t watch that scene.
And then there was a loud bang, and a hollow thud that Violet assumed it was from his body falling on the wooden floor of the stage.
The cheers got even louder, and she still couldn’t look.
Jack passed his arm around her and pulled her for a hug, while Violet still had her eyes closed.
“I hope this served as an example of what will happen when the next fugitives are caught and don’t agree to cooperate with us. The Diamond Pack won’t admit any more of this to happen.” Gwen’s voice came to her ears, and Violet had to lift her head to look.
She struggled not to glance at the body on the floor, and fixated her eyes on Gwen’s face.
And she was horrified with what she was seeing.
Gwen wasn’t herself anymore.
She didn’t seem shaken, regretful or any of it.
“We will make sure to show the entire Crescent that we won’t tolerate betrayals here. We are a family, and we must stay together and fight all corruption. As the new Alpha, I’ll do everything in my power to assure that.” Gwen continued.
“So she did have a change of heart.” Jack whispered by her side. “I must confess that I didn’t think it would be so soon, but guess I was wrong.”
So was Violet.
She didn’t think Gwen could be corrupted by power.
She didn’t think that sweet and cute girl could ever turn into a cold heartless woman just like that.
“What did I do?” Violet moaned.
A commotion was happening around her, but she couldn’t understand what it was.
She was too shocked and feeling sick, but apparently the trial was over.
She saw Gwen coming down of the stage and taking the same path she came through when she arrived.
The guards were all around her and lots of people were cheering her.
Violet couldn’t feel her body, and the only thing she remembered happening after that was Jack dragging her to the car and driving far away from what she considered her home for so long.
“Get back to the mansion. I’ll go out with Violet, will be back later.” Violet heard he whisper to someone before he started the car and left.
The wind on her face helped her sickness to get a bit better, but she was still pretty shattered.
She couldn’t stop blaming herself for what Gwen had become.
“Vi, it wasn’t your fault.” Jack said in a low voice trying to comfort her.
But she was tired of hearing that.
She knew it was her fault, and no one could tell her otherwise.
“Of course it was!” she yelled back at him, and he looked a little surprised by the way she reacted. “You didn’t know Gwen, alright? She was the sweetest person I’ve ever known. If none of this had happened, she would still be the person I knew. You don’t get it…” she said already crying.
Jack pulled the car over and hugged her.
The tears came out even harder after that.
She hated to vent her anger and frustration on him. And apparently she was doing that a lot lately, when everything that Jack was doing in return was trying to help her and comfort her.
Violet never felt so unfair in her life.
“I’m sorry…” she murmured against his chest.
“It’s okay.” he replied.
“No, I didn’t mean to yell at you. I…” she said between sobs. “I shouldn’t have yelled at you.”
“It’s okay, Vi. You’re upset. It’s just a normal reaction, really, don’t beat yourself up.” Jack continued to say while he caressed her hair gently.
“How did things turn out like this? How can things change so much in such a little time?” she complained, while he wiped her tears from her cheeks.
“Don’t overthink it, baby. Life is not always easy to cope with. You are not responsible for what she had become. Maybe you just never saw that she had this bad side inside of her, waiting to be awaken. This happens more than you can imagine. Everyone has their own beasts to deal with.”
She stared at him, surprised by how his words actually made sense, even thought the feeling of guilty was still eating her up inside.
“But maybe she would never had awaken hers if it wasn’t for me.”
“Maybe. But maybe she would find out about it eventually. We can never know. But you need to stop putting everything on your account. You’re not the bad person here, Violet.”
“I know… I know.” she said contemplating the view outside of the window. “You don’t think this will be over soon, do you?” she asked with a tiny strand of hope hanging on her heart.
Jack looked at her with pitiful eyes, but she already knew the answer for that question.
“I don’t, Vi. I think this is just the beginning.”
