The Alpha’s Prisoner - Chapter 73
Violet considered waking Jack, but he seemed to be in such a deep sleep, that she didn’t want to disturb him.
He should be really exhausted, and she could wait to know what happened.
Her entire body was sore and she noticed a bandage around her ribs, and she soon remembered being kicked several times there. It also hurt when she breathed.
She lost track of how many ribs she had broken in these surprising attacks. Good thing her wolf self healed her fast.
After a few minutes, a nurse came to offer her something to eat, and Jack awakened with the movement.
“Oh, God, you woke up!” he got up and pulled her in a tight hug.
“Ouch… Jack, my ribs!” Violet complained while still hugging him..
“I’m sorry… I really thought I was going to lose you this time.” he said with sad eyes.
“I’m not that easy to get rid of. What happened anyway?” she wanted to know. “How long have I been sleeping?”
“Three days.”
Violet widened her eyes in shock.
Then she noticed how exhausted and pale Jack looked.
“What?” she murmured to herself.
“I sensed something was wrong when you took so long to come back with him.” Jack spilled the last word, and Violet noticed he didn’t want to pronounce Lance’s name.
“Then I decided to go after you.” Jack continued. “I could feel deep down that something wasn’t right. And when I finally found you, you were being attacked by two men I’ve never seen in my life.”
“So Lance wasn’t there?” she asked feeling a bit more cheerful.
But Jack looked at her with narrowed eyes.
“No, he wasn’t. But we don’t need to go much further to understand that he was the one behind all of it, do we?”
Violet wasn’t convinced yet, but she decided it was best for them if she kept her mouth shut for a change.
Jack was clearly distressed, and if she said anything in Lance’s favor, it would only lead them to more arguments.
So she stayed quiet and let him continue the story.
“You were not fighting back, and I realized you were already fainted. That made me so angry that I couldn’t think rationally.”
Violet gulped.
“What did you do?”
Jack looked away before he answered.
“I killed them.” he said in a whisper.
“Jack!” she scolded him, even though she understood his motives.
“What did you want me to do, Vi? Watch them kill you?” he asked outraged.
“Did you really have to kill them though?” she asked, trying not to sound judgmental.
“I wasn’t thinking clearly, alright? I just wanted to take you out of there. I didn’t even know if you were still alive or not. I just let my animal side take control. It was instinct, okay? Can you please not judge me for that? I’m already trying not to go after that man and kill him myself.” Jack said with his teeth clenched.
“Don’t you think he could also be ambushed like me? He wasn’t there, maybe they took him as well…” she suggested, but Jack got up immediately.
“I’m not gonna talk to you about this, Violet. I swear that if that man appears in front of me, I won’t answer for my actions. I don’t care if he’s your brother or not.”
Jack didn’t let her reply, he simply turned his back and walked outside the ward.
Violet felt like crying, but tried her hardest not to.
She also thought that Lance set a trap for her, but she still didn’t believe deep down that it was really what happened.
But how could she find out the truth?
She couldn’t even suggest the idea of going after him again. From what she saw, Jack was capable of locking her inside the mansion so she wouldn’t leave and risk her life.
He was blind with fury, and she wouldn’t push him harder for now.
But something wasn’t adding up, that she was certain.
Later that day, Violet received a very surprising visit.
Morgana came bringing some candies and books, which she thanked a lot.
It was nice to have something to distract her mind for a few hours.
Her relationship with Morgana had improved a lot, although it wasn’t like they had a friendship like Violet and Lucinda, for example.
But that night, Violet was surprised by the type of conversation both of them had.
“You know that Jack confides some of his frustrations to me, right? As a friend, I mean…” Morgana started while grabbing one of the chocolates she had given to Violet.
Violet nodded as she opened a can of sour candies.
She knew Morgana and Jack were friends, and it took her a while to understand at the beginning that she didn’t have to be jealous of Morgana.
“I know you’ve been going through a lot lately, I told him that. And he knows. But it’s really hard for him to accept the relationship you have with your family. Or what’s left of it, anyway.” Morgana continued.
Violet was paying close attention to her, still trying to figure out what was Morgana’s intention with that talk.
“He was a mess after he came back with you on his arms, barely alive. For three days, he didn’t leave your side. He’s doing the best he can to make you happy, Violet. But it’s really hard for him too.”
Violet blinked a few times to scare away the tears.
“I know it is. But I’m just doing what I think is right. Can you blame me for that?”
“No, of course not. He doesn’t blame you either. He knows how hard it must be for you. That’s why is hard for him too. He’s putting aside some things that he believes in to make you happy.”
“It’s hard to understand that when he tries to control me every time.” Violet complained. “I don’t need people telling me what to do anymore. He knows what I’ve been through. He should be the first to support me.”
Morgana smiled and leaned against the chair.
“Jack can be really overprotective sometimes. He doesn’t like not being in control. Maybe that’s an Alpha thing, who knows? All I’m saying is to be a little more patient with him, okay? I’m sure he’ll come around and be more supportive. Maybe just try a different approach.”
“What do you mean?” Violet asked.
“Instead of arguing with him every time he says ‘no’ to you, try to show him how you think, how you see things…” Morgana explained.
“But I do that. Until he pisses me off and I can’t stand it.” Violet answered rolling her eyes.
“Anyway, it’s no use now to stand up for Lance. Even if you do have a point. Let’s wait until we hear from him again, or maybe find out what really happened. If he was the one who ordered your attack, we’ll hear from him soon.”
“Do you think he did it?” Violet wanted to know.
Morgana took a deep breath.
“Honestly, I don’t. But we need to wait a little more. In the meantime, we’re trying to find out who is Arden’s spy. Maybe he could have something to do with it.”
Violet opened her mouth in shock.
“Yes, Jack told me about his letter.” Morgana said with a smile. “And we’re working on it.”
